Setting: Training fields, it's quiet, except for the sounds of leather and metal hitting wood as someone trains in the early hours before dawn. The Training Grounds are normally empty at this time, which is why Amarantha comes here to train during the early hours.

Revenge is an act of passion; vengeance of justice. Injuries are revenged; crimes are avenged.

Amarantha was hard at work, training with her whip and sword, working on perfecting her ability to dual wield her two preferred weapons. It was super early in the morning, somewhere around three or four in the morning, and mist was still on the ground from the heat of the ground meeting the cool air. Amarantha took a deep breath as she sheathed her sword for a moment and wiped the sweat from her brow. She was in full training gear, not the usual metal armor, but she was wearing leather training gear, her long white hair was pulled back into a braided ponytail to keep it out of her face, and it was then coiled around her head to prevent anyone from being able to use it against her in a fight. The shy girl noticed that the sun was rising, so she had to have been out here longer than she thought.

"Well, well, well, look what we have here boys? A little Roman out by herself!"

"Where are your bodyguards? Hmm?"

Amarantha tensed as she turned on her heel, barefoot since she didn't like shoes, and narrowed her pale eyes on the intruders. They were dressed head to toe in battle gear, and were wearing the colors of the Ares cabin. So, the typical meatheads then. Amarantha turned her back on them, showing them that they meant nothing to her, but she kept her senses open so that they couldn't surprise her.

"You're going to ignore us? You little-"

"We'll teach you not to ignore Children of Ares!"

Amarantha made a face, but turned on her heel once more as one of the guys lunged at her. She might have been smaller than them, by a lot, but she was faster; and more nimble. She used her training, and her position, to use his own momentum against him and threw him over her hip. The second Son of Ares shouted out a war cry and rushed at Amarantha. Amarantha spun on her heel, in a move reminiscent of something out of ballet, and slammed one knee into his solar plexus, then double stepped back to give herself some room. She unraveled her whip and lashed out with it, catching his ankles and yanked; sending him to the ground to eat dirt. While she was dealing with the second, the first had gotten back to his feet and was coming at her once again. He had a sword drawn, so Amarantha drew her own and parried his blow, then redirected it to the side of her. She then flicked her wrist to unravel her whip from the other's ankles and lashed it out at the first. Her whip hit his hand with enough force to force him to drop the blade. Amarantha used her whip to grab the hilt of the sword and bring it to her, so that he was now unarmed. Honestly, this was the best the boys of Ares Cabin could do? No wonder Clarisse was supposedly their best, at least she wasn't useless like these two.

Amarantha glared at them, her pale eyes seeming to glow in with the light of the rising sun at her back. She wouldn't speak, no one but Candour had ever heard her voice, but she could still get a point across, and right now it was obvious she was less than happy with the two idiots at her feet.

"We'll make you pay for this, you better watch your back, little Mute. We won't forget this!"

"Yeah! Wait till we tell Mavis about this! She'll make you pay!"

What a way to wake up, for once Jack was getting Mavis out of bed. The sun was just beginning to rise as the worried giant of a boy stepped back to give Mavis room. Ordinarily a worried Ares Cabin member meant an unwinnable attack, but Jack was a bit different than his brothers, aside from the fact he was almost a foot taller. Jack actually cared about inter-cabin and inter-camp relations, he always tried to keep his brothers from "throwing the first punch", and because of that Mavis trusted the big lug. Unfortunately it made for freak out about everything, thus this early wake up. "What's your malfunction today," Mavis asked through a yawn.

"Well I was out with Steve and Buck about to get so training inbwhen they noticed a wolf by herself, and decided to go mess with her. I know it might be nothing but if Candour finds out those two were messing with his girlfriend it could lead to worse relations between the 4th and Ares Cabin."

Now it made sense, Steve and Bucky were a couple of classic frat boy style Ares guys, big on biceps small on brains and in their case fighting ability. Sliding out of bed Mavis found pants already set out for her, sometimes Jack almost acted like a butler. Getting dressed quickly, the counselor made her way to the training grounds just in time to see those two get what they deserved. Almost immediately after the boys started whining about the mute beating them the duo felt the sting of Mavis' backhand. "Drag your sorry a** back to the cabin, your both on cleaning duty for a month. Scrambling to their feet Steve and Buck ran back to the cabin, less they get worse. Turning towards the other girl, " not bad white. Your not like those other howler monkeys in Candour's group. You walk the walk but don't need to talk the talk. "

Amarantha looked at the young woman who had delivered punishment to the two Aries boys and tilted her head slightly as she observed her. Amarantha then gave her a hesitant, but polite, smile and slight bow. She honestly didn't know how to talk to anyone other than Candour, but that was something of a double edged sword anyway. Amarantha sheathed her sword, then coiled her whip and put it on her hip, where it belonged. She then made a few signs with her hands, testing to see if Mavis understood ASL, or if she was one of the many that didn't, if not, she'd have to resort to either charades or writing on the ground.

'Who needs words when actions speak louder?'

Amarantha had nothing against the Greeks, her mother was considered both Greek and Roman, and as such had no qualms with the average Camp Half-Blood member. She really only had problems with the arrogant or stupid ones; and may the Gods have mercy on those who were both for there were few who could incite Amarantha's full fury like the arrogantly stupid. Amarantha rather enjoyed 'talking' to the children of Athena, even sometimes played chess and other such games with the younger ones. So 'talking' to Mavis was no hardship for her, if Mavis could understand her.

The truth was, she respected Mavis, it was hard not to, when practically everyone knew that she kept the other Children of Ares in line single-handedly. Amarantha just didn't see the point of words, words were easy to fabricate, it was easy for others to lie, or stretch the truth to suit themselves. Plus, Amarantha was cripplingly shy, and had self confidence that ranked in the negatives at all times. She had an even lower value of self worth, so talking was out of the question for this self-imposed little mute.

As Amarantha began to sign, a strange distant look would pass over Mavis. She recognized the movements and understood, but seeing them brought up memories of her teacher, memories of James. He'd been teaching her before the war because a brother of his blew out his hearing so all Hephaestus Cabin learned to make him feel better. Mavis could understand but not sign herself, James had never gotten around to teaching her that before he passed on. Fortunately Mavis remembered she wasn't alone and was able to push the memories away before they showed weakness in front of a wolf; true Amarantha did not seem untrustworthy her ties to Candour made the daughter of Ares cautious about revealing anything. Returning to her previous calm demeanor Mavis responded to the signed comment. "True but sometimes words are needed for sensitive matters, I know a child of Ares saying that must be like seeing a dog bounce on the tip of its tail like a pogo stick. " Mavis laughed a little at her own comment before continuing. "That said I'm a girl of action, so I get what you mean. Oh given you don't talk I don't actually know your name, I'm Mavis the lead howler monkey's older Greek sister." While she didn't like calling herself Candour's relation but she'd bite back her pride since this was one of his underlings.

As the two "spoke" Mavis noticed the sun was getting higher, soon more people would be out and about. She hoped the mute girl wouldn't mind, she seemed a little hesitant already in her actions more people could be bad. "You want to go for a walk before company comes, I'd rather to bang in all my idiot brother's heads for being stupid. " Mavis said with a smirk as she looked over towards the forest. "And don't worry I don't bite, unless given a strong reason to do so."

Amarantha looked Mavis over, a new note of further respect in her pale eyes. At her comment about words being best for sensitive matters she nodded in agreement, that's why she didn't participate in those types of situation by herself. She was more the one brought along to listen in silently, since she tended to catch things most people didn't. She smirked slightly when Mavis called Candour a howler monkey, she couldn't blame the other girl, really, Candour could be very loud, but that was only what others saw of him. She knew of his secret sensitive, though it was rare and he saw it as a weakness, side. She waved a hand, then signed to Mavis, though she had noticed the brief moment of hesitance, and sorrow buried in the other's past, pass across Mavis' face a moment ago.

'True, but that's why I'm only brought along as the silent observer in those situations. And a walk sounds perfect, actually. Thank you, by the way, for putting them in their place, I was only looking for some peace earlier, to try and improve my skills. My name is Amarantha, by the way. You can call me Ama, most do, if they're not calling me Mute.'

Amarantha made sure that she didn't sign to fast, most people who knew ASL couldn't keep up with how fast her hands flew sometimes, and she didn't want to seem rude to someone she actually respected. She gathered her small pack of gear, mostly an iPod, a couple towels to wipe of sweat, and a water bottle, and placed it over one shoulder, then checked to make sure her weapons were properly secured before she looked back at Mavis.

'Shall we?'

One of the things she enjoyed, besides music or swimming, was a nice walk. She loved nature, and found a lot of inspiration for her artwork in the natural beauty around the camp. She had an entire sketchbook full of landscape pictures, as well as drawings of some of the other campers doing everyday things, like training or walking around, lazing and doing nothing. She never let anyone see the sketches though, she never thought they were good enough, especially since she was no child of Apollo or any other God or Goddess known for art of any kind.
