Basic Information
Based on the .280 British, the 7mm cartridge was designed to augment or replace the .30-06 and other large rifles cartridges by compensating with extremely high ballistic coefficients. While weaker at close ranges, the round was designed to match the ballistics at longer ranges with roughly the same energy, and posses superior penetration due to the smaller bullet. The round is essentially this same cartridge but modernized with superior gunpowder, a modern bullet, and designed to be caseless, which significantly reduces the weight. The cartridge's weight is a total of 11.6 grams, 9.1 grams for the bullet and 2.5 grams for the gun powder and the binder. The 7mm cartridge is also considered sufficiently powerful at close range with the 9.1 gram cartridge traveling at 780 m/s, producing 2,768 joules of energy. By comparison the cartridge has 53% more energy than the 5.56mm, and 38% more than the Ak-47. It is also 2.275 times heavier than the 5.56mm, and 1.13 times heavier than the Ak-47. At close range, the round has far superior barrier penetration and stopping power than either of the rounds, making it an extremely powerful intermediate cartridge.
