The wind carried a chill with it- the chill of winter, to be sure. It didn't get particularly cold, but a chill rain was more than enough to make her miserable. Enfys gave a snort and looked to the sky. The afternoon was graying over. It would likely rain all night, if her ability to read the weather was worth any amount of salt. A night of cold rain ahead, to be sure.

"We should be heading back," she said, turning her head to look at her companion. "The sun is nearly at the horizon and the night is bringing rain. I would like to be home before dark."

Caron tilted his head so that he could better look at the mare out of right eye, even as he pulled at the last of the green leaves clinging to the shrubbery at his hooves. He quite pointedly flicked his tail and began to chew.

There was still light- they had ages before dark. And while it might rain, they'd be inside and warm soon enough. He had very little intention of hurrying himself along just because she was afraid to get wet.

With a sigh he closed his eyes and tugged at more grass.

Enfys flicked her own tail in annoyance. The big oaf. Far more concerned with having his belly full than his hide warm; she should have known.

"You are more than welcome to stay out here in the cold," she turned and began to move away. "Honestly. All you do is eat."

He made a noise that was somewhere between denial and acknowledgment, and centered squarely on "see you later".

The large unicorn was more than content to stay right there and chomp away at the delicious tidbits autumn had to offer him, rain and night be damned.

Enfys had to admit to herself that she hadn't known what to expect. Or well, she likely should have expected him to stay.

She also knew it was something she should not be dwelling on, especially considering just how often things like this happened.

With a small laugh aimed at herself, Enfys quickened her pace into a little trot, fully intending to make it home before the rain set in. It was also nice to be home before dark - the humans would sometimes worry about them if they were too late, though they tried not to show it.

It had always been interesting to Enfys just how many emotions carried across the barriers of species and language. Of course she knew what her human was feeling, but she'd learned to pick up on the cues from Caron's as well, and the rest of the families. Anger and frustration and sadness were easy enough to see even when the humans tried to hide them. Joy and happiness were rarely ever hidden though. It always warmed her heart to see the humans happy.

Her quick little trot carried her through the twilight, along the well-worn path as is carried her up to the crest of the hill and back down the other side. From here she could see the smoke from the village on the other side of the next hill, as well as the handful of small buildings that made up the living quarters for her family. Well. One building was the living quarters, the rest were small sheds for this and that.

The mare gave a little whinny as she passed the sheep pen - the few animals there baaaa'd in return - and turned then she turned to--

"Enfys!" The voice was a happy one, a young one, and a human one.

Enfys stopped as the little human ran towards her. A happy little girl, the younger sister of her own human. The girl was going on about something, her child's voice almost music-like as Enfys nudged her and reached for her pocket. This little girl often had some sort of sweet tucked away for her. The child laughed at the nudge and pulled out a bit of fruit, gleefully giving it over to the mare.

Enfys chomped it up happily; this was why she chose to stay with her human and her family. Happy people and free snacks. It was, all in all, a happy and easy life.

Caron, for his part, knew they had it easy. He had also found himself not caring as much, lately. His human - the elder brother of the girl Enfys was bonded to - was courting some girl in the village, and while Caron was happy for him, he really felt like he was intruding half of the time. Growing up, his human was. Growing up and going to start a family of his own.

Caron tried to imagine what that would be like as he chewed. Tiny humans were amusing and rather adorable, but they were so good at being underfoot. At least the ones he lived with. He'd heard that in cities where there were less animals that humans would stay away more... his human's family just grew up with animals around.

His human's future children would do the same. Caron would be around, and they'd all be on the farm together, small as it was. Someone had to continue with the raising of the sheep and goats, after all.

He was still there, nibbling at the grass and contemplating his pleasant future when the first large drops of rain began to all. Enfys had been right. Rain. Cold, heavy rain.

With something of a great big sigh Caron began his walk back to the farm. He could hurry, run even, but he was going to be soaked through by the time he got home and he knew it. It was pouring - what had started as a few drops had simply turned to a deluge. Whatever the Gods were doing it was something big.

Night came with the rain, darkness settling in among the sound of it all. The hiss and patter of it. A sound Caron found soothing, even in the cold dark nights at the end of autumn. As he crested the small hill and found the farm below him, he could see little flickers of light in the windows- little lamps of oil lit to give the humans something to see by before bed. It warmed his heart to see that - home, and the fires burning there.

Another flicker of light caught his attention, and Caron stopped on the now muddy path. What was that?

The flicker was indeed the last, dying flame from a lantern. If he'd known the unicorn was there, Pyrrhos would have stayed in the woods. Unfortunately, he'd assumed the stallion had been in the barn - and well, assumptions were easily wrong.

As it was, Pyrrhos stood out in the open, in the pouring rain and the darkness, watching the little farm. He'd arrived just before sundown, just in time to seen Enfys return home and nuzzle a small human. He'd done his very best to stay hidden. The woods near the farm were sparse and low, but they'd been enough to conceal him.

At least until he heard the sound of hoof on stone over the hiss of the rain. He jumped in surprise, his wet wings fluttering.

"Pyrrhos." It was Caron's voice, and the pegasus could now see the dark shape of a large horse moving towards him.

"Caron," he replied. There was no malice in his tone, but there was no joy, either. He forced himself to sound guarded.

"You've come back."

It was a statement of the facts as he saw them. Pyrrhos was here, standing right there. He'd obviously come back.

Though he seemed uneasy about it. The way he stood, the way he held his wings. The way he'd been watching the house... Caron was glad he'd snuck up on pegasus. If he'd known it was Pyrrhos from the beginning he might not have, but since he'd not realized who it was he'd come around from the back. Which ultimately left Pyrrhos with little room for retreat.

In the darkness and the rain, Caron waited to see what his old friend would do.
