THE MAGE'S APPRENTICE
(The Caffeinated Infidiel/Little Kitty Ricky)

CHARACTERS

Castor Dagenhart :: The Caffeinated Infidel

Name: Castor Dagenhart

Age: 31

Gender: Male

Class: Magi

Duties: Sworn brother-in-arms to the king; guardian and educator of the prince.

Abilities: While not a Grand Master among the Magi, Castor is capable of both modest and advanced spell-casting with potions and ancient language; he is also well-experienced in the art of magical dueling with the use of a slender wand fashioned of rosewood and carved with various talismans. He is moderately well-versed in the use of swords and other traditional blades, although steel is far from his weapon of choice.

Personality: Castor is a solemn and responsible man who does his best to look after the orphaned prince, one of the few members of the royal family left alive. Being highly intelligent, Castor has long since had an ambition to teach and educate. He is resourceful and quick-thinking; as such, he sometimes has trouble communicating a complete idea in words and so has developed a habit of keeping many of his thoughts to himself. Being a quiet man, he enjoys communing with nature, savoring the shifts in weather and being alone. His paternal instinct is in a constant waging war with his desire for cleanliness, order and balance, but he does his best to be a patient and understanding caretaker.

Past: Castor was born and raised as a member of the Magi, a class of sorcerers, warlocks, scientists and inventors. He was raised with high expectations and low tolerance for immaturity, so his time spent in childhood was one of vigorous study and very little play.

He met the prince’s father when he was a boy growing up in the royal city. The two became fast friends, both of them normal young men trapped in a matrix of high expectations. During one of their usual adventures through the city, Castor and the prince’s to-be-father swore an oath to fight for each other, to come to the other's aid, and to never forsake the other, and so became brothers-in-arms.

As they grew older, responsibilities kept them busy and their excursions together became less and less frequent. After the king was crowned, he summoned Castor to the royal city and the two were reunited, the oath renewed in an official sense. Not long after the young prince was born, an uprising of the working and lower classes tore through the castle, attacking anyone who stood in their path. Angered by the unfair system and the oblivious monarchy, they conducted a brutal cleansing that led to the death of nearly all the royal family. Castor managed to escape with the infant prince in his arms and fled the country, choosing to raise the prince in anonymity outside their nation’s borders.

Appearance: Castor is tall, thin, and light-skinned with gray eyes and long, pale brown hair that he often contains with a braid or a basic strip of ribbon or plain leather. While his day-to-day garb consists of humble robes, tunics and trousers occasionally embroidered with magic sigils and dyed with berries and other plant materials, he has kept a set of attire from his days at home among the Magi in the royal city; this set is of ornate white-and-gold silk with leather and bone accessories, fashioned by equal parts magic and artistry.

Prince Edin Arundell :: Little Kitty Ricky
Name: Edin Arundell (takes Castor's last name as an alias and as Castor is the current guardian)

Age: 9

Gender: Male

Class: Student in magic.

Duties: Heir to the throne, student of Castor.

Abbilities: Edin is still very young, but holds incredible promise compared to other such sheltered peers. Perhaps from living under Castor, he takes naturally to magic, and is most interested in alchemy and potions and enchantments.

Personality: Edin is quite cheerful, having grown a sheltered and peaceful life. He doesn't know anything outside the small town and the woods around his home with Castor, but his limited view of the world shows and restricts him. He is empathetic and kind, and loves to help people and talk to people he comes across in town, but despite this he is self conscious in nature, shying away from people he deems intimidating or who may not like him. Not being sure how to process that situation. He has trouble voicing conflicting and troubling emotions, and tries to soothe over them and be cheerful, which can lead to stumping him in whatever internal problems he may have.

His aspiration is to one day heal people with his potions and magic, and take a student of his own.

Past:

The only past Edin knows is that of his life with Castor, his mentor. His entire life has been the forest around them, and studying with Castor in silence. He remembers making friends with animals as a small child, in the begining charming himself to allow them to feel at ease by him. Its not been very long since then, perhaps two years.

His life so far has been short, and peaceful.

But he doesn't know of the darker past behind him. About how lower classes infiltrated his home at killed nearly all the royal family, about the older brother he once had when he was too small to remember.

He was taken and saved by Castor, and has since lost any memory of that night. Though there are times he has nightmares where he's looking up at a dark ceiling, and hearing crashing and crying. He rarely remembers this though, when he awakes.

Aside this, Castor told him that he found him while out in the forest. Perhaps he was left there, but whatever family he had were clearly unfit, so Edin never really worried about them. Castor was all the family he needed.

Appearance: Edin has wavy hair, coming down his neck. Its a pale brown, with the slightest tint of a blonde green. Mostly he wears good clothes for digging around for plants and maneuvering in the woods. He has nice white robes, given to him by Castor, but very rarely wears them for anything aside studying inside, occasionally on a trip to the nearby town.

His eyes are a light green, with specs of brown and darker greens. Mimicking the forest in which he grew. His skin is pale, but he nearly always has a light tan. He has an emerald necklace given to him by Castor, which he wears under his shirt most days. He's not aware it is a jewel belonging to his dead mother, given by his father. He holds it precious simply because it was given by his mentor.

-

I couldn't find an image suiting of his appearance, and this is the closest I got. Scale down the age and add some green tints to the hair and it fits really well. Sorry ahhh. I'll have to draw him sometime!

XXThe day was turning out to be beautiful, like most others in the small, idyllic village Castor Dagenhart and his apprentice had come to call home. It was summer, but not a tempestuous, blistering summer; the weather was still close enough to springtime for the sun to not be shining too brightly and the gravel path through the garden rows to be cool under the mage's feet every morning.

XXTaking a sip of tea brewed from his own collection of dried leaves, herbs, and fruits, Castor knelt and took a seat on the small, wooden porch of their cottage, cross-legged on the floor. There weren't many chairs in this house; as he had explained to Edin once, it was important that a mage experience closeness with nature and practice humbling oneself. Besides, sitting on the floor was good for one's health, and I know you're not fond of okra, but would you please stop picking at your dinner and just eat it?

XXBirds chirped in the trees overhead and bugs buzzed and hummed through the garden leaves and stalks. A warding spell kept the bad ones away, but every now and then Castor would let a few in just to avoid irritating the other villagers with his good luck. The trickle of river water brought down from the main stream by a simple irrigation system added to the ambiance, making the front garden a soothing orchestra of simple, natural sounds.

XXHe wasn't sure when Edin would wake up. The sun had been rising for some time, though, so he anticipated the boy getting out of bed sometime within the next hour.

Edin awoke with the morning sun on his eyelids, feeling the warmth and seeing it through the skin. He turned in bed, grumbling slightly. His bed was next to a window, and on the ledge he had placed various objects he'd come to like.

Mainly things found in the forest and on the outskirts of town. Like old money, acorns, and pretty rocks. There was also an old wooden spin-top given to him by some kids in town. He hadn't seen them much, but he still considered it precious.

There were also some especially pretty potion bottles there. He should use them for something, but they were so pretty he wanted to save them for something special only. And he didn't consider his skill worth of that standard yet.

Finally he turned up ward again, rubbing his eyes and feeling the sun. He opened them and gazed out the window, not getting up quite yet. He noticed Castor was absent, but early in the morning that was nothing new. He decided it would be best to get up early and try to match him.

He sat up, stretching, groaning, and shuffled out of bed. He had read late into the night, without realizing. It was fiction too, so he scolded himself inwardly for getting so caught up in something fake.

The wooden floors felt nice beneath his bare feet. He decided he'd start by making tea.
