Ghoul and Ghost Studies I

Afterlife [ ]
Immortality [ ]
Resurrection [ ]
Creation of Ghost [ ]

Lesson One

Thorsten walked into his class for his next batch of third years. This mornings class was certainly going to be different than the other. Why… because all of these students would be taking the class for the very first time. So there was no need to ask what they remembered from the previous year. Instead Thorsten would be able to jump right in and go over the rules and the subject at hand. He curiously wondered who all would take the class, hopefully quite a few.

Sitting at his desk as his students arrived, Thorsten hardly showed any expression as he looked to see theirs. He wondered how many of them questioned the stuffed corpses. Getting up and going to the front of his desk he leaned up against it before flicking his wand to the board revealing the rules and the subject topic on the board. “Good morning and welcome to ghoul and ghost studies.” Thorsten greeted before continuing his introduction. “I am Professor Eckstein. For the next three years, perhaps five you will follow these five rules. Be on time, prepared and ready. Pay attention, no wands, and be involved.” He informed them.

“Now, I would like names and houses from each of you. As for me I attended Durmstrang and am former Keltainen. That would be a mix of Hufflepuff and Ravenclaw here I believe.” Thorsten asked of them before adding. “I would also like your thoughts on the day’s topic, which is the afterlife.”

Listening to the class’s opinion on the afterlife they certainly had interesting opinions. He could remember his thoughts on it back then. Of course back then he hadn’t realized how much death hit home for him. Pushing the thought aside, Thorsten had a class to teach. ??? Standing up from his leaning option at the front of his desk, the German wizard flicked his wand at the board once more. The board wiping clean and a piece of chalk started writing the notes for the lesson. “I suggest taking notes down from the board.” He gestured before continuing on.

“As we are aware those who pass on - that are witches or wizards - have the option of staying here as ghosts or going on. Now, we shall discuss the former later on this year. For now we are solely focusing on the beyond.” Thorsten told them as he walked around the room. “So, where do our souls go when we take our last breath and what does the beyond look like? The truth is up for debate as the nature of what lies beyond is still very much a mystery.” He explained. “There are many theories among people such as reincarnation, heaven or hell, things of that nature. What we do know however, is that there is a plane that runs parallel with the hereafter known as ‘limbo’. It is said to be a place where one goes to make their decision on whether they stay or go before truly passing on.” He finished as he made his way back to the front of the classroom.

“Now if you have any questions, feel free to ask.” Thorsten told them as he looked up at the clock. “If not then you are dismissed.”

Lesson Two

Thorsten had a good bunch of kids in his class. At least that’s what he believed. They had interesting ideas and they seemed interested in the subject. Of course that’s why they took the elective. Sitting at his desk as his students arrived, he hardly showed any expression as they took their seats. Getting up and going to the front of his desk, he leaned up against it before flicking his wand to the board revealing the subject topic on the board. “Good morning,” Thorsten greeted before getting into the topic. “Today we will be discussing the topic of immortality.” He informed them before the board wiped clean and a piece of chalk started writing the notes for the lesson.

“Immortality or eternal life is simply you will never die you most of know. There are few ways to become immortal. In fact true immortality is nearly impossible and has always been a known limit for magic.” Thorsten told them as he walked around the room. “The only creature to possess natural immortality is the phoenix, from which is reborn from their ashes upon death. Vampires are close to immortality, as they never age. However even they can be killed." He said before adding. "As for us there are few ways to sustain one’s life, namely the Philosopher’s Stone created by Nicolas Flamel and Herpo the Foul’s creation of the Horcrux.”

“The Philosopher’s Stone many of you know produces the Elixir of Life. Despite extending the drinkers life, it cannot make them immortal. Unicorn blood similar to Elixir of Life, as it extends life but cannot make the drinker immortal. It’s said to curse the drinker with half-life for the slaughter of innocent creature.” Thorsten continued as he continued back up to the front of the room. “Now Horcruxes on the other hand, is the dark art of splitting one’s soul by committing murder. The act violates the very laws of nature.” He explained. “Though it by far the closest way to become immortal. I wouldn’t advice figuring out how.” He added giving them a narrow look of warning. “Any questions?”

Lesson Three

Thorsten sat at his desk as his students arrived. He hardly showed any expression as they took their seats. Getting up and going to the front of his desk, he leaned up against it before flicking his wand to the board revealing the subject topic on the board. “Good morning,” Thorsten greeted before getting into the topic. “Today we will be discussing resurrection.” He informed them before the board wiped clean and a piece of chalk started writing the notes for the lesson.

“The closest anyone has gotten to resurrect a person from the dead is with the resurrection stone.” Thorsten told them as he walked around the room. “It can recall someone who died from beyond, but they will return only in a semi-corporeal form." He mentioned before continuing back up to the front of the room. "These forms of loved ones are less real than a living body but more than a ghost. Meaning, they are more physically solid than a ghost, but less than a living body.” He finished before asking. “Now, any questions?”

Lesson Four

Thorsten sat at his desk as his students arrived. He hardly showed any expression as they took their seats. Getting up and going to the front of his desk, he leaned up against it before flicking his wand to the board revealing the subject topic on the board. “Good morning,” Thorsten greeted before getting into the topic. “Today we will be discussing the creation of ghosts.” He informed them before the board wiped clean and a piece of chalk started writing the notes for the lesson.

“As mentioned at the beginning of the year, witches or wizards have the option to stay here as ghosts.” Thorsten told them as he walked around the room. “When we pass, those who fear death or wish not to move on may stay behind. They are as they were only transparent. The process sudden, most do not choose the path. As once decided no ghost may go beyond the vial. Those who do usually are found near the place they died." He mentioned before continuing back up to the front of the room. "Though, some may not have the option depending on the condition of one’s soul.” He finished before asking. “Now, any questions?”

Ghoul and Ghost Studies II

Traits [ ]
Abilities [ ]
Meeting a Ghost [ ]
Poltergeist vs Ghost [ ]

Lesson One

It was his third class of the new year and Thorsten was looking forward to it. Last year had gone well and he had a good bunch of students. He hoped that this year would go just as well and hopefully his students would remember the information from last year. Of course if they didn't he'd be making them do review, luckily without the whole introduction thing to go along with it.

Sitting at his desk as his students arrived, Thorsten hardly showed any expression as he looked to see theirs. Getting up and going to the front of his desk he leaned up against it before flicking his wand to the board revealing the rules and the subject topic on the board. “Good afternoon and welcome back to ghoul and ghost studies. I hope your summers were good.” Thorsten greeted them before getting into what they'd be doing for the day.

“Today we will cover new material but first, I'd like to do review of last years material.” Thorsten told them before adding. “One topic each please.”

Listening to his students it looked like they paying attention the previous year. At least Thorsten didn’t have to worry too much about that. Of course it would be more of a worry come next year’s testing. “Nice to see you paid attention and remember, 10 points to each of you.” He said before going on to what the lesson would be. “For the rest of our time we will be discussing traits of ghosts.” Standing up from his leaning option at the front of his desk, the German wizard flicked his wand at the board once more. The board wiping clean and a piece of chalk started writing the notes for the lesson. “I suggest taking notes down from the board.” He gestured before continuing on.

“You should know the traits or characteristics of a ghost I assume, Hogwarts has a few. They are transparent versions of their former selves, appearing grey silver in color. Now ghosts cannot move objects but it does appear that wind can cause movement with ghosts.” Thorsten told them as he walked around the room. “I don’t suppose any of you might have a theory as to why that is?” He asked pausing for a moment seeing if anyone knew the answer before going on. “It should be noted ghosts have hard time talking about their deaths as one might expect. They do celebrate their death day however.” He finished as he made his way back to the front of the classroom.

“Now if you have any questions, feel free to ask.” Thorsten told them as he looked up at the clock. “If not then you are dismissed. Next week we will get into ghost abilities.”

Lesson Two

Thorsten had done a whole week of classes and was feeling pretty good about it. He had bright and intelligent students in his fourth year class he had to admit. Sitting at his desk as his students arrived, Thorsten hardly showed any expression as they took their seats. Getting up and going to the front of his desk, he leaned up against it before flicking his wand to the board revealing the subject topic on the board. “Good afternoon,” Thorsten greeted before getting into the topic. “Today we will be discussing the abilities of ghosts.” He informed them before the board wiped clean and a piece of chalk started writing the notes for the lesson.

“The abilities of a ghost probably are as easy to figure as the traits of them.” Thorsten told them as he walked around the room. “They essentially fly, are weightless, and can pass through solid objects. They create disturbances in water, fire and air; changing the temperature around them to be icy cold, and flames appearance blue.” He listed off before making his way to the front of the classroom. “It should be noted ghosts cannot be destroyed although they can become petrified.” He finished before leaning up against his desk. “Now any questions?” Thorsten asked scanning the room.

Lesson Three

Thorsten sat at his desk as his students arrived. He hardly showed any expression as they took their seats. Getting up and going to the front of his desk, he leaned up against it before flicking his wand to the board revealing the day’s plans on the board. Today was going to be a tad different they just didn’t know it yet. “Good afternoon,” Thorsten greeted before getting into the event for the day. “Today you will be meeting a ghost or ghosts.” He informed them.

“You can ask them what you like, though please be polite.” Thorsten told them giving a slight warning to anyone who tried showing disrespect. He didn’t think he had anything to worry about with this group though. “So I will give the floor over to you and them for the day.” He further explained. “It is open discussion, so have fun with it.” He finished before taking his seat again at the desk. “Now I’d like to welcome our guest(s).”

Lesson Four

Thorsten sat at his desk as his students arrived. He hardly showed any expression as they took their seats. Getting up and going to the front of his desk, he leaned up against it before flicking his wand to the board revealing the subject topic on the board. “Good afternoon,” Thorsten greeted before getting into the topic. “Today we will be discussing similarities and differences of ghosts and poltergeists.” He informed them before the board wiped clean and a piece of chalk started writing the notes for the lesson.

“We talked about ghosts and traits before, poltergeists very similar.” Thorsten told them as he walked around the room. “They fly, can go through walls, however they can move solid objects. Where ghosts are passive, poltergeists cause trouble and mischief. Like ghost they cannot be destroyed, however they can be hit by some hexes as humans.” He spoke before making his way to the front of the classroom. “Poltergeists were never human. Thus never lived and died. There is also possibility that they can feel pain, though not injured physically.” He finished before leaning up against his desk. “Now any questions?” Thorsten asked scanning the room.

Ghoul and Ghost Studies III

Ghouls [ ]
Catching Ghouls [ ]
Inferi [ ]
Combating Inferi [ ]

Lesson One

This was Thorsten’s last class of the week and it was with the fifth years. They had there OWLs to study for this year and he hoped to prepare them for it. Though ghoul and ghost studies, wasn’t exactly a hard subject theory wise it was when you had to deal with ghouls that it became more complex. Not that Thorsten was worried about that. He just hoped that they would continue the class next year.

Sitting at his desk as his students arrived, Thorsten hardly showed any expression as he looked to see theirs. Getting up and going to the front of his desk he leaned up against it before flicking his wand to the board revealing the subject topic on the board. “Good morning and welcome back to ghoul and ghost studies. I hope you enjoyed your summers.” Thorsten greeted before reminding them of their upcoming test at the end of the year. “Reminder, you have O.W.L testing this year. So we will be preparing for that through the year.”

“Now, let us review so I know what to focus on later, one topic each please.” Thorsten asked of them before adding. “Once that is done we will continue into new material.”

Listening to his students it looked like they paying attention and at least recalled some information. It was a good base for all the review he was going to do come the end of the year. “Nice to see you remember previous topics, 10 points to each of you.” He said before going on to what the lesson would be. “For the rest of our time we will be discussing ghouls.” Standing up from his leaning option at the front of his desk, the German wizard flicked his wand at the board once more. The board wiping clean and a piece of chalk started writing the notes for the lesson. “I suggest taking notes down from the board.” He gestured before continuing on.

“Ghouls resemble a slimy ogre with buck teeth. They are not so much dangerous but they can be a nuisance. They find their homes in attics or barns of wizarding families. I too had a ghoul at a time, noisy creatures. They mostly groan and throw objects, which makes them rather dimwitted. However, great taking care of pests, as that’s what they eat.” Thorsten told them as he walked around the room. “They resemble a slimy ogre with buck teeth. As the classification suggests, ghouls are not so much dangerous but they can be a nuisance. They find their homes in attics or barns of wizarding families. I too had a ghoul at a time, noisy creatures. They however take care of pests, as that’s what they eat.” He explained before going on. “At the ministry, Ghouls are beasts classified as a scale of two. That means Harmless or may be domesticated. They have the ghoul task force there in the regulation and control department. Their job is to remove unwanted ghouls from houses.” He finished as he made his way back to the front of the classroom.

Turning back around to face his students, Thorsten decided to mention a different type of ghoul. “There are also varieties of ghouls. One in particular, the Chameleon Ghoul can disguise itself into everyday objects. Thus avoiding detection… Now any questions?” He asked before looking up at the clock. “If not then you are dismissed.”

Lesson Two

Thorsten decided to make this class lesson relatively fun. How? He was going to get his students to locate the ghouls in the classroom. That was technically the purpose of the class after all. Standing outside of the classroom, he waited for his students to arrive. “Good morning,” Thorsten greeted before explaining why he was outside of the class today. “Today you might wonder why I’m outside the classroom. We will be catching ghouls today. They are hidden in the room and you’re job is to find, then catch them.” He informed them before going into how to do so.

“The ghouls we will work with are hidden as objects. In order to find them you need the Ghoul Finder Charm. The incantation is Deprendus Lamia, pronounced Dee-PRAIN-dos Lah-mee-ah.” Thorsten told them carefully pronouncing it despite his German accent. “Wand movement is a tiny flick. If successful tip of wand will glow from faint yellow to velvet red the closer you get to a ghoul. The red glow appears when within a three meter radius of a ghoul.” He explained. “Concentration on spell means it will remain active. Lack of concentration breaks spell. As for capture be creative, no fire please.” He finished before letting them into the room. “Now good luck, details of spell are on board for reference” Thorsten told them allowing them to have at locating the several ghouls thought the classroom.

Blackboard
Name of the spell Deprendus Lamia
Pronunciation of the spell Dee-PRAIN-dos Lah-mee-ah
Meaning behind the name Deprendo: to detect; Lamia: ghoul
Wand movements required to preform properly A tiny flick.
Effects of the spell To wand tip will glow a faint yellow and turns velvet red when a ghoul is nearby. The wand will only glow red if the ghoul is within a three meter radius.
Are the effects lasting? The spell will last as long as the wizard or witch concentrates. Once the concentration is broken, the spell will be broken.

“Today we will be discussing Inferi.” He informed them before the board wiped clean and a piece of chalk started writing the notes for the lesson.

“Inferi or an inferius is a dead body reanimated by dark art of Necromancy, Which is the art of raising the dead.” Thorsten told them as he walked around the room. “They are bewitched to do dark wizard’s bidding much like a zombie. As such they have no free will and cannot think for themselves." He said before adding. "These gaunt, skeletal beings appear pale white in color but very in eye and hair color like any other human.”

“Clearly no spell can bring back the dead making Inferi merely corpse puppets and not living. They cannot feel, as such they are immune to bodily harm and have enough strength to kill even drag human away.” Thorsten continued as he continued back up to the front of the room. “It can be noted that they can speak as well.” He added before asking. “Now any questions?”

Lesson Four

Thorsten sat at his desk as his students arrived. He hardly showed any expression as they took their seats. Getting up and going to the front of his desk, he leaned up against it before flicking his wand to the board revealing the subject topic on the board. “Good morning,” Thorsten greeted before getting into the topic. “Today we will be continuing with our discussion with Inferi.” He informed them before the board wiped clean and a piece of chalk started writing the notes for the lesson.

“Combating Inferi is relatively simple. Being dark creatures, stands reason they dislike light. Since merely corpses heat in turn burning is also effective.” Thorsten told them as he walked around the room. “Thus fire-summoning spells are useful tool to kill Inferi." He said before adding as he headed back up to the front. "Incendio good for one or two Inferi. For an army fire charm Lustro Circulus would be better, as it is larger and encircles you thus drawing them away. Since it is quite dangerous we will not work on it, however the spell is on the board for your interest.”

Thorsten turned back to his class as he leaned on his desk. “It should be noted, Inferi feel no pain and do not bleed. Thus, making them resistant to most spells that afflicted pain or injury.” He pointed out before asking. “Now any questions?”

Blackboard
Name of the spell Lustro Circulus
Pronunciation of the spell Lus-tro Kir-ku-lus
Wand movements required to preform properly Overhead circles
Effects of the spell Produces a large crimson and gold ring of fire from around the caster's wand. When the caster moves, the ring of flame will move with them in the same direction, swirling like a flaming lasso. The caster may also shoot jets or balls of flame at individual targets or opponents while the fire is still being produced, which will inflict a small amount of damage to them.
Ghoul and Ghost Studies IV

Review
Shades [ ]
Waystation [ ]

Lesson One

Thorsten's early mornings had become a lot easier compared to when his daughter was a kid. Now that she was grown he didn't need to worry so much. Mornings were certainly more lax for him which was nice. This class would be an easy one. As he didn’t plan on getting into any new material, just review. Not the most exciting class but for the rest of the year he knew it would be far more interesting.

I hope you had good summers.” Thorsten greeted before continuing on. “Since you had your testing last year, I'd like review.” He informed them.

“Was their anything you were unsure of?” Thorsten asked of them before adding. “One topic each please. Questions and comments are welcome.”

Lesson Two

Yet another early Friday morning and Thorsten was preparing his second to last lesson of the week. Today he was going to dive right into the new material. Sitting at his desk as his students arrived, he hardly showed any expression as they took their seats. Getting up and going to the front of his desk, he leaned up against it before flicking his wand to the board revealing the subject topic on the board. “Good morning,” Thorsten greeted before getting into the topic. “Today we will be discussing the topic of Shades.” He informed them before the board wiped clean and a piece of chalk started writing the notes for the lesson. “I suggest taking notes down from the board.” He gestured before continuing on.

“Shades are not to be confused with ghosts. Though spirits, they are conjured by extremely rare magic. Appear more physically solid than a ghost, but less than a living body.” Thorsten told them as he walked around the room. “Rumor is the resurrection stone is one of them." He mentioned before continuing back up to the front of the room. "Shades are recalled souls of the departed, with no permanent existence. That said once the spell responsible ends, they evidently disappear.” He finished before asking. “Now, any questions?”

“Today we will be discussing the topic of the Waystation.” He informed them before the board wiped clean and a piece of chalk started writing the notes for the lesson.

“The waystation may very well be limbo. As mentioned back in first year it is place between life and death. It is possible to be the place where one decides to remain or go on. Its appearance differs to each person who visits and appears inside a person’s mind.” Thorsten told them as he walked around the room. “Being inside one’s mind makes it both real and unreal. Shades as discussed previous may appear to individuals in the waystation. These possible shades however appear more solid then ghosts, and able to be physically touched." He mentioned before continuing back up to the front of the room. “Now, any questions?” Thorsten asked as he leaned up against his desk.

Lesson One

First class of the new year and Thorsten was looking forward to it. He imagined todays class wouldn’t be difficult as they’d be reviewing everything for NEWT testing. He needed to prepare his students for anything including practical hands on work. Not that Thorsten was worried about that. He just hoped that they would succeed and perhaps move on to bigger and better things. He was happy to be the one to prepare them for the biggest test of their lives.
