Marius walked the hallways of doors looking for one in particular. He had been through a few times and once just earlier today. The doors on either side of him were so unique. He came across a door that he hadn’t seen before. How had he not seen this one? It wasn’t so much a door as some were in this realm, but more along the line of gold coins. Upon further inspection, is was not a pile of coins, but scale. It was a pile a golden scales, each one holding a red sheen. He reached for the door and felt a searing heat radiating from it. This was the door. This was the one he needed. Not the one he had been looking for, but the one he needed at the moment.

He pushed through the door and the sight before him was one unlike anything he had ever seen. A solid gold dragon was in the process of becoming human. Across the field, Marius felt a male presence. He warped through the dream and was beside him. He took on his appearance, an inch taller, broader through the shoulders. Dark, dark red hair brushed his shoulders. His skin shaded to a golden tan. Finished with his new look, he willed the other man to vanish.

He re-focused on the dragon, only the dragon was no longer a dragon. It was Faye. He felt his heart twinge. He couldn’t do this to her. Not her. She was very attractive, but… His hunger flared as she stalked towards, smiling and naked. She was laughing. He met her half way and she threw her arms around his neck. She was warm against him.

                  //////////

Marius resumed his search for the watery door. Having fed, he simply willed it to him and it was there. Before he even touched the door he smiled. She was calling to him. Maren was alive! He forced himself through the door. The dream faded in and knew then this was not going to be pleasant… He found himself in the clearing of a forest. He was not alone however. There was a body, a naga, with a spear jutting through his chest. He had seen this before. There was a shuffling in the low laying foliage. Marius widened his eyes. Maren.

He quickly turned the scene to the city of his birth. The two of them stood on one of the crowded piers of Venice. He looked out across the canal, missing his home. Loving the view of the gondolas cutting through the water. He could hear the singing of one lanky looking driver with an empty. He looked back at Maren. She was naked and covered in henna. Her lovely rainbow tail coiled beneath her. She needed clothes for their venture.

Marius took the liberty of shifting her. Considering the temperature, and the fact that he could change the temperature, he dressed her lightly. Nice dark blue skinny jeans, seemingly well worn, with multiple tears down the front of both legs. He put her in a cute, pale blue, silk chiffon, crop top. It exposed her bell, but just a little. Considering where she came from, he figured that would be fine. The shoes he put her in were a bit iffy, but he thought she looked nice in the light blue suede pumps. To finish off the outfit, he gave her simple blue stone bracelet and a sliver ring with a large blue gem. For a necklace, her put a silver drape chocker on her. He had to admit that he had done a damn good job.
Shame she can't dress like this all the time...

Now Marius had to do something about that turban. He understood that it was a part of her culture, but they were in Venice. They were in his home. He had the turban vanish. Her beautiful red hair spilled down her back in a long braid. He kind of liked the braid, but the turban had made it frizzy. Instead he thought to put her hair into a simple messy bun, tendrils of hair floating around her face and the back of her neck. Now she was done.

Marius smirked at her, a mixture of emotions filling his head. He was relieved to see she was alright. He wondered what she knew, what she had been told. Would she try to cast him out? Would she hate him? Or would she think something else entirely? He needed to explain what had happened. Hopefully she would understand. Hopefully.

“Glad to see you’re alright. I was worried about you,” he spoke with a gentle smile.

The infirmary was almost empty. Deja had gone with Ethika and Yon. Rumi, Luc, and their companions had left as well. She couldn’t see Kajin beyond the curtain near her cot. Keiran was still around, however, and even though she couldn’t see Kajin, she could hear the mechanical humming of his nanobots as they monitored the room.

With all the blankets and Ethika’s warming pan, Maren was cozy, but perhaps too much so. The covers were turned up to her nose. She was afraid if she reached out beyond the cocoon of warmth her limbs would stiffen up again. Either way, due to cold sickness or comforting warmth, the stress of the day was tiring her. Her body needed sleep. Her mind was sinking deeper into that darkness, but her stubborn will was fighting it. She didn’t want to wake up a mess in front of her friends. She didn’t want to have the nightmare at all to begin with.

Her hands groped for her neck only to remember that the Abayomi’s necklace, along with its protective talisman had broken long ago and now rested in fraying threads under her pillow. She covered her head with the blankets and turned away from Kieran. If she couldn’t keep awake, maybe she could get help to stop the dream from happening. Mars would understand if she asked for a favor this once. If she was alone she would handle it herself.

Finally, hours after lights out, Maren let herself drift off, murmuring the dream demon’s name in her head.

She was just leaving the temple where she’d been preparing for her upcoming wedding. The giddiness was overwhelming, clinging to her smile like the humidity that stuck to her skin as she maneuvered through the thick undergrowth of the jungle. She couldn’t see the sky through the canopy, but no sunlight dappled through the leaves. The animals were still, and she could feel the coming storm with every fiber of her being. Too strong to cast it off. She was trying to get to her burrow quickly. Her henna had yet to dry completely and the rain would smear the stain--

“Glad to see you’re alright. I was worried about you,”

Maren was standing on a pier overlooking the river roads of what she’d recently learned was Venice. She looked down at her hands. Her skin was clear of ink, she was wearing jeans and…heels. She didn’t fully understand what had happened until she saw Mars beside her. His facing clearing the last foggy remnants of dreaming into lucidity. He’d answered her call, and her dream had taken a different turn from--she wouldn’t think about it.

”Thanks, for this… I’m, well I’m in the infirmary right now.” He at least deserved to know why she was intruding on his usual routine. ”Kajin wouldn’t let me leave, and I didn’t want to wake the other people there…” She shrugged and offered awkward half-smile.

”Thanks, for this… I’m, well I’m in the infirmary right now. Kajin wouldn’t let me leave, and I didn’t want to wake the other people there…” She shrugged her shoulders with a half-smile and Marius had to wonder…

“Do you remember anything from before the infirmary?” Marius knew he could be digging himself a hole, but he had to know. And so did she, possibly. She was acting normal. Or treating him thusly. He cocked his head to the side. “I found you passed out under a tree…” Guess that was as good as any starting point. He turned from the water and started down the cobblestone walkway. There was a nice ice cream shop nearby and he thought she would like to try some. Especially with the potentially bad news he was going to deliver.

“Do you like ice cream? I can’t remember if you’ve mentioned eating it before,” He held his hand out to her and then noticed that he was ungloved. He blinked at his hand and he was safe to the touch, thin black satin gloves covering both hands. It was a short jaunt to the parlor. There was and outdoor bar style seating area that put ones back in the sun and he loved sitting there. He ordered a coffee and caramel swirl in a bowl. “You have an idea as to what you would want? They have all kinds.” He wasn’t avoiding the topic, but he was trying to sate her before its deliverance.

“Do you remember anything from before the infirmary?” Maren looked at him, leaning on the wall of the bridge overlooking the waters, and shook her head. “I found you passed out under a tree…”

Maren’s brow furrowed. ”I thought Cas and his friend found me…”

Mars turned from the railing and started down the path. Maren had a hard time following him. What on earth had Mars done to her feet? She looked down as she stumbled down the path. Heels. Mars had dressed her up in heels. This pair was even worse than the pair that crazy bird-witch creature dressed her up in for the Halloween dance. ”Wait up…!” Painful flashbacks of that horrible tango bubbled to the surface as she traipsed along, the distance between herself and Mars growing until she finally stopped in the middle of the street, took off her shoes, and chucked them into the river.

”Right where those wretched creations belong.” she muttered before catching up with her friend.

“Do you like ice cream? I can’t remember if you’ve mentioned eating it before.” Marius turned around as Maren was catching her breath, barefoot on the cobblestone.

”I’ve heard of it,” she said. ”I haven’t tried it yet because I heard it’s cold…”

He held out his hand, which she took after he’d gloved it, and he lead her to a seat in the sun and placed an order. “You have an idea as to what you would want? They have all kinds.”

”You think it’ll be okay for me to eat. I heard this stuff freezes your brain. I don’t know if I can handle that. I’m still recovering, remember?” Maren joked as she sat down next to him. She fiddled with some napkins as his order was brought out. ”You weren’t in Kajin’s office... Cas didn’t mention you at all. If you found me, why weren’t you there? What happened?”

Marius cringed when Maren said she thought someone else found her. Cas. When she’d called for him to wait, he laughed quietly to himself as she tossed her shows in the river. He should have known not to put her in heels. He’d never seen her in them, but he thought she looked nice. She still looked nice.

“I’ve heard of it. I haven’t tried it yet because I heard it’s cold… You think it’ll be okay for me to eat. I heard this stuff freezes your brain. I don’t know if I can handle that. I’m still recovering, remember?” She seemed to be joking. It was cute. She was cute. This was not him crushing. This was totally him crushing.

“I got you. You'll have all the taste without the freeze. Though you’d have to be careful if you ever eat it while awake,” he smiled. His ice cream was presented to him and he grinned at it. He spooned some of the sweet dessert into his mouth. Yum. This was the only technically mushy food that he liked. “Do you like swe – “

“You weren’t in Kajin’s office... Cas didn’t mention you at all. If you found me, why weren’t you there? What happened?” There it was the question he knew he had to answer. Even knew how to answer. What he was worried about was whether or not she would believe him.

“I found you first. I didn’t question you sleeping in the cold… I should have,” He put his spoon down and turned to look at her. He could hear the water lapping at the walls of the canal. The setting was soothing and he wished they could just chill. Just take in the sights of his home. “I tried to get in your dream. I could hear your heart slowing down. I freaked out. So when I woke up and you wouldn’t… Yeah, my first thought was body heat. That is a thing. An actual survival skill.”

“So yeah, Cas and friend found me standing over you mid-strip. I know that sounds bad. I even know that looks bad. He decked me. I went down. They carried you away,”
Marius made eye contact the entire time. He was serious. He needed her to know that he hadn’t meant anything untoward. “I’m assuming one of them has some kind of healing thing going on, because you were almost dead. I planned on warming you enough to get you back to the school. That’s all. I swear.”

That was the story. He left out Mari and Eva because they weren’t important to the telling of the story. They were a nice segue at the time. Had probably saved his face another punch. But right now, they were simply a nice memory for him. All Marius wanted was the continuation of his friendship with Maren. That was all.

Mars told her that while she shouldn’t try eating ice cream in the waking world, here she could experience it like a human would. There were a lot of flavors, all sweets. She wasn’t particularly into sweets, but she ate fruit from time to time… She ordered passion fruit because it was something she was familiar with. It did not taste like passion fruit, but it wasn’t bad. It also wasn’t good. Mostly she didn’t have an opinion. It was just weird.

She stirred it around in her bowl, brows furrowed at it as if that would make the next spoonful taste better somehow. She settled for picking out the chunks of actual fruit while Mars answered her question.

“I found you first. I didn’t question you sleeping in the cold… I should have,” Maren looked up from her ice cream. How could he not question that? “I tried to get in your dream. I could hear your heart slowing down. I freaked out. So when I woke up and you wouldn’t… Yeah, my first thought was body heat. That is a thing. An actual survival skill.”

Maren knew nothing about surviving cold weather, though her mother told her about hibernation, where her family would burrow together for the winter to keep warm...still though… She frowned into her bowl, not liking where this was going. Doubts about his species unfurled in the back of her mind.

“So yeah, Cas and friend found me standing over you mid-strip. I know that sounds bad. I even know that looks bad. He decked me. I went down. They carried you away.” Mid-strip? Maren took a deep breath, every time she looked up his eyes were boring into her own. She didn’t care about nudity normally but...something uncomfortable rolled in her stomach...usually she was aware of the fact. Cas wasn’t ordinarily a violent person, an annoying person to be sure, but not violent. “I’m assuming one of them has some kind of healing thing going on, because you were almost dead. I planned on warming you enough to get you back to the school. That’s all. I swear.”

When she woke up in Kajin’s office she’d been completely unable to move at first, a level of cold she had never experienced before. Could she have really died out there, just outside of school? What if no one found her?

Abayomi’s face flashed in her mind and she put down her ice cream, suddenly unable to stomach the artificial flavor.

There was no doubt that she was in bad shape...and why would Mars tell her this if he had really been trying to...take advantage of the situation? The most primal part of her, the part that smelled the faintest hint of feathers on him and didn’t trust it, told her that the best liars always told as much of the truth as they could to hide the lie.

”I...” She stood up, chewing her nail. What was she supposed to be feeling right now? Violated? No, not quite. Angry? Not necessarily. Uncomfortable. She felt...extremely uncomfortable. ”I need to think about this.”

Marius could feel her tension through a slight ripple in the dream. Maren abandoned her ice cream and he knew it would not be returned to. He willed the sweet dessert away, his going with it. He could feel her distrust radiating through the dream… Perhaps he should leave her to her thoughts? No. No that would mean leaving her to the death scene her mind seemed determined to present her. Her heard her voice and watched her get to her feet one of her fingernails between her teeth.

“I need to think about this.” Of course she did. No sane person would take what he had just said and be fine with it. Now what was he supposed to do. Did he just wander off? Did he just sit there? What should he say? He blinked in a flutter of aggravation. He got to his feet as well and moved a bit ahead of her, looking towards the water.

“I understand,” he spoke in a low tone. Marius took in a deep breath, the salt in the air soothing him to a degree. It was her choice if she believed him or not. He wouldn’t blame her. He was an Incubus after all. It would have been in his nature to try and seduce her. To try to trick her into his arms. That’s not who is. He walks to the closet railing and sits with his legs over the edge and chest against it. “This dream is yours. Just tell me what you want to happen. I’ll be here.” He had told her the truth. The rest was up to her.
