I grew up a Nintendo(/Playstation) child so I've played since the NES days. I'm a huge Legend of Zelda nerd. XD
It's probably just because I'm used to them, but I never understood why people thought that they were the worst. I actually liked the N64 controller. But I still feel that Playstation has all others beat for best controller. XD;

Oh my gosh, that's ridiculous just for movies tickets! No thank you! XD;
But yeah, I hate to go when it's halfway full or more. Somehow we always get stuck next to or right in front of some giant assholes. When we went to see each part of The Hobbit, we could hardly watch the movies because of other people. By the time we reached the third part, we were so fed up that we called out the dudebro jerk sitting behind us and embarrassed him in front of his girlfriend. (He had been loudly making "funny" observations about the movie right in our ear the whole time.)

Oh, that sucks; I feel your pain! TT o TT
Buuuut nice that you have time for Sims now. XD

I was Playstation/Sega (my best friend had a Sega, she's also had a PC which is why Doom is probably my first real video game experience, other than maybe pong). My friends who had Nintendo consoles when I was little weren't so good at the sharing so never really got to play with one until much later and trying to get used to a controller that was designed for three hands, or with no consideration for the shape of human hands (we hold things in a rounded fashion, what is with square controllers?!?) was too difficult. It's probably why I liked the GameCube best as it had the most "normal" controller of the Nintendo consoles. I didn't even try playing with the Wii-U controller when visiting friends last Christmas. My main love as a kid were Crash and Kain.

When my brother and I bought our first console together (when I was around 9) I wanted a Nintendo (b/c it's what my friends has even if they didn't let me use it, barring the one friend with the Sega but we weren't even considering that) and my younger brother wanted a PlayStation. He won, but it's the one time I'm glad he did. I'll play party games like racing or brawl on a Nintendo at parties but overall never got into any of their series, but they are the best for party games. PlayStation definitely wins controller though. biggrin

Yea I definitely like to go when it's less crowded and hope that nobody will sit near me. Luckily people are less likely to sit near people if they don't have to in the UK. I haven't had any experiences ruined lately, but I think the only thing I saw even close to it's release date in the last several years was Godzilla (went with a group of people so was well insulated from any possible annoying strangers). Otherwise usually waiting a month to see most films and by then it's usually a theater comprised of people like me, people who waited for a better and quieter experience, so it's not too bad.

I had a Genesis when I was a kid, but that was the only Sega system we had. I liked most of the games we had for it like the old Sonic games, ToeJam and Earl, X-men.

Ha ha! I grew up with the NES controller so it never bothered me to play with it, but I know what you mean. The Genesis controller was way better. It was curvy and easy to hold without getting wrist cramps. XD
GameCube is definitely Nintendo's best controller though.

I think Playstation had the best game series back then, to be honest. Legend of Zelda will always be my favorite, but back then there weren't any other series that I was interested in. Just some casual-like games like Super Mario 64 or Donkey Kong and, of course, the party games. But Playstation had Final Fantasy, Metal Gear Solid, Legacy of Kain, etc.

Well, hopefully Star Wars will be one of those times that we don't have trouble. I don't want to have to put up with a crowd of die-hard Star Wars fans if I can help it. . _ .;

I've only ever played on a Genesis, I don't think I know anybody who even owned any other system. But yea I liked Sonic, Streets of Rage (I think that's what it was called), a bunch of racing games. There were other games but again wasn't my system so don't remember them all very well. I remember at my friend's (who owned the system) birthday party that everyone was playing dress up and karaoke and whatever and I was out in the playhouse with her little brother playing Sega all night. And then in the morning we played cops and robbers and I was a robber with her brother (and one girl who had to for numbers consent to being on our team) while everyone else wanted to be cops. Her mother thanked me for playing with Todd and told my mother how nice I was for playing with the brother. I remember thinking, 'nice? I got to play video games (didn't have a console then) and who wants to be the cop in cops and robbers, that's like wanting to be it in tag/hide and go seek, this had nothing to do with nice.' But I loved being praised for doing exactly what I wanted to do.

I can't even remember the Genesis controller but I know I never gave it a second thought so clearly it was normal enough (and designed for hands enough) to not give it a second though. Yea I think part of what was really great about PlayStation was it was really good at coming up with story games, it was the best solo gamer system. There was this flow chart I saw several years back that basically told you what system to buy based on how you game. If you like to game alone go for Playstation, if you like to play online Xbox and if you like to play with real people Nintendo. It's probably very apt. It's why I have no patience for things like online only mode or subscription games. I started really gaming on a system that sold really good games that were complete and didn't require extra bits or friends to be good.

Are you going opening weekend for Star Wars? If so good luck. Will probably go after Christmas. Partner's away this weekend visiting his grandma (usually we'd go there for Christmas but with his mother only just out of hospital after the end stages of her cancer treatment we are staying in Wales) and he's not off work until the 23rd and which point we'll go to his parents. Will aim to see it before New Year, and try hard to avoid spoilers until then. I'm more looking forward to Civil War and even Independence Day 2 though. I didn't even know that'd finally gotten off the ground and is coming out next year until the trailer went online a few days ago. I worry that it's going to be a sequel to something that really didn't need a sequel but the trailer looked decent enough.

Oh yeah, Streets of Rage was a good one too! The only racing one we had was Road Rage, which was also one of my favorites.
And I know what you mean, ha ha! I've always been a tomboy so when I played with the neighbors, I would include the little brothers (Most of them were actually my age. The girls that live on my street were all older than me.) since I often got along with them better. I thought it was weird when people would praise me for it, even though I thought nothing of it. XD

I saw that chart as well~
And agreed. I have zero patience for games that don't have a single player mode. I only really like playing online with people I know. I don't like being thrown together with a bunch of strangers that may be the alpha douche type. There aren't that many of those type (I've only had a bad online experience once or twice.) but it's such a pain when it happens that it kills my desire to play. xD;

Nah, I didn't go on opening weekend. I'm waiting until after the first of the year. I'm hoping that all the people who want to see will have seen it by then so that we can see it in a mostly empty theater. xD;
Tyler's parents tried to get us to go on Christmas, but I predicted that the theater would be full of people going to see it with their families. Turned out that it was and a huge family sitting behind them ruined the movie for them so I'm glad I didn't go. Especially because they didn't go for the matinee so they paid full price to have the movie messed up. No thanks. x o x

Hey, btw, have you heard of that game Undertale that's all over the place?
PostPosted: Wed Dec 30, 2015 9:52 am

I can't remember the names of any of the early racing games I played on Sega. My favourite racing games when I moved onto PlayStation were Rage Racer and Jet Moto. I also remember I found the Grand Turismo series very disappointing.

I wasn't quite a tomboy, I loved sports and games and outdoors things, and loved playing with the boys, but I also was the biggest Barbie person as a child. As I got older I decided I only wanted kids so it'd be acceptable to play with Barbies again. xd I think Sims kind of filled the niche that Barbies left once I felt too old for them.

Same on the online games. I have been playing a lot of Dota 2 and L4D2 lately but only with my partner and at least a couple of his friends as I'm not going to play with a bunch of strangers. Dota definitely attracts some alpha douches and definitely had one of my own few bad experiences with that game over the weekend. Basically the other team had leveled far beyond us and they just refused to end the game (destroy our base) and just kept killing us again and again and again. Was super frustrating as you are punished for quitting in that game. It's definitely a game I wouldn't have bothered with in the first place if I didn't have so many friends who play it and thus offer some sort of buffer from assholes.

Saw Star Wars yesterday actually, we came back from my partner's family on Monday and are going to see friends for NYE from tomorrow so decided that would be easiest before Tom went back to work next week (figured Tuesday would be better than this weekend). It luckily wasn't too crowded but still a bit more crowded than I would have liked, but everyone in the cinema was good so it was okay. Shame about the experience being ruined for your partner's family, hopefully it'll be much quieter by the time you go. Will refrain from mentioning it until you do. biggrin

The title Undertale sounds familiar but other than that I can't say I'm familiar with the game.

I didn't like the older Grand Turismo games either, but the newer ones are a lot of fun. We have a fancy steering wheel that has a thing inside it that pulls against the driver to make it feel more like driving a car. It's really cool. :3
I'm more of a Need for Speed kind of person though.

Ha ha! I wasn't a Barbie kid at all. Everyone would buy me Barbies for my birthday or Christmas. I'd politely tell them thank you, but on the inside I wanted Ninja Turtles or Power Rangers. XD
But I know what you mean about looking forward to having kids so that you can play with toys again. I'm looking forward to playing with Legos and stuff~

Ugh, that sucks! I've never played Dota so I don't really know anything about it. I think it has the reputation of being popular with those kinds of people though, which is why I wasn't interested in it. D;
The worst online experience I had wasn't near that bad; I just laughed at it, in fact. I was playing L4D2 online for the first time, and the first couple games I did were fine. It was fun and I was lucky enough to get teams that weren't full of jerks. But I accidentally ended up on one of those modded servers where you have infinite ammo and you can fly and stuff. Most of the team was playing as if the mods weren't there, as was I. But this one douche was flying across the map, leaving all of us to be Tank'd and stuff. Then he was screaming in his microphone about us being shitty at the game. I finally told him off (over chat because I didn't have a microphone at the time) and he screamed something I couldn't understand, shot me a couple times, and left the game. XD;

I finally saw it last weekend! The theater was packed, but we sat in the closer rows that no one wants so there was just a small family behind us. The only complaint I had was the kid behind me periodically kicked my seat. (Not just once though, they'd kick it like they were fending off an attacker. @ n @)

I'll go ahead and put spoiler tags just in case some one else reads this. I don't wanna spoil it for them. > o >

I had already suspected that Han was going to be killed off so that didn't come as much of a surprise, unfortunately. But I had been under the impression before that Finn was the main character so I was surprised when Rey was revealed to be the one who was Force sensitive.

So what did you think of it? biggrin

It's an RPG made by the guy who composes the music for that Homestuck comic thing as a tribute to games like EarthBound.
I bought it a little while back and it's really good. During battles, you control your soul to dodge the enemy's attacks. And you don't have to kill anyone to beat the game.
If you want to see what it's like, here's a video of the first boss battle. It doesn't have any spoilers or anything since it's really early in the game. :3

I never had the steering wheel but my friend who got me into PS racing games did and b/c I didn't own it I never got very good with it so wasn't too fussed sticking with the controller. I can't recall if I ever played Need for Speed, there were a lot of games that I played once or twice at a friends but never got and names didn't stick.

Lego! Yes that is also something I'd greatly look forward to. I just liked all toys pretty much, but Barbie was my favourite toy for playing in my head versus the toy itself needed to be cool. But if I have kids I'll definitely try to have either gender playing with all toys and playing together. And of course having kids pick out their own toys. I think more than finding the 'pink aisle' problematic as an influence for girls I find it sad when parents try to force boys to play with boy toys. I mean the pink aisle can be problematic but girls are rarely told they can't play with certain toys. I mean I definitely don't think it was my childhood toys that influenced my approach to sciences and more a lack of teachers who supported female students, even female teachers, in STEM subjects.

I prefer playing bot matches with friends on DOTA rather than playing online but I've played online when people want to play online. I mean sometimes people are good, but there is definitely a mentality to abuse people for not being good at the game which I don't like. Especially if you are on the opposite team, like why don't you just thrill at having an easy win rather than be a douche? I really like L4D2 but I've never played with strangers (or mods). I don't even think flying over everything would even be fun, kind of defeats the point of the game. Basically I still haven't embraced online modes and strangers too much. Other than occasionally leaving a Killing Floor server open for people to join. My partner always makes them friends only or puts on a password but in that game I don't care too much and the only consequence is if they quit, as the amount of zombies that spawn are based on the number of players. Recently started playing Borderlands 2 (though never played the first game) on the PS3 with my partner and that's been a lot of fun. I've wanted a good co-op story game and this one I think has been the best so far.

That sucks about the kid, hope it wasn't too distracting.

I'll use spoiler tags as well, that seems like a good idea, I probably should use them more often than I do but generally just assume conversations won't be read by wanderers, but you never know.

I don't think I suspected Han was going to die but I figured the original main characters would be more in the background. So once he was actually much more in the foreground than I imagined I wasn't surprised. Pretty much from when he called it his son's name you knew here it is. That was the only thing about it that was a bit frustrating as Abrams really drew the scene out but everyone knew where it was going so it felt like it was supposed to have suspense but never could - not unless you'd never seen any of the other Star Wars films. So it was disappointing and kind of a shitty way to go (though I can't think of what would have been better), but yea, it made sense even if only from the perspective that Han would take over the new franchise if he was kept around.

I did not think Finn was the main character I thought Rey was, so that didn't surprise me. I mean I got from the trailer he was a stormtrooper and I figured he'd be a defected one but didn't think he'd be the force guy. Although I also wouldn't be surprised at this point if he still proves to be force sensitive in addition to Rey, I could see that happening.

Overall though I liked it, honestly I could probably say it's my favourite film in the franchise. The prequels were too dull and horrible, 4-6 I just never got into the story/characters but I think 7 has enough that's familiar, enough that's new and enough that's good that I enjoy it more on it's own than any of the others. I think Rey and Finn have made a good duo thus far and I think this was well done for set up. The big challenge now is going somewhere with that set up. I think where Abrams screwed up with the Star Trek reboot was not moving on past setup/paying homage to the original source material after the first film.

Well I just watched Yahtzee's review of 2015 last year and he was all OMG UNDERTALE so while I wasn't familiar with it before it's been brought to my attention now. Will definitely put it on the list to check out as I'm always looking for RPGs that are good. And options for non-violent resolution in rpgs are almost non-existent so intrigued by that too. Will probably wait for the summer sale or something, hopefully be near done with my PhD. At the very least will wait until I finish Borderlands which will probably only be a weekend thing for now. Finally got some momentum back into my thesis so going to try and plow forward and be hopeful. xd

Yikes! I didn't realize it had been so long since you posted! Sorry about taking so long~ x o x

But yeah, Tyler still has all of his old Lego sets so we've had "Lego day" more than once. We pull out our favorite sets and put them together to see who can set them up the fastest. XD
I agree about wanting to let kids play with whatever toy they like. I don't think that the girls section is particularly "bad" one way or the other. I just look at it like if the girl is interested in that kind of toy, that aisle must be like heaven for her. It would be wrong to deprive her of the opportunity to enjoy girly toys if that's her thing. If she's not into pink and frills, however, she can make the decision to peruse the rest of the aisles for something else and more parents should be okay with that thinking too. And it should go the same way for boys. They should be free to play with traditionally "feminine" toys as well without fear of being called a "sissy" or whatever. surprised
My family was ultra conservative, I guess, so I was pressured as a kid to play with the female toys, and a lot of my family was disappointed because I was more interested in action figures, Hot Wheels, and Nerf guns than Barbies, cooking sets, and dress up. I wasn't really allowed to have the toys I wanted. But it really doesn't bother me thinking back on it. In the long run, it didn't really affect me at all. I played with my brother's toys and I still tend to lean toward "boy-like" activities, regardless of what others think. So yeah, I don't buy into the argument that female toys influence little girls to not become scientists either. XD
(omg, this post turned into a book; I'm so sorry! XD)

I know, right!? If someone thinks that you're bad at a game, you'd think they'd just be happy to have an easy victim. XD
And agreed about the mods. I hate the modded servers and avoid them whenever I can, but L4D2 has a tendency to throw you into one even when you don't want it. Another reason I stopped playing online. D;

Maybe it's been so long now that everyone's seen FA already, but just in case, I'll still use spoiler tags. XD

Yeah, I can completely understand them wanting Han to die to make room for the new characters. He really would steal the show if they kept him around.
I did like the way that the scene played out though. Younger people or less nerdy individuals who hadn't seen the older movies probably felt more suspense, but even though I knew it was coming, there was still a little hope that maybe he could bring Kylo back to the light. I've been to see the movie twice, and I actually found the scene to be more poignant the second time around somehow. But that may just be me. XD;

I guess the reason that I thought that Finn was the main character initially is because I refused to watch the trailers after the first one. Rey was only in it for a second, and I didn't even remember she was in the trailer until after watching the movie. XD;

It was definitely my favorite of the movies. I didn't enjoy the prequels either, especially after watching them recently and seeing how badly the CG aged. Revenge of the Sith was entirely filmed on a green screen set, and it's terribly noticeable, not to mention the bad acting through-out the whole thing. x o x
I never actually saw the Star Trek reboot, but hopefully the same thing won't happen with Star Wars. Now that he's paid tribute to the original trilogy, it's time to move on with the new characters and story.

Ha ha! I hope it was "OMG UNDERTALE" in a positive way. I haven't watched any of his videos recently so I didn't even know he'd talked about it.
But yeah, it's a great game, probably one of my favorites now. I'll stop talking about it now so that I don't spoil anything by accident. XD;

Oh an update yay! Sorry for the delayed reply, only noticed it a few days ago and was in the middle of a massive deadline then.

Lego day sounds amazing, I definitely would do that if I had more Lego sets. One day. I think unless a family is specifically trying to enforce gender roles there is usually a fair amount of mixing "boy" and "girl" toys when you don't have solo gender kids as generally you want them to play together. My brother even got some Barbies for that reason, though he was never interested in them and I was never interested in sharing Barbies. But yea, I definitely think experiences in education are more influential than what toys you play with.

Yea I've never played L4D (1 or 2) on open servers, usually just find at least one person who wants to play and play friends only. I think if there is an option to play friends only I usually do even if I'm playing alone (friends and not asshats can then join me). But yea, frankly I am not at all bothered by people who suck at games, challenges are fun but so are easy wins. In games like Dota that's just easy leveling there.

I do hate spoiling things for people so may as well just in case.

I guess I just can't suspend disbelief enough for that to work for me. I know this is the first film of a planned trilogy, I know that even if they manage to convert the bad guy it probably won't be in movie one. Best case scenario Han would just have been injured and maybe still had a less obvious death later, but yea I just couldn't really watch the scene with hope or suspense. It was said though as I would have liked Han and Leia to have had a bit more of a moment first. Ah well, Star Wars loves ghost reunion afterlives and I'm sure they'll get theirs one day (even if not in an actual film, though won't count that possibility out). razz

I think I only remember Rey from the trailers, I can't even recall Finn, not sure why she stood out but she did. Also Luke voice over to his family probably had me looking for a white main character and if I noticed Finn he did not register as filling that role. However I'm very happy with both of them, and was nice having a film with a minority and female lead. Don't know if they are going to now make Finn gay as there's speculation/hope about, but that would be fantastic and I hope they do.

Yea I think I've only seen each of the prequels the one time I saw them in cinemas back in high school, and at the time sure I found Hayden Christensen (I'm sure I'm spelling his name now but can't be bothered to go look it up) cute. But the second film was beyond dull, the dialogue was bad and there was too much of it. I mean I'm all for dialogue heavy films, just not when it's trite, pointless, dull or just dumb and the prequels managed to successfully hit all of those areas at some point. The prequel characters also weren't as good, and of course restricted by needing to fit into roles that would lead up to films that came before it. Fantasy and Sci-fi (and Star Wars is a bit of both of these) are all about world building, so it's hard to make a decent world building film when you are restricted but they still could have done better. Darth Vader deserved better origins than what he got, the worst part.

I think J.J. isn't directing the second Star Wars (another too lazy to go look moment but that's what I was told) but just producing so hopefully the J.J. sequel trap won't be an issue here. Killing off main characters and focusing heavily on new characters is a good sign that they plan to move forward rather than live in nostalgia though.

Yes it was definitely OMG in a positive, gushing fanboy way. I really love some Yahtzee videos but I prefer when he hates things in a very general, non-specific way. Like the Sims being evil, that's funny. Some games, games that I don't even care about/know about in the first place, get very specifically picked apart which would require more interest in the game to enjoy. But my partner watches them regularly so I stay fairly current. But yea it'll probably be awhile before I play and another friend probably was a bit too detailed about the game but will probably avoid spoilers just in case. My big thing with it will be if I can handle the graphics. I still love some old games, probably with my nostalgia blanket, but I'm pretty hesitant about new games/games I never played back when they were cutting edge tech that look dated. It's why I don't think I'd ever get into Minecraft. But if it goes heavily on sale on Steam I will try and give it a fair shot, when I finish my PhD of course.
