[Coins = 83/95]

This day felt endless as he went from one end of the casino to the other and back again. Each time he seemed even a little fatigued an attendant would pop up and attempt to offer him a drink, but he was not going to fall for that bit a second time. The last thing he wanted was to have to decide between the lives of two people again as though it were some kind of sick game. He would never get over that boy, but dwelling on it at the moment wouldn’t help him get the coins he needed to leave this place behind.

Taking one of the vacant seats in front of one of the slot machines he stared at the screen and laughed. There they were, the multicolored fruits that had gotten him into this mess in the first place. In all honesty though it was not the fault of those little pixels, it was his. He never thought he would begin to miss his cell back at the prison, but he had been proven wrong more than once by this place.

Raffin had kept track of the time, trying, in his own way, to have some semblance of his sanity. It didn't matter what he was doing, he just needed to focus on the task at hand and try and let that be the main point of his day. It didn't always help - sometimes his mind refused to settle, the bright, flashing lights and the cacophony of sound driving his thoughts in a direction he didn't want them to go, back to the girl in the room.

But no, he wasn't going to think about that. He wasn't going to think about anything except trying to get out of this hellhole, and that involved doing as much as he could in terms of trying to get coins. Raffin wished dearly that it did not involve something as subjective as gambling, but at the same time, there was a certain logic that he thought, if applied, might be able to help him win.

And if not, well...then he'd cross to that bridge when he got there.

There was someone at the slot machine that Raffin vaguely recognized as from the Prison. He stepped over, a little warily, but with interest and friendliness abounding, a light, relaxed smile on his face in spite of the seriousness of their situation.

"Good evening," he said. "It's Nate, isn't it? Do you mind if I join you?"

He hadn’t been expecting company but when he heard his name from above the din of both panic and joy he felt a little relieved. At list this would keep him from delving deeper into the black pit that had begun to yawn within his mind. He needed to remain optimistic, not just for himself but for the others in the room who were suffering in the exact same way that he was. As he looked up to pinpoint the source he was met with a smiling face, one that he was easily able to return.

“Hey,” he responded whilst motioning to the chair beside him, “not at all, come stare at the fruit with me.” He chuckled. “Correct! You’ll have to forgive me though, I’m not sure I’m familiar with your name.” His embarrassment was obvious as he looked at the young man. Now more than ever he was beginning to regret his decision to hide himself away in that blasted cell for so long. He could have at least tried to make a few friends.

"That's all right," said Raffin, with a little smile, dragging a stool over. "I'm not exactly...well, let's just say I haven't really been all that outgoing for the past little while, unfortunately. It's all been a little overwhelming, wouldn't you say?"

He eased down and drew his knees up, laughing. "My name's Raffin, or Dr. Lambington, whichever is preferable. I was - am - a psychologist, which hopefully doesn't put you off."

Raffin rested his elbow on his knee, chin in his hands.

"What are you doing, if you don't mind me asking?"

As his would be companion drew nearer he got a better look at his face and realized that he couldn’t be much older than himself. How funny it was to be two twenty-somethings faced with such a harsh reality, and he had been told this would be his prime. He laughed openly when Raffin mentioned everything being overwhelming. “Well, now that you mention it.” He said with a smile. It was funny how many others he had met who had kept to themselves; it all must have been a great deal to take in for everyone which made it easily understandable. “Seems like we all needed a little time to ourselves after the ordeal.” He assured.

“I won’t hold that against you,” Nate dismissed it with a wave of his hand, “besides between you and me Doc, I think a lot of people will need the help you can provide.” Heaven knew he would require extensive therapy after all of this. At the doctors question he gave him a playfully skeptical look. “Are you going all shrink on me Dr. Lambington?” After quirking a brow he looked once more at the slot machine.

“I guess I am just wondering how all of us managed to get into this situation.” He responded, tugging at the ever annoying collar.

Raffin appreciated the lightheartedness of the other man; it was never so easy to put things aside and remain in good spirits. It wasn't necessarily being overly optimistic, not really - they were all aware of how firmly stuck they were here unless they managed to do something about it - but it was still being positive and encouraging.

He tapped his fingers idly against his knee. "Not sure how many people would be willing to talk to me," said Raffin with a smile, and then he laughed again. "No, not all shrinky on you, not unless you really need to discuss something. My work lies mainly in observation as it is, however, I have taken on clients in the past who have needed to talk."

His eyes flickered towards the slot machine, watching the colors whistle past but without really seeing them. It felt almost surreal to be sitting here - but at the same time, it felt like they'd been at this for so long that it was second nature by now. Raffin dragged in a breath.

"I've wondered that for a while now," he said ruefully. "What would you do, if you got out of here?"

“You’re a nice enough guy Doc!” Clapping his hand on the shoulder of the other he shrugged. “I don’t see why they wouldn’t. I mean, at least you can relate to what they are going through.” He thought about the many times various boots had been sent to the counselor’s office for some much needed straightening out. Sometimes it was something as small as the pressure getting to them, and other times it was much larger. He could appreciate the good doctor’s work, especially after something as disturbing as all of this.

He remained quiet for a moment as he mulled over the doctor’s question. What would he do? “Well, first I would probably stop by your office. After today I am going to need some serious help.” Crossing his arms he shook his head. He could make all of this jokes he wanted to, but the fact that this day would forever remain with him was still quite serious. “I guess I would try to go on surviving until the very end…but to what end I’m not even sure.”

Placing his elbows on his knees he leaned forward and took a deep breath. “Did they make you choose too?” He wasn’t sure if the question would make sense to Raffin, but he had to ask. Had everyone who had come out here been forced to choose who to save and who to let die in that little room? He hadn’t asked anyone else for fear of making them panic, but Raffin seemed a more appropriate person to talk with about it.

He did like the idea of possibly talking to some of the others about their possible issues - but at the same time, he couldn't force them to talk to him. People always pushed aside their feelings for other things in times like these, after all, as much as Raffin regretted it.

He gave Nate an appreciative smile, however. "Thanks for saying that," he said with a laugh. "I appreciate your confidence in my abilities, even if I'm not even certain of them myself."

Raffin listened while the young man spoke, idly tapping a finger against his knee. There was really no one for him to talk to - Raffin was the one who had people come to him, not the other way around, but he had never minded this before. He thought of it now, strangely, wondering if after they got out he'd be able to find someone else to talk to.

"Survival is good," said Raffin, with a wan smile, but it faded a little at Nate's next question. Nausea immediately rose in his throat at the memory, his face paling somewhat just out of instinct, but Raffin tamped down on it. Professionalism was important, after all.

"Yes," he said quietly. "Yes, they did. I assume by your question that it was how you woke up as well?"

It was relatively humorous listening to Raffin doubt his abilities, only because Nate had done that himself thousands of time during his Academy days. Each time they did target practice he questioned whether or not he actually had the ability to shoot someone should the need arise, if he was capable of taking a life in order to serve the greater good. He often wondered if he would balk in a difficult situation, or if he could manage to hold himself together in order to do what was right. Little did he know he would be tested far earlier and much more severely than he had ever imagined. Nothing quite said crash course like a zombie apocalypse. “If it’s any consolation, I’m already feeling better than I did when this conversation first started.” Nate was never really a secretive person he had always preferred to lay it all out on the table, but there was something in Raffin’s nature that allowed him to feel even more at ease when speaking freely.

He had been watching the doctor’s face after having asked his question, so when his expression fell Nate caught the smallest glimpse of it. How could it not if he had also gone through that? Still, it brought an interesting thought to his mind. Who did Raffin have? He was the psychologist, the one to sort out everyone else’s feelings and listen to their problems. Who listened to his? He couldn’t be expected to be the rock forever could he? Every person had their breaking point. For a moment he considered asking, but with the worry of coming off as nosey or impolite he kept his mouth shut for the moment.

“If only it was a nightmare.” Nate responded to the doctor’s question. He stared at the obnoxious patterns on the carpet beneath him, allowing his mind to go to a different place in time. The time when he sat there, bound to a chair and played God for a brief moment. “I don’t know if you know this about me or not, but I came to that prison after graduating from the Police Academy.” He chuckled. “I wanted to ask my uncle for some tips on how to handle the rabble.” The scene of his uncle’s gruesome death meshed with the terrified look on that boy’s face as he attempted to fight to escape. “I knew I would be faced with situations like that as a cop, but I guess you never truly know the impact until it hits you square in the chest.” He finished with a laugh, attempting to lighten the mood.

Shaking his head he looked from the floor to Raffin and rolled his eyes. “Sorry. How about you? Are you alright?”
