Well, first things first, you gotta know what you want to learn. ^^ Do you prefer Kicking and want to work on it? Or maybe you're more of a puncher and want to get into Boxing. Perhaps you want a balance and want to try both? Then you have to look into the mentality; Are you someone who more just wants to fight to fight, or do you want to also learn a philosophical approach? Maybe you're a wrestler and like to tackle things down, or maye you like to evade things and use the other person's wait again'st them. Then there's scrapping the hand to hand combat all together and learning weapons. It's endless!

I myself actually took up Karate because it was the only thing there at the time. ^^ But I fell in love with it even when other MA's like Judo, Aikido and Boxing came along. Not to say that other martial arts are not good, because they are! I had so much fun in Judo when I use to practice it. It's just for me... Karate is my home. It's the one that really makes me feel good inside. Hopefully, you'll find your style too!

My dad's a karate man, my brother's a karate man, I'm a karate man. It's my family business.

In picking a school, I recommend watching a class first and seeing if they offer a trial class for you to get your feet wet. Look for an instructor that is patient and talk to people in the class. Beware of contracts. You don't want to try it and find out it's not for you and still have to pay for six months of lessons.

if you want kung fu movie action try wushu or kung fu and if you are tall and lean-limbered then try a northern style of kung fu (fancy foot work with alot of cool kicks and stuff )like long fist or praying mantis etc. or if your short and stubbed then go for southern kung fu (70% hands over kicks) like wing chun or hung gar etc. there is a kung fu saying

"southern hands, northern feet"

go kung fu wooooooo

I would say watch the classes at all the schools talk to the teacher and research the style than choose which one you like most also talk to some of the students that have been there a wile some of them may be like you and can help.

I know so many families like that in my style. XD I'm like, the only one who doesn't come from a Karate family. ^^;;

However... the nephews are getting older... **Evil Laugh** I've actually convinced my sister to put them into Karate when they are capable of that kind of stuff. Of course, I can only hope that they like doing that kind of stuff. ^^;; My eldest nephew does like to kick things though... so Karate, or soccar for him!

My oldest nephew realy likes me and he started watching me use my kung fu I walk around my house useing it from time to time when im bored. So he starts yelling kung fu and throws these hilarious kicks and punches at me and I just dodge him its great. I have weapons all over my room and my brothers new wife dosen't like him to be around them but I have made shure he knows that he can't tuch them unless I am around soon I plan to teach him how to shoot I think all kids should know these things it teaches respect and proper safety for these tools. I hope he gets into martial arts when he is a little older my family just don't know if they can handle another like me.
No one other than me in my family has realy traind in any thing like karate or kung fu my cousins wrestle but thats it.

Everyone's giving such good advice, I'll just put up my vain, biographical infodump.

I did Taekwondo for 4 years when I was younger, because my parents felt that I needed to be good at something that my sister wasn't. I found out later that she wanted to do it and they wouldn't let her. At the end of that tenure, I had gotten my a$$ kicked, and my parents decided that was the excuse they needed to get me out of it. I was 12 when that happened.

In college, I met a guy who taught me some Tien Shan Pai, which was just my speed at the time, and I took a self-defense class. I came to adore the system and the teacher and sought the teacher out after I graduated. He is my sensei to this day. I hope to pass what he taught me on to my son.

I took some time off from my current system to take wushu, which was fun. I plan on going back for cross-training purposes, but I'm ultimately a Chin-jutsu student.

When my son was a new-born, he'd naturally reach for the throat of anyone who was holding him. Now he yells "Do Kung fu! HUP!" and does good punches. Then he yells "KICK!", and he does a good side kick. His balance is good, and he's slowly learning how to parry. He's also a mean hand with a plastic lightsaber, and is viscious with toy swords.

heart heart heart

I love my son. xd
