The day was grinding slowly along. The twenty turn old sighed as he walked along the familiar path. He felt like he'd made these trips a thousand times already and honestly it was weighing on him. He tried to remain positive, seeking out Naressa's kind words in his head as he walked. There's a chance I could still be picked by one of the hatchlings. There is a chance. Dazarec thought as he continued towards the weyrling barracks. He had a delivery for the Weyrling Master, though, he wasn't sure if his arrival was opportune. He'd ran the whole way to the barracks.

Peeking in, the only soul he spotted was J'nes; the assistant. Blinking with a frown, Dazarec walked forward. "Hullo, J'nes." He greeted and pulled the package free giving it a little twist in the air. "Delivery."

Sorry for the delay! Been busy lately.

J'nes was sitting in the Weyrlingmaster's office, going over some paperwork. Now that the eggs were laid, they could see how many hatchlings there would be, and therefore how many weyrlings would soon be needing lodgings and supplies. In the interest of being prepared for his soon-to-be charges, J'nes was making sure there were enough barracks ready and supplies set aside.

He was interrupted by a shadow across the doorway, followed by a voice. He looked up and smiled at the young man who had just entered the office. He'd been watching the Candidates long enough that he didn't need the Candidate knots at the young man's shoulder to recognize him. He'd been Standing for quite some time now, after all. If J'nes remembered right, this could even be his last chance to Impress.

"Thank you, Dazarec," he said, holding out his hand for the package. "Is that for me, or the Weyrlingmaster, or one of the other Assistants?"

Dazarec's lips pursed a little at the question, he'd completely forgotten who the package was for. Glancing down at the sheet of paper atop the package he smiled nervously, "That'd be the 'Master, sir." The candidate said as he handed the package over. He was nervous, and it showed. But what was more troubling was that there was this unsettled look in his eyes.

Over the years he'd watched the Weyrlingmasters, Assistants, and the Weyrlings all move about their business. Honestly, he'd longed to join them for so long. And it was true, this was his last chance. Swallowing hard, the young man blinked his eyes, "Busy time." Dazarec chuckled anxiously, nodding towards the paperwork. Eggs had indeed been lain, though Dazarec knew from experience that just because there were eggs didn't mean every little one would find their forever bonded. It was sad when a dragonet betweened forever. But, it happened sometimes.

J'nes took the package and set it on the desk, telling Dazarec, "Thank you, I'll make sure it gets to him." But his attention was only on the package for a moment. It was quite clear from the look in Dazarec's eyes and the tone of his voice that he was unhappy. The way he glanced at J'nes's paperwork suggested a reason. He may not be one of J'nes's charges (yet, if all went well for him), but the rider would never turn away from a youngster who needed help.

"Not too busy yet," he assured the young man. He matched his words with a reassuring smile as he pushed the papers aside so he could give the Candidate his full attention. "Most of our work is done, and it's just a matter of double-checking. But how are you? You seem a bit upset. Is there anything you'd like to talk about?"

The balding young man looked down at his feet for a moment and frowned as J'nes asked him about his concerns. If there was anything he wished to discuss with the Assistant Weyrlingmaster. Sighing softly, he returned his gaze to the man before him and swallowed, "Nervous, sir." His rapid rate of talking was difficult to adhere to when he spoke so hesitantly, so softly. Shaking his head, he slowed his speech slightly and repeated his words.

Maintaining his usual short, chopped sentences he continued, "The hatchin', sir. I feel lost." The candidate shrugged his shoulders and held his hands up in defense. He couldn't help himself, it was horrible. He felt as though he were useless in Trine Weyr. The only option would be to return home with his head down and face the look of shame on his parents' faces. It wasn't like he'd been really working on having marks this entire time, he had no skill thanks to not having been allowed to become an apprentice in a craft. He was useless. "I'm worried, sir."

J'nes gave a small nod. That was pretty much what he'd expected the reason to be. It was a common concern for any Candidate, moreso for those who'd Stood multiple times, and most of all for those nearing the cut-off age.

"That's understandable," he said gently. "You've been a Candidate at quite a few Hatchings now, haven't you?" He elected not to mention the young man's age and instead smiled again. "No need to give up hope, though. I myself stood for years before my Hatteth found me. And records have shown plenty of times when Candidates in their last year successfully Impressed. The right dragon for you may just not have been hatched yet." As much as he would have liked to assure the young man that this time would be different, there was really no way to know. Nobody had even been able to figure out why one person Impressed and another didn't, not even the Search dragons who could seek out people with the potential.

J'nes spoke the same words that Naressa had; though after so many turns of standing he wasn't entirely certain he believed them. "Yessir. I was a candidate in Benden, too." Dazarec said nervously, nodding his head slowly. He'd been a candidate for quite some time, having been searched from Benden and coming to Trine only after Keller died. Sighing, the man looked up at the ceiling briefly, "Really?" It surprised him that J'nes had stood several times before Hatteth found him. It was amazing to think that perhaps there was a chance.

He bit into his cheek slowly, gnawing on the flesh until he tasted blood. He didn't know if this one would be different. He was beginning to feel like he'd never soar through the air on the back of a dragon. "It's a weird clutch, sir." The balding twenty-turn old frowned, biting his lip carefully. Maybe his turn would come with this clutch.

J'nes chuckled at Dazarec's comment. "It certainly is a strange one. I think whatever comes out of those eggs will be a surprise to everyone," he said. He hoped that could offer some bit of hope to the young man, even if it was a more roundabout form of encouragement.

Was there anything else beyond the conventional wisdom that he could say to help ease the young man's nerves? He decided to stick with talking about the clutch for now, and continued, "The only way to tell them apart is by size. And the hints of personality you feel through the shells, perhaps. Not that anyone but their mother and the Candidates can get close enough to find those out," he added with a grin. "I always thought the Touching was one of the most interesting parts of being a Candidate, and with far less potential for danger than the Hatching."
