"Unfortunately I am," she said with a laugh. "Would certainly make my life easier if I wasn't but gotta do things the hard way sometimes." And if that meant being scared for a little while longer then she could (hopefully) manage with that. Might end up with a few gray hairs along the way, but she would survive.
The change in subject and her newfound resolve lightened her mood somewhat, and she nodded along with Zeke's suggestions, briefly trying to think of what a Raevan would look like with the suggested souls. Not that she necessarily had much of an idea of how the soul and essence affected their appearance, only having seen Raevans mostly at a distance up until now.
"Do most people know what kind of soul they want going in to this?" There was just so many things you could go for, if all you were limited to was a color or two! And brown probably didn't have as many options out there as some other colors had, either. Maybe she should just throw it at something until a soul stuck to it. Then it'd be a surprise as well.

"Well if you ever change your mind, the offer stands." But until that point - if it ever came to it that is - he was fine with closing that particular door. The change in conversation was a breath of fresh air and Zeke was all too happy to answer anything she had in regards to the second half of what would go into her future Raevan.
"Some do! But you'll probably be surprised to hear that most captures are accidents or spur of the moment." He puffed out his chest as he spoke, thumbing at himself to add to the fact that he was one among that particular rank. "My Raevan's soul capture was unintentional, but came with the added benefit of being utterly hilarious." The silly grin returned as fond memories were brought to the forefront of his mind. "If you ask any Guardian how theirs happened, you'll find that practically all of them did not intend to capture the soul they did. Some might have been in the right place at the right time and captured a soul because the creature or thing they captured was dying or freshly dead. Others might tell you that they put the Glass down one night and in the morning there was a soul inside because their houseplant was on the same table or an animal passed close to it in the night."
Or, in his case, a wayward spider fell down onto the wrong shoulder at the wrong time in front of the wrong arachnophobe.
"That's something I should warn you about - the Soul Glass doesn't pick and choose. If the thing has a soul that matches one or all of the colors on the cloth, it'll activate and draw the soul in. So like right now, if you leave the bottle lying around outside, you might find it later with a dead beetle nearby or something. To keep that from happening the best course of action is to leave it in the case or your bag when you're not out hunting, okay?"

Well, perhaps one day it will all become too much for her, but for now she was still stubborn enough to keep on trudging on through all of this for the most part. It was a relief to hear that she wasn't alone in her inability to pick a suitable soul, she had been worrying that it was something she should at least have some idea about, but hearing that most of the guardians ended up with their soul accidentally or without planning put her mind at ease as far as that was concerned.
"Well, I've mostly been keeping it at home, don't want to accidentally break it, but there isn't really anything there so not much of a chance of that," she said with a sigh. Might be easier if it happened accidentally rather than trying to overthink it and end up spending forever trying to find the right soul. Maybe just throwing it at things until something sticks would be the best way to go about it.
"Oh well, I'm sure inspiration will strike eventually." This is really bad foreshadowing. "Though I'm sure it'll be a surprise to everyone," she said with a weak laugh. This whole situation was a giant surprise, why shouldn't the rest of it be one as well?

"Break it? You don't have to worry about that!" Zeke picked up the Soul Glass and rapped his knuckles upon its bulbous bottom. It rang with the sort of sound that something made when it was particularly dense and hollow. "These babies are built to last! You could hit it with a truck and I doubt you'd be able to crack it!"
His eyes twinkled with good humor as he set the glass down although his expression softened at Nell's clearly bummed out look.
"No need to sweat timing either, be it catching a soul or getting these two back to the Lab. Some captures happen the day after a Guardian gets their tools. Others take a few weeks, maybe even a couple months. Hell, even on that odd blue moon one person might even take a whole year to get back to us! You're not on any sort of time limit here so don't feel bad if you take awhile to catch anything, okay? Though if you're closing in on that year mark it'd be great if you could give us a call so we know you're still kicking."
He smiled at her, hoping that would boost her spirits. She had all the time in the world that she needed, should she require it that is. For all they knew, Nell would leave here and later tonight she would have a soul captured and ready to be shipped back to Lab tomorrow morning. Funny how things like that worked.
"Of course, if you still find yourself stuck, any one of the Guardians would be more than happy to lend a hand or offer some advice." He gestured to himself, he counted among that number in all aspects. "In fact lemme ask you this: have you considered a potential soul as being something you like? Maybe a certain kind of plant or stone, maybe?" Sometimes simplifying things down to basic concepts was enough to get the metaphorical ball rolling.

There was a brief, relieved laugh at hearing how sturdy they were, a worry that had been nagging at her for the past few weeks. She wasn't rough with things intentionally, but she definitely was a bit rougher on things than some people. And with knowing that, she felt a bit better carrying it around with her more often, hopefully increasing the chance of running into a fitting soul.
"Well, that's good to know. I would hope it doesn't take me that long to figure something out, though!" It was quite the conundrum, but she hoped she would figure it out by then. And if not, she might just try the 'throw it at things until something sticks' method. Not the best option out there, though the surprise would certainly be interesting.
"Yeah, I keep meaning to drop people a message from the list, but," she gestured at the items in front of her. 'Had my hands full, y'know? And I'm not much of an expert on it, but brown never seemed like a promising color for plants. Stones might work, though." She looked down at the bag in front of her, prodding the jar that was in it partially out onto the tabletop so the stone inside it could be seen. "There are some good brown stones out there."

"Even if it takes you a year, there's no rush! Just be sure to let us know if you need a hand or are closing in on that year mark if you end up there like I said." With that, he finished off the last of his drink. "And, of course, when you do catch a soul. I'm always excited to find out what people have caught!"
It was fun to theorize just what a Raevan would look like when you put the newly captured soul and the long-waiting Essence together. He did it with every pair to be returned ever since he started his job with the Lab and sometimes, he would be proud to say if asked, his guesses weren't off the mark.
"Understandable! If you aren't able to find the time to call anyone, we do have yearly get-togethers for everyone to meet up and mingle. Every Guardian gets an invite so you're already on all the lists!" If they had another this year, it would be a toss up between Christmas and Halloween. When he got back to the Lab he'd have to poke his head into Kyou's office and see if the boss man had any ideas or inclinations for either holiday.
With the mention of stones Zeke nodded but couldn't keep the curiosity out of his face.
"We do lack in Raevans with souls of stones and minerals, so that's a largely untapped avenue if you wanted to go down it! Keep in mind though: they have to be raw. Nothing cut or polished." He touched his right hand where a couple of the rings he wore had stones set into them. Pretty to look at to be sure, but unusable when it came to Raevan-making. "When you get home, look up Doucette Delacey on your contact list. Her Raevan Revontulet has a moonstone for her soul and if you want pointers there, I'm sure she'd be able to give them to you."

"You'll be the first to know when I capture something!" One way or another, at least. If he ended up telling her any theories about their possible appearance she would likely never stop bugging him about it until they were ready to come home.
"Oh, that's good to know. I kinda wish now that I was able to meet more people at the tea party, but," she trailed off with a shrug. "Always time for that now, I guess!" If she had known that she would rather suddenly be a part of that community she might have made a bit more of an effort to talk to a few more people.
"Doucette...okay. I have a pretty sizable stone collection, actually. Not sure if I have any that would work for it, but it's a start! Thanks for all your help with this, Zeke, I really appreciate it." She felt somewhat less like a chicken with it's head cut off now, she was still a bit overwhelmed by all of the choices she could possibly make, but she at least had a vague direction to go in now.

"Excellent!" He grinned wide, giddy all over again. "Well don't worry, like I said you're on every invite list we have so you're a shoe-in!"
And even if there wasn't a party until next year for one reason or another, Guardians and their Raevans still had ways of popping out of the woodwork even when the contact list wasn't consulted. In fact...
"If you'd like to meet a Raevan, we can try setting something up where you can meet my girl." Summer would be drawing to a close soon and Anya would be forced to remain largely indoors during the later fall and winter months. Zeke felt she would enjoy a few day trips to really soak up the sun before then and meeting a new face or two along the way. "If you'd like to, that is!" He didn't want to presume and Nell was certain to have a lot on her plate going forward from here with capturing a soul for her rowdy Essence.
"I'm always happy to help." He bobbed his head in a nod at the thanks. "And hey, if you still need a hand when it comes to literal soul-searching I'm just a phone call away."
Now it sort of felt like their time together was drawing toward a close but, Zeke being Zeke, he wasn't about to let Nell go without offering once more:
"That being said; do you have anything more to ask me? I've got all the time in the world if you do!"

Well, that was certainly one less worry she'd have to think about, auto-invites were certainly nice. Even if it was in a few months or next year, it was certainly good to know that she was automatically involved with something other than work. The mention of setting up a meeting with his own Raevan lit her face up with an excited smile.
"Really?" Well! That'd certainly be something, she hadn't had much of a chance to personally interact with any of the Raevans up until now, and maybe she'd be able to meet some potential friends for hers! "That would be amazing! What's she...is it rude to ask what they're made of?" It did seem like a rater invasive question to her, but who knows, the etiquette surrounding Raevans was something of a mystery to her for now.
"Aaah, nothing else comes to mind right now, but I'll drop you a line if something else comes up!" Undoubtedly some questions will come to mind once she didn't have to deal with the side-effects of her essence. "Thanks again for taking the time to see me, I really appreciate it. THis is all really....a lot to take in at once." To put it mildly.

"Yeah really! I just hope you aren't arachnophobic - Anastacia's soul is a black widow spider. Her Essence is called the Self-Replicating Virus."
Zeke was hardly the sort to consider another person wondering about the make up of his own Raevan as rude. It was a thing that couldn't be helped - with Raevans all being so varied and unique, it was only natural to be curious what made them up. He was more than happy to oblige Nell with a straight answer there.
"Excellent! I look forward to it!" It seemed as if their time together was indeed coming to a close. "Even if you don't have a question, feel free to call me. We can set something up for you to meet Anya!"
Zeke stood then in order to better offer Nell his hand to shake. They hadn't spent long together but good feelings were abound about Nell and the pick that led her to be a Guardian. She was sensible and had a good head on her shoulders; pleasant and charming. He couldn't wait to see what she would capture to pair with the Essence that he was now wondering would produce an equally overactive Raevan. Time would tell. They were both going to have to wait and see.

"Spiders and I generally get along ok! Not too fond of finding them in my shoes, but I don't think that'd be an issue with her," she said with a laugh. A self-replicating virus? "Oh wow, that sounds..." Dangerous? Deadly? Risky? "...Kind of awesome, actually."
She stood up with Zeke, returning his handshake with a smile. "Yeah! Hopefully I'll have something to send back to the Lab soon, but I'll give you a call either way! Thanks again for taking the time to speak with me, hope I'll see you again soon!" She could only hope that whatever Raevan that was born from that Essence would be a bit more quiet than what she had seen so far,but even if not, her talk with Zeke had seemed to make her more at ease with what she had in store for her in the future.

He noted her pause.
"Don't worry; she's harmless." And he hoped that was enough without going into the whole history behind his Frei otherwise they would be doomed to this table for another half hour at least. "At least as long as you're well dressed when meeting her."
He winked at that little hint at a small part of his Frei's personality. When she took his hand, his own grip was firm but friendly.
"Excellent! I can't wait!" He was grinning ear to ear even if there was a small part of him that was sad to see a new friend have to go so soon. "And feel free to give me a call if anything comes up or you have anymore questions! It was great to meet you Nell; good luck and I'm sure we'll be seeing each other again real soon!"
