Xiu let out such nervous laughter at his words that she was immediately worried that he'd pick up on something. Following it up with a cough, she nodded at his confirmation about the cake and added that last note before finally flipping the pad closed. She was going to have a busy month ahead of her but she wouldn't have it any other way.
"Um," she started uncertainly, pressing a hand to her cheek, "I think Edel is quite a sweet ghoul to be honest, though she's also very level-headed and capable. She seems like the independent type who is always reliable when you need her, but doesn't rely on others quite as much if she can help it." There was a pause, and then Xiu cleared her throat.
"M-maybe, anyways. I mean...why do you say that you can't understand her?"Zyphiris ok but where my sparkles and roses at huh

Ivar squirmed internally at the baku's nervous bout of laughter, sensing that something was off (at his expense). There was something he was clearly not privy to, but that was not a matter he could push for. Edel would tell him what she wants to tell him.
"Hm," he all but sounded, agreeing with Xiu's assessment of the frost demon. He raised his eyebrows at the baku's follow up question, caught off guard by the request to ... elaborate.
"Ah, it's just that-" he explained himself awkwardly, "I can't get a good grasp of what she's feeling. At times I'm sure she is genuinely happy, but I can't help but notice her looks of melancholy when she's by herself." The man had began to muttered almost incoherently towards the end of his sentence. "Perhaps...it's that I don't know where its coming from..." he admitted, sounding a little stung by his own words. Almost as though he was afraid to confirm if he had a part in that.

...It was so, so tempting. Ivar had pretty much opened up the perfect opportunity to Xiu to ask him upfront about what his relationship with Edel truly was, but the question was if she really wanted to do it. The poor man just seemed so terribly confused, and he was so likable that the ghoul didn't want to prod him into what could be uncomfortable territory for him.
...But at the same time, she was dying to know. To be completely fair, she would probably be able to give him better tailored information--partly because she would no longer be distracted--if she actually knew where he stood with Edel.
So Xiu awkwardly set her hands in her lap, leaned forward, and cleared her throat. "I'm...really, really sorry, Ivar, but I just wanted to ask. You are by all means welcome to change the subject if it does make you uncomfortable, but uh..." The baku shift in her chair, wriggling for a bit before she finally looked up and focused her eyes on his.
"If I may...is your relationship with Edel purely business? Or is there more beyond formalities and friendship?"Zyphiris ok now gush, Ivar, so that we can have roses and sparkles

Ivar leaned back into his chair and breathed. "As you may know, business partnerships tend to imply a little more in demon society," he began, "Though I'd like to think we are progressive enough to agree to ignore that part of it.
A pause.
"But that...might be a little difficult for me now." he smiled weakly. Kaiyumix have some sad violin music instead.

Had he been someone she was closer to, say a friend from school, Xiu more than likely would have given him a big hug. As it was, she had to seize the edges of her chair to prevent herself from standing up and moving around to where he sat, reminding herself that hugging acquaintances, even friendly ones, was more than a little improper.
So in the end, the baku settled for letting her features soften, eyes gazing at him in sympathy. "But then...what you're ignoring is the supposed hidden deal that comes from being business partners, no? The two of you haven't agreed to the prospect of dismis]sing your own personal feelings on the matter though. Choosing for yourself and having something chosen for you is completely different!"
Her ears and tails drooped a little at his weak smile. Don't be sad, Ivar.

"Don't be sorry for me," he waved her look of sympathy off gently, "For all I know it could be harder for her." Like if she already had a lover. He shrugged, and let out a wry laugh.
The man shook his head. "Oh no, we have not agreed to anything or spoken much about that matter, though it will have to be brought up soon as we review the contract after a year. Then, at the very least, we would have a cordial discussion about it." Remaining as acquaintances would be easier to take than a broken marriage. Kaiyumi B) take in that smell of fresh pine

Even if he told her not to feel sympathy for him, it was still pretty hard. At the very least, Xiu made an effort not to show it, even if she really did feel for him and his predicament deep down. In the end, there wasn't much that she could do about it though--Edel was a dear friend and she had come to consider Ivar as something of a friend too, and this matter was solely betwee the two of them.
"I hope that your discussion goes well then," she answered carefully, the corners of her lips pulling upwards slightly, "And uh...forgive me, but..."
"...Can I give you a hug, or would that be far too awkward for you? If it's any consolation, it'd probably make me feel better." At least she had asked instead of just going with her gut instincts earlier. It was hard not to mom people--even if they were probably older than she was.

"Uhhh...." it was extremely awkward, but also so very hard to refuse. Xiu had been very endearing in the way she was trying to make him feel better, and so he would oblige, as she had said, if it would make her feel better.
The tall dark elf simply stood there stiffly and let the baku give him a hug, patting her head awkwardly in a there, there fashion.
"I'm afraid I have to leave soon, Miss Xiu, and ah- if you don't mind, please keep this a secret for me."

In the end, Xiu had to try and not laugh when she hugged Ivar, only because it reminded her a lot of hugging Shun from the way they both tensed up and stood there uncomfortably from the gesture. Deciding to be merciful, she kept it short and released him only a few seconds later.
"Ah--yes, of course! I promise that I won't tell anyone," she assured him in a firm but soft tone of voice, "And before you go...shall I go and pack up a little cake for you to bring back to Edel?"
Despite her asking it like a question, it wasn't really one. She didn't even wait for his response before going to do just that, returning a minute later with the small, ribbon-wrapped box in hand.
"I will get straight to work to plan and fulfill all your orders," Xiu added as she offered the cake to him, "Rest assured that I will make sure that they are all perfect and ready for their individual events!"

He didn't have much time to react before he found himself presented with the box of cake.
"Thank you, Miss Xiu," he smiled. For both the cake and the uh, encouragement. "I will see you soon then." Giving her a small bow, the man picked up his coat and umbrella and exited the cafe door.
Minutes later, Xiu would receive a text.
Text to Xiu:
Quote: Xiu, I'm so sorry for such short notice, but could you recommend me some cakes?
Quote: Alcoholic cakes? Or those that would go along well with wine after a meal? Honestly, I have no idea. Just something appropriate for an occasion of sorts.
Quote: I'll swing by the cafe soon, see you and thank you!
