It was a fairly beautiful day out - sure there were some clouds off in the distance but Aerith didn't think they would turn into anything unpleasant and Mercy was inclined to agree with her. The pair had decided to take advantage of the nice weather with a bit of a joy ride. It had been nice to just fly with no real goal in mind, a bit of a break from the responsibilities and everyday work of the Weyr and something that they didn't get to do nearly as often as they would like.
Of course upon return there had been work to do and so, while Aerith curled up in her wallow to doze and keep her rider company, Mercy set about cleaning her riding gear outside her hut, working over the leather and hide straps with old familiarity as she enjoyed the sun and nice weather alongside her dragon.
'We should try and do that more often' Aerith remarked, cracking open one swirling blue eye to regard her rider.
'We should.' Mercy agreed 'It won't be long before there is another clutch on the sands and more students to teach, we should take advantage of the down time while we can.'
'Well that's the truth, if there's one thing we can rely on around here its the endless cycle of clutches now isn't it.' The white replied with a bit of an amused snort.
"Oh hush, I know you like the babies as much as I do" Mercy teased her dragon, snapping a towel in her direction with a teasing smile.

Stop picking at your hem, Mine. You will undo it at this rate, Girofleth admonished gently as she walked beside her rider down the lines of weyrs, looking for one that housed a very distinct dragon and her bonded.
Sorry! Iafri did as she was told, distancing her hand from the light linen shirt she had been fretting at...a distance she achieved by chewing on her fingernails instead.
You shouldn't do that, either. You've already bitten them back far enough.
Sorry. The second apology was reflex and sullen, and she dropped her hand to her side, fingers curling and uncurling. Nervous habits were the hardest to break, if not downright impossible, and she needed to do something with her hands!
The petite green sighed. Pick at your shirt, then, if you must do something of the kind.
Once given permission, Iafri brightened immediately, returning to running the hem of her shirt under her fingernails, short as they were. It didn't make her not nervous, but it at least made her feel a little better. Have you told Aerith we're coming? I don't want to just drop in on them, they might be busy, or they might not want to see us, or-
Hush, I'm sure they will be happy to see us. I know I always enjoy seeing Aerith, it is good to be with someone my own size! While Girofleth was not in any way bothered by her small size, it was nice that there was one dragon in the Weyr she didn't have to literally look up to. And of course, Aerith herself was quite a pleasant dragon, which was the more important but less amusing reason the green liked her so much. Aerith, would you and Yours have time to speak with me and Mine?

'Maybe' Aerith replied to her rider, on the verge of issuing another teasing remark in return before mentally pausing in their conversation so that she could respond to Girofleth. 'Of course Girofleth, we are just sitting outside enjoying the weather, company would be quite pleasant.' Aerith replied warmly before switching their attention back to Mercy.
'Girofleth and theirs would like to come and speak with us.' Aerith shared with Mercy.
'Oh? Well did you tell them to come on over?' Mercy asked, a bit of curiosity in her tone. It had been a little while since she had seen the pair but that wasn't entirely surprising given Iafri's meeker nature.
'Of course I did' Aerith replied, stretching and resettling her wings as Mercy continued on with cleaning her riding gear as they waited.

Aerith says that company would be pleasant, Girofleth assured her rider before responding, It is a lovely day indeed. We will be along shortly.
You're sure she's not just saying that?
Of course I'm sure, MyHeart! We may not be Weyrlings anymore, but I do not think they mind.
If you say so. Though doubt was a part of her nature she could never really escape, she was inclined to agree with her dragon on this. Aerith and her rider had always been kind and patient with them while they learned - and they had had a lot to learn!
In a matter of minutes, the two had come into view of the white in her wallow, and Girofleth bugled a happy greeting. You look well, Aerith. I trust that you are?
Iafri shuffled her feet beside Girofleth until the green gently nosed her away, at which point she dipped her head politely and offered a faint smile. "Hello, Mercy. Aerith. We aren't bothering you, are we?"
Her partner sighed. It was better than cowering behind her and not speaking, though! At least they were long past that.

'Quite well, me and mine enjoyed a rather nice flight earlier, a bit of relaxation is good for everyone now and then I think.' Aerith replied to the small green. 'And you? How are you and yours?' The white asked with a sincere tone. Like their rider Aerith found themselves rather curious about why the pair decided to come and visit but she was patient and she could wait until they decided to reveal it on their own.
Setting her riding gear aside Mercy smiled at the pair as they arrived. "Of course not! Iafri, Girofleth, your always welcome, Aerith and I never mind a bit of company." She assured the pair before motioning to one of the chairs beside her "Please sit, I think I have some juice or water in the hut if you'd like something to drink" She offered

It is a good day for flying. Even drills are enjoyable when the day is fair. Girofleth sat daintily, tail curling around her legs. We are well. Things seem to be getting better every day, and I hope that it continues.
Iafri's smile got a little brighter, and after a brief pause of hesitation and a mental nudge from her bonded, she sat in the chair that Mercy had indicating. The answer to ther other rider's question was a slight shake of her head, accompanied by a quiet, "I'm alright. Thank you, though."
Looking down at her hands, she wove and twisted her fingers together, a focus for an anxious mind while she re-gathered thoughts that had flown as soon as she needed them, like always. She had rehearsed versions of this conversation over and over ever since she and Girofleth had decided they should have it, but of course they had all gone right out of her head as soon as she was actually face to face with the Assistant Weyrlingmaster. "We were, mm..." The greenrider was turns past when she would freeze in terror, but pauses, mm, and umms, were still in ready supply. "We were, actually, we were wondering, how- how did you decide what to do? I mean, be Weyrlingmasters?"
That was very good, Mine, Girofleth encouraged.

Aerith rumbled in agreement with the green's comments 'Very true, a fair day makes most chores just a little bit more agreeable. It is good to hear that you are both well, yours seemed so worried that I was afraid something might be wrong.' The white admit with a flick of their tail. But that was typical of people in general Aerith had found - quite often they fret and agonized over things that dragons simply didn't find quite so burdensome.
Mercy merely nodded at the riders choice to refrain from refreshments and waited patiently for her to continue on with why she had come to visit, it was unlikely this was a simple social call - while Mercy enjoyed good relations with most of her past students, there were very few who stopped by simply for the sake of stopping by. Of course when Iafri got her question out Mercy wasn't entirely surprised - it was a bit harder now, she supposed, to find your place in the world what with so many options open. Before, for green riders, many of those positions had been unavailable..but now they could choose and the choosing was probably difficult for some.
"Well...it took a lot of thought." Mercy admit, pursing her lips slightly as she recalled back to those times. "And to be honest we kind of floundered around for a little while Aerith and I - When you become a dragonrider you imagine yourself flying thread - helping to save the world and all of that craziness." She said with a slight laugh "But..that wasn't really an option for Aerith and I and we had a hard time accepting that. we wanted to help of course but with the limitations on us we just weren't sure how to go about doing that." Mercy said with a slight shrug of her shoulders, she was long past wishing she could have flown in a real wing. "Anyways after a lot of growing up and a lot of accepting ourselves for who we were we realized that everyone needs a good foundation and given Aerith's challenging hatchlinghood we were both pretty good at dealing with the problems little dragons and theirs riders might have, once we figured that out - it was a pretty obvious choice really. " She concluded with a smile

Mine is almost never not worried, Girofleth shared, slowly spreading out her wings to catch the sun. It was a fine day indeed, and there was no reason not to enjoy it. But she remembers Yours fondly from when she taught us. She was very patient. The green's own memories from that time had long since faded, but fortunately, she had her rider for such things.
Iafri listened intently to Mercy's answer, though her gaze was fixed safely off to the side. While eye contact during conversation was regarded as polite by most, she found it incredibly uncomfortable. Girofleth tried to remind her to do it anyway, sometimes, but for the most part her dragon was usually just thrilled to see her talking to someone, awkward or no. "I d-didn't want to. Fight Thread. I kind of...freaked out when they told me," she admitted with a self-deprecating smile. "I still don't like it. But...I have Girofleth, so it's okay."
Sort of. Mostly. "But. Um. She wants to do something else, too. So we've been thinking about it. A lot. I don't know, though."

'Ours can be so fretfull sometimes' Aerith commented 'They try, but they are very worrisome creatures, it is good that we are around to keep them grounded, truly I don't know how those without dragons get along' The white joked. 'But I am glad that mine helped yours during weyrlinghood, she is always happy to see our students grow and become what they were meant to be'
Mercy nodded in understanding "Well, once I saw the damage that thread can do any desires to actually fight it went out like a candle for me as well...but Girofleth is a great dragon, a greens agility is a great benefit up there in the midst of threadfall, it always seems to be the browns and bronzes who come back more injured - just to big to dodge well I guess. I can understand wanting to do more though - what were the two of you thinking of?" She asked, certainly it wouldn't be wardens..neither Iafri nor Girofleth were the violent types and with Girofleth's small size then courier was likely out as well, much as it had been for her and Aerith, still that left other options that could suit them but Mercy wanted to hear what the pair had been thinking about.
