"Boy and girl were best friends. The two of them experienced everything together. But lately, at their high school, pretty much everyone was talking about the birds and the bees. About how they'd 'gotten it in' last night, or how they'd misplaced their v-cards. The two best friends, both virgins, were sick of hearing about how everyone was having sex, and being made fun of for still being virgins. One night, the boy & girl were hanging out at one of their houses, and got onto the subject of sex and how they were still virgins. So they thought, what the hell. And they took each other's virginity. But the satisfaction of not being virgins anymore doesn't last too long, before the girl finds out she's pregnant."

You only l i v e once...xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx But if you do it right, once is enough.x

xx❀xPenelope sat on her front porch, running her hands through her damp hair. Her mother stepped past her, smiling softly and patting her head. "Have a good day at school, honey. I'll be home late tonight, so there's money on the fridge for dinner." Penelope gave a small nod accompanied by a soft smile. "Okay, mom. Have a good day," she replied, waving as she climbed into her car and drove off. Once she was gone, Penelope put her head in her hands and groaned. Oh my goodness. I feel like I'm lying to her with every word I don't say, she thought, lifting her head and giving a sigh.
xx❀xAs she waited for her best friend to arrive, the girl replayed the night before. The events had unfolded without a hitch. However... the tension in the room could've been cut with a knife. Sex. She and her best friend had had sex the night before. It was a Sunday and, well... It hadn't been planned. Everyone had been ranting and raving about it, so... The very thought of the event made heat rise to her cheeks. She was still sore, even hours later, after rest and a hot shower. Penelope wondered vaguely if he felt the same way she did... That it was a mistake? At least she'd given her virginity to someone she loved. As she continued to think about it, the brunette felt bile rise in her throat. She needed to talk to him about it. Removing her phone from her purse, she checked the time. He's not late... I'm just going insane, she said with a sigh.

When he woke that morning, he felt sore everywhere, but in a pleasant way. Shane gave a quick glance at the clock, noticing it was only a few minutes before he'd usually go pick up Penelope. Oh god, he'd be late. After last night, the last thing he wanted Penelope to worry about was him not showing up to pick her up for school. He got out of bed and dressed himself in casual wear - blue jeans and a grey Hollister shirt. He gave his hair a quick brush over, brushed his teeth, gave a few spurts of cologne, and bolted out the door, saying a quick goodbye to his father who was leaving for work.
Shane thumped his fingers on the steering wheel as he drove down the road. His mind was playing images of what he'd done last night to Penelope. He couldn't help himself but to let out a short grin, idly reminiscing in the feeling. More than half of him loved the feeling being with his best friend had given him. The other portion of him was a bit worried, and felt a little weird, for two reasons only. They weren't dating, only best friends, and had he used protection right? He chuckled a little bit at the thought of improperly using protection. He'd put the condom on, correctly, as he'd learned in sex ed class.
He didn't want to talk to everyone about how he and Penelope had given their virginity to each other, much like everyone else in school would. He felt that was a personal matter, and besides, Penelope was the closest friend he had who he would dare tell. Shane pulled into the driveway, listening to the gravel crunch under his heavy tires. He parked the car, and lightly honked the horn, smiling at the girl sitting on the porch, waiting for him. God, she looked beautiful. "Hey, Pen. Going to school today?" He called out from his open window, smirking at her.

xx❀xPenelope glanced up as she heard gravel crunch under tires. Shane pulled up in her driveway, making her give a small smile. He looked exactly the same. After a honk, the brunette rose to her feet and picked up her bag. "Just waiting for my ride," she teased back, smiling widely at him. She straightened her sweater and walked to the vehicle's passenger side, her gait somewhat awkward. The girl climbed into the vehicle. As soon as she closed the door, Penelope felt her face turn red. She glanced at Shane. With her heart fluttering in her chest, she didn't know how to feel. Everything in her body felt alight with heat and sparks, but she wasn't sure if it was a good feeling... or simply an awkward one.
xx❀xOnce Shane began to drive, Penelope pulled a lock of brown hair between her fingers, a nervous habit. She knew she needed to talk to him about. Actually, she knew she needed to say anything, really. But her mind was drawing a blank. The only things that were coming to mind would make it seem like she had a negative feeling about their... adventure. But was she feeling negatively about it? Pulling her legs against her chest, Penelope set her chin on her knees. "I think... should we talk about it?" she asked, glancing at him through a curtain of brown hair.

Shane glanced over at Penelope, watching as she enveloped the brown lock between her fingers. Hearing her question, or statement, he let out a soft huff, resuming his tapping of fingers on the wheel. They pulled up at a stop sign, and he took that chance to really look over at Penelope, noting her body language and how she seemed nervous. His body flushed with his own nervousness - and fright - that this little experience had costed him his best friend.
"Yeah, yeah. We can pull off onto Carlt Street," he spoke. Carlt Street was just a street that was a dead end - no houses or anything on the road. It was always joked about that Carlt Street was just invented to be a make-out area. Shane drove the car just a little bit and pulled the car off onto the street, parking along the side. He turned to look at her, shutting the car off. "What's on your mind?" He asked, reaching over and gently brushing her soft brown hair with the back of his hand.

xx❀xPenelope gave a small nod when he suggested Carlt Street, wrapping her arms around her legs and pulling them tight. What was she supposed to say? She'd been the one to propose talking, so she'd need to start the conversation... As Shane maneuvered his vehicle to the side of the street and switched it into park, the brunette slid her legs down and faced him. Penelope was about to speak when his hand brushed her hair from her face, making heat rush to her cheeks. She fumbled a bit, having to look away.
xx❀xOnce the girl had regained her cool, she turned back to face him. "Shane... I think last night shouldn't have happened," she told him quietly, avoiding his eyes. "I mean... I think, in a roundabout way, we were influenced by peer pressure. And I love you. I mean, you're my best friend. But... If that was going to happen between us, I wish it would've happened on our own terms. Not because we wanted to do it and get it done," she whispered, her voice breaking somewhat. She lifted her blue gaze to his face, feeling tears flood her eyes. She didn't want this to be the straw that broke the camel's back. Shane was her best friend, and they'd simply made a mistake.

Shane listened closely to her voicing her concerns. He'd moved his glance from her face back to looking straight ahead towards the empty road in front of them. There was a lone squirrel that bounced its way across the street, pausing to look at Shane's bright blue car, before disappearing into the brush. He heard the crack in her voice, and he responded to that by sighing slightly, bringing his hand up to his own hair and running his fingers through it, slowly.
"Pen," he breathed, leaning his head back against the seat and closing his eyes. He hadn't had time to prepare for this kind of talk, though he should have, knowing the kind of girl Penelope was, and how she would have been worried due to this. Out of all the words rolling through his head, he didn't want to say any words that made him seem selfish in the situation. His own cheeks flushed with a faint pink and his stomach slightly twisted, not wanting her to be upset over this whole situation. Shane turned back and looked at her, watching her cheeks turn a cherry red, turning puffy as she began to let tears flow through her eyelids. To this, he unbuckled his seat belt, chewing down on his bottom lip and reaching over to grab her hand, squeezing it gently in his. "I get what you're trying to say, believe me, I do. We probably shouldn't have done it, but we did... This might sound a little harsh, or a little selfish, but I'm really glad we did. I love you too, and I've loved you for so long, Penelope. I think doing this," He squeezed her hand a little more. "Only made our bond stronger - our relationship closer."
He gave a short smile, moving his other hand up and wiping his thumb across her warm cheek, drying up any tears that had fallen over this. He knew she was right though - they did this under bad terms. He'd seen the conversation as an opportunity to try to have her as more than a best friend, something he'd been too reluctant to ask her, just in case it stopped the friendship they knew.
