By now everyone would surely be waiting at the Terminal for him to return, but it would be a little bit before he could get there after the distance he had covered in fleeing from the unusually-persistent Septentrione. His breath was short so he took a few minutes to relax in the alley and regain strength before turning down the street...starting to recover the path that he had gone down the first time. Lifting the Crow's Feather from his ear he bit down on the end again, letting out a small breath as his feet trod over well-known ground despite the wild nature of his flight. He knew the way back. He knew the safest ways, by his estimation. He just had to watch his six and stay quie-

"I have the most loving, beautiful, understanding wife in the world...okay I said it, honey, you can stop poking me now, all right?""Shoulda known it wouldn't have been easy," the Boss scoffed as another powerful foe stood between him and the Terminal, where the people he had called together for his plans were waiting on him. It was a Mada, a demon of fire that loomed in the middle of the road and seemed intent on stopping him from reaching the point where he could at last do something about the Turnip of Doom. He was tempted to spit, but kept his Crow's Feather bit down tight as he called out his devils on either side of him, grimly accepting of the task that now lay before him. Another exhausting battle...one after another the tasks had been laid before him...he would not fail now. Not when he was so close to the end...
"I'm burning up, too," he quipped as he clenched his fist, before motioning for his devils to make their assault, "I'm not going to die here! "...I'm not simply a man who kills for no reason. Because the world is ending, I'll kill you. Because I need to find Kaori, I'll kill you. Because my time is short, I'll kill you..."It would have been repetitive at this point to say that they weren't having luck with the Trumpeter, convincing it to work with them or even listen to them for any length of time (either one), but the situation had sadly not changed since the last time they were in the clearing here. Kaori continued to appeal and consider how to appeal to the demon they all needed in order to properly fight Benetnasch, but the ex-Human Weapons Unit's Deadly Nightshade simply kept his distance from the obnoxious, skull-faced demon before its attitude convinced him to do something he would almost certainly regret in the long run. It was safer to stay near one of the paths towards the courtyard and keep an eye out for their enemy.
Eventually, it would show itself before them...and if they didn't figure out how to get this thing working before then...they were going to suffer for it. They could only stall the inevitable death approaching so long as the Void remained distant...and it wouldn't for long. "Of course! Stupid-Hina said you asked her to come, so she's at the warehouse with Kotori right now talking about the-eer...j-just shut up! I could have handled it myself, you know! You didn't have to get Hinako involved!"
"Huh...what? Why the Hell are you snapping at me?! Isn't it safer to travel together right now with Benetnasch running wild out there?"
"Well...yeah, but...! That doesn't mean I couldn't have handled it!"
"-sigh- You're right, I give up. You could have handled it alone, probably, but that was my wife...it's not about you, I just wanted every possible threat accounted for. Say Benetnasch showed up...and then another Septentrione comes out of the woodwork and attacks you? Having backup might help get her out of there alive...that's all I'm thinking about."
"Yeah...I guess so...so you're saying you think it would take TWO Septentriones to take me down?"
"Well, I wasn't...I was just..."
"Yeaaah! I knew it! I knew I liked you, Kakyo! You get me...you know I'm better than Stupid-Hina after all! I'm going back to the warehouse right now to tell her what you said and rub it in her stupid face!"

"I have the most loving, beautiful, understanding wife in the world...okay I said it, honey, you can stop poking me now, all right?"One last time.
He could no longer count the number of times that they had called out the Trumpeter to try and court its assistance in the defeat of the 7th and Final Septentrione, Benetnasch. Light has risen on the Seventh Day and now it had passed; the outskirts of the city had already been swallowed by the Void and it was certain now that in 24 hours...give or take...the world would be consumed and returned to nothing, deleted like a file from a hard drive...a memory of the Akashic Record and nothing more. Their time was too short now. In the sky above the moon and stars were barely visible through the thin haze of smog that rose out of the destruction of their unconquerable enemy and enveloped the world in that translucent veil that now hid them from the stars. And in the shadows of the streets below the brick-and-mortar towers that hemmed in the courtyard where the JPs Summoning Terminal that housed the Devil of the Day, it was almost pitch black save for the faint glow of their cell phones shimmering in the dark. There were three of them visible now: Kakyo, Rina, and Hisako. This was their last chance. Their last attempt at doing what no one who had come before them, nor they themselves could manage...call upon the devil and save their world from the annihilation of Benetnasch.
Standing before the terminal was the man in charge of the team, the Oshu City Vultures. Kakyo Kaido...his pale skin reflected the faint blue light of his computer screen and his dark hair shaded his onyx eyes from the view of the others...though he could see what was on his screen and the terminal before him through the open wisps of his bangs. And behind either shoulder were the eponymous Vultures...Rina, her amused and impish expression outlined like something out of a horror flick...intentionally, no doubt...and Hisoka, whose nonplussed expression gave little hint to how he was feeling. Their leader's eyes glanced to a nearby rooftop where the faint glint of moonlight off of a tiny, circular piece of glass gave hint to the layabout perched on his stomach there staring down at the clearing through the scope of a rifle...a thumb's up nigh-invisible in the dark but enough that the Boss knew that their time was upon them. He had researched this monster thoroughly, and he knew when it was likely to turn up in this Corridor now...he had spent the entire day learning about it, about the Terminal, getting ready for the battle that was soon to come. For the world to survive, Benetnasch had to die. For his Vultures, for his wife and his family to survive...here. Now. Kakyo and his team would have to put an end to things. It was time to put the plan into action...they had no more time. Flipping open his cell phone, he held it out towards the Terminal and the sound of a trumpet filled the streets. Over their head...the Trumpeter appeared.
"How many times has it been now? You humans are not lacking in persistence, though your hubris far outstrips it if you believe persistence will convince me...but I tire of answering your call. This will be the last...speak, and let's be done with this farce for good."
Nodding towards his two companions, the Boss spoke confidently. There was no room left for doubt.
"Trumpeter, you've told us time and time again that we are arrogant. You've told us plainly that we aren't worthy...well let us prove it, then. Win or lose, challenge us. And if we fail you, then you win. We'll go quietly into the Void or whatever else it is you think we should do."
...It was a gamble, plain and simple. Behind him, his team stood primed to face any task. Kakyo's eyes did not leave the Trumpeter for even a moment, defiant until the very end.
The Trumpeter stirred...and then, it laughed.
"Such HUUUUUUUUUUBRISSS! ...You humans...believe your potential alone can overcome any trial? You believe your free will surpasses all, do you? But do you not remember who it was who GAVE you such free will? If it be called free at all. However! You amuse me, human. And you offend me. Therefore, I will reveal to you this...there are but two methods by which I might be persuaded to play my Heavenly Horn for you, and neither have you attempted. The first, as you have failed to do, would have been to have an attractive young tech-savvy woman batter me over the head with computer hardware until I gave in via submission..."
"I TOLD YOU! I told you RIGHT FROM THE START you should have let me beat the s**t out of it!"
"Not now, Rina!"
BUT...you did not try this method, therefore, there is but one left to you. One which I believe you humans to be utterly INCAPABLE of!"
He paused, dramatically. Kakyo was not amused.
"...And that is...?"
"You must defeat me...IN A ROCK-OFF!"
...
"STARTING NOW!"
Its horn began to play a dramatic, impossibly loud tune that drowned out the sounds for a square mile! It was elegant, beautiful, and hardcore...and the Vultures behind the Boss lifted their hands to their ears in pain, struggling against the impact of the waves amidst their skulls. But the Boss stood solidly before him...even as one of his ears dripped with crimson blood...and his lips curled from a grim line of determination into a growing smirk...and deep inside of his chest there was a rumbling...no, not the low laughter that now bubbled within, but the beating of a drum...a bass...a...Taiko...drumset?
...Now, it was time to really put his plan into motion.
"Challenge Accepted."
...
And then, just when the Trumpeter's music began to reach a crescendo, the sound of drums...Taiko drums thundering loudly through the air...began to slowly overwhelm them. The pounding grew louder...harder...more and more metal...the Trumpeter's music growing softer and softer by comparison against it...before the roar of engines screaming down the streets of Oshu drowned it out entirely. Turning its head down the street in utter disbelief, the Trumpeter realized its mistake just as its defeat became whole...the moment it looked down into the distance and saw this...
The Doof Warrior Cometh
...The Trumpeter let his horn fall from his skeletal teeth in an instant, knowing that no tune he could play would ever rock as hard as the masked man riding on a dump truck full of Taiko drummers playing metal on his FIRE-SPEWING ELECTRIC GUITAR. It was utter defeat, even before the Human Revolution Faction screeched into the courtyard and set up a line of mounted weaponry on the portion of the area they had been assigned to guard.
"TASTE MY LIGHTNING, F***ERRRRS!"
...
Mino and the Human Revolution had arrived.
"You lose, Trumpeter. You didn't think we would discover your love of Rock and Roll...or that I would call in help from another faction, did you? ...I'd be lying if I said that even I had considered something like him coming along, but once I'd heard the stories about the Human Revolution Faction, I knew we would need him to win you over. You can thank Rina and Fumi's research for figuring it out..." the Boss Vulture smirked triumphantly as he moved forward towards the kiosk, leveling a withering gaze at the uppity skeleton leaving no room for wriggling out of this one. After a long, long, looong day of hard work...they finally had the last piece required to challenge Benetnasch. "When we call for you, play your trumpet to neutralize the waves that dismiss demons he sends out. That's all we need from you...got it?"
The Trumpeter sighed...he knew that he had been defeated. Mankind had proven more hardcore than he ever would have imagined.
"Very well, Humans. It seems that today...I am the one who must concede to you. I will play my trumpet once, so when you are ready, simply raise your voice to the sky and call out my name! ...Be proud, children of humanity! For it is not every day that one does best the likes of the Trumpeter by any means! Truly, you must be among the greatest that humanity-"
"Now!"
..."That humanity-"
"Do it now, Trumpeter!"
"Wait, are you saying you want..."
"What the ******** is that Bone b***h waiting for?! Play the goddamn trumpet NOW!"

"Do your people always treat you like...?"
"I'm lucky to get a word in edgewise."
"Yeah, so...play it now?"
"That's the idea."
...
Behind them, the sounds of battle were already ringing throughout the dark corridors of the city. Gunfire crackled from the rifles of Minohiko's gang; their engines roared as they backed away slowly from the approaching enemy down the road. Devils emerged from the summoning apps of both Hisako and Rina as they joined the fray from the back lines, but none yet had any effect on the encroaching cream-colored terror of their dreaded foe that had finally come.
Benetnasch was here.
And its power began to gather, a pulse ringing out that was familiar and terrifying at once! It moved down the street with a deadly finality...if it hit their demons and dismissed them, they would be useless in the fight to come! It was now or never! Eyes widened, the defenders of the courtyard braced themselves...and then...
BWOOOOOOOOOOOOONG!
...The sound of a trumpet blared! And as it hit the wave of Benetnasch the two seemed to cancel one another out; the Septentrione tried to wind up another but the melody of the Trumpeter's song kicked in and each note carried the same, residual cancelling effect as the first! Their enemy had played its trump card...and it had been neutralized! Watching from his commanding position next to the Trumpeter, the dark-haired Boss smirked and raised a hand, holding it aloft in the air for a moment before he raised one finger...a symbol?...and cast it forward towards the enemy. Now, the first stage of the battle could begin!
"Trumpeter's song is neutralizing the Dismissive Wave! Use your demons now!"
He called out, and from the rooftops surrounding the courtyard he could see the hidden forms slowly rise, their phones shimmering like hidden pools of luminous hope in the midst of the chaotic dark. And from within those lights emerged a tide of demonic allies! From shimmering blue eyes and barely-visible pink hair came devils that swooped down at the back of the Septentrione and hemmed it into the courtyard, cutting off its retreat if it got into a panic. Silver steel shimmered in the girl's other hand but she remained removed from the battle, drifting back into the shadows as her devils did the attack for her. On either side of their enemy a green-haired young man and a girl with a snow-crowned visage stood and followed suit, ensuring that the attack on the enemy was coming from all four sides...complete encirclement. Arcing streams of fire burned at the Septentrione...frosty crystals of ice tore at its body! Crackling peals of ruinous lightning struck out and ripped along its hide, and thunderous gusts of calamitous wind smashed violently against it, all cracking...shattering...tearing through an enemy that had been completely trapped within their web! Kakyo smirked as he moved forward and hopped up onto the hood of a car opposite the truck that Minohiko had ridden into the area. His hand raised into the air as Mino's did as well, two fingers extended...and as Mino moved his hand and the sea of cards parted there was suddenly a strange craft...like a car with the top removed flying a mast and a Jolly Roger?! It came crashing forward at suicidal speeds, a girl in a Captain's had gleefully cheering as the slowly-deteriorating Benetnasch appeared at last to be slowing its approach and taking significant damage.
"Arr, ha ha ha! Come on, lads! Do you want them to sing yer song 'til Judgment Day and trumpet's sound?!" a brilliantly energetic cry filled the sky amidst the bombardment...and then, without slowing even a hint, the 'Ship' struck Benetnasch in a fiery explosion that launched the girl high into the sky...but just as she began to descend a shot fired from the rooftop nearby...and a net caromed out into the sky and scooped the girl up inside before she hit the ground with a rather unceremonious splat, instead hanging her safely over the side of a building. Glancing up above the column of smoke, Kakyo nodded briskly...and from his perch up atop the city's buildings, Mo-Po gave a tiny, lazy wave of acknowledgment. Now, his attention returned to the column of smoke...which began to fade, revealing what remained of their enemy beneath. After all they had hit it with in such a short time, given the four-sided assault and the cavalry charge that had leveled Dubhe, and with its inability to mount a defense, he was certain that they had done it...at last, finally done it...
And there, the Turnip of Doom's skin appeared to be cracking...but the crack was perfect, vertical...and then a second appeared on its side...it was almost as thought it was...
"Not so fast!" a voice cried out as a fist crashed into the Bud, cracking it into pieces that exploded and burst into magnetite. The girl's violet hair flowed behind her as she slowly stood from where she had defeated the Bud...she shook her fist out as she turned her attention to the other Buds that had landed nearby, taking only a moment to glance over her shoulder at the Boss as her partner landed at her side, calling back to him sternly, "What are you just standing there for! We know we can beat them! So fight! I'll kill the Buds and protect Trumpeter...you guys finish off the slices of that thing and win!" No sooner had she called out than a sword ripped through an Alioth Spore that had been aimed at her head and reduced it to magnetite before it could land...offering a nod to her companion, Kaori Sakurazaka took him along with her and began to tear through the Buds and Spores like a Valkyrie tearing through the skies on the way to Valhalla. She was a Goddess of combat to his eyes for just a moment...but he shook away the wonder at their skill and was back focused upon the Main Event in a moment, clenching his fist as he watched Minohiko rush in and batter the nearest section...which held the sleek, colorless shape of Benetnasch still...knowing that this was it. All of the chips had been pushed towards the center of the table now.
Win or lose, it was all going to end here.
"So what if we die..." the Boss spat to the side, biting down on his Crow's Feather and walking solemnly forward towards the battle ongoing, ready to face his fate, "...From the very beginning, we were all ready to put our lives on the line! This is how we live!"
...
On the left side of the field against the slice which contained the dreaded ring of Phecda, a green-haired teen moved about the top of a building with a dancer's grace and a hummingbird's speed, flitting about smoothly away from the electrical pulses unleashed by the piece of Benetnasch nearest to him. His devils returned fire but also fell victim to attack in-turn...spinning away from an attack a large chakram ring lashed out down across the distance and cut away a slice of the enemy, earning a confident smirk. "We can hurt them easier now," he called out to the pink-haired girl fighting nearby, leaping from the edge of the building and raising his foot, bringing down a crackling heel upon the top of the Septentrione, sending a ripple of breaks and tears shredding through the enemy! "Yuno! You can handle it!" Bouncing back up into the air above the slice of their enemy, he drew back his leg for a final attack. "Satonaka Style...Galatic PUNT!" His foot connected...and with a concussive crash, his slice of the enemy was no more! "One down, guys!"

"I know, Fausty-kun. Please don't interrupt Yuno while she's working," the pink-haired girl smiled thinly at the green-haired teen that called out to her, but one look at her revealed something unusual...she was extremely close to the portion of the Septentrione, half an arm's distance away...and she was thrusting her arms violently into the enemy over and over and over, "You're trying to destroy the world, and Yuno can't have that. Rednal lives in this world. If the world dies, Rendal will die. So Yuno has to make you die instead. So die..." Her eyes were wide, unblinking, as purple blood splattered over her face again and again and again and again and again and again...there must have been dozens...no...hundreds of stab-wounds already building up along the underside of the Septentrione! Her demons attacked with impunity, unhindered by direction or restraint of their master, and their master attacked, bereft of any real sanity that remained within her. From her position it was impossible for the Merak Slice of Benetnasch to use its disintegrating laser, but spell after spell tried to strike her anyway...one of which hit the back of her head and split open a cut there...blood trickling down to mingle in an ugly fashion with its own upon her face. And yet she paid it no mind...not even a moment...simply stabbing...stabbing...stabbing over and over and over. "DiediedieDIEdiedieDIEDIEDIEdiedie...won't you die for me?"
...The sounds of steel plunking deep into Septentrione flesh over and over resounded throughout the area, until at last the enemy began to wilt...and then, cracking into particles, it slowly slumped over...disintegrating into magnetite and nothing.
Two were gone.
...
It wasn't fair that she had been paired up with the slice that was throwing out Buds of Megrez! And Alioth! And...it just kept throwing them at her! Her sword skills, honed thankfully through the months of fighting with the members of the Investigation Team had allowed her to cut down a number of them, but she wasn't making any progress in getting closer! She needed to find an opening, or create one with her devils that she could exploit. Another Alioth Spore...she stepped aside and whipped her blade through the center, scattering it before it could disperse into deadly toxins. Extending a hand as she rolled, Nix sent out her demon to strike at the slice of Benetnasch but it wasn't enough! She avoided a Megrez Bud only to have it attempt to explode on her, moments before...however...her demon dived onto it and absorbed the attack for her, dispersing from her summons. Why did she get the one with projectiles, anyway? She was used to fighting the likes of Sano and others who tended to want to attack her up close. This was...different. But she wasn't the same girl she had been before the power had come to her...she had grown! Nix Gallen...was strong! And she would not let her world be destroyed, ruined, or perverted if she could stop it. Never again...!
"I won't lose to you," she ground out deciding at last to make an all-or-nothing charge. If she didn't strike it down now, it might hurt someone else...it might kill someone! Pulling her sword down to her side she whispered a small prayer and hoped that someone out there was listening, charging forward...just as a Bud shot forward she cut it down...and twisted away from the residue, her devils striking the ground in front of her to create a smokescreen for her attack! This time...she was going for a complete victory! "I'll stop you here!" Her sword thrust forward and found its mark deep in enemy flesh...and as she twisted the blade her devils bore down on the slice of Benetnasch from behind, bombarding it with attacks that exploded tremendously on impact. And through her blade she could hear the rumbling...the cracking...until at last, she felt nothing, blue mist drifting up into the sky with the dust from her diversion. Magnetite...it seemed her enemy, at last, was defeated. "Phew...it's over..."
...Three down, one to go...
"Seventy-three! Seventy-four!" "Sixty-nine! Seventy! ...You skipped a few, a*****e!"
"Shut up! I just didn't count some earlier!"
"Seventy-five, seventy-six!"
"Stop distracting me, you pale b*****d!"
...The final piece of Benetnasch loomed dangerously at the front of the group near the center of the courtyard, inching ever-closer to the Trumpeter whose defeat could spell the end of all their efforts. And holding it back were Minohiko and Kakyo, each laying fists into the sides of the Septentrione as it advanced, forcing them back...the blows between them adding up as they competed against one another for the most damage and the first to land the finishing blow against it. It was almost like watching two alpha dogs fight over the last scrap of meat...if only that scrap of meat was steadily inching towards the magical 'End of All Humanity' button that would bring an end to existence. And it was almost within reach of its target now...the hundredth blow of each fighter still not enough to break the Septentrione even as its hide cracked and spread out in broken webs along its hide at each blow. Their demons spat magic down from above and fried the top, but this Slice was more resistant...it wasn't dying...it was slowing, but not slow enough...Kakyo's eyes grew more desperate, Mino's more angry...closer...closer it drew...
"s**t, we have to stop it!"
"Hit harder, then!"
"You think I'm not...?!"
"Will you two SHUT UP!?"
...A powerful female voice burst over head as the violet-haired young woman at last returned to the fray with the last of the buds and spores dealt with, crashing her foot into the edge of the Septentrione Slice hard enough that its momentum was at last stalled...before an attack knocked her back towards a wall where her partner-in-crime caught her just short of a deadly landing. She coughed, and cursed...but she had done her part. Now, it was time...the way had been opened. They had only to step through the gate to the world of tomorrow...
"Time to DIE!"
"Get the HELL out of my city!"
Everything they had was thrown into one attack...their devils, their fists, every last ounce of energy in their bodies! And as they landed the light began to shimmer from the cracks within Benetnasch...brightly illuminating the darkened city, a beacon of brightness...a beacon of hope in the courtyard of Oshu City.
And then the cracks became intense...power leaking out of every opening...and an explosion! Blue magnetite rushing out in every direction!
...And as the pieces burst and reduced to nothing, the battle came at last to its conclusion, the force of it knocking the Boss hard back onto the ground where he lay flat upon his back in an absolute exhaustion. It was over...
...It was finally. Finally...over.
...
In the distance he could hear Mino shouting that the finishing blow had been his own. And the Doof Warrior still rocked dramatically atop his truck, but where he lay at the center of this cursed courtyard, Kakyo Kaido merely remained silent. His eyes could see only the shimmering stars and the distant voice of space all around him, above. His lips let out short breaths...and his mind at last came to peace, to terms, with a finality that he had almost given up hope on so many times before. This plan...this fight...it had worked.
Benetnasch was actually defeated.
His mind drifted...his eyes closed as he heard footsteps approaching, and he wondered idly if his wife was well now, resting back at the warehouse unaware, blissfully, of the terror that he had just endured and the victory that had been so hard-bought by all. He wondered if the new world, whatever it would now become, would be just as beautiful as that picture of her inside of his mind...sitting there reading her little books and magazines, that soft smile upon her face, waiting for his return...
Maybe it would be the same...maybe it would be more so.
Only tomorrow would know for sure.
"Get up, Kakyo. It's over."
"We WON, Boss! We kicked Benny's a**!"
He smiled faintly, letting them drag him from the ground back to his feet where everyone was already gathering together with their allies to return home and prepare for tomorrow.
"...Yeah, we did...didn't we?"
...
And somewhere, on a rooftop, a light snoring could be heard.
...

Kaori Sakurazaka, the Wild Cherry Blossom of the Human Weapons Unit  A new day. Another day to keep surviving. Keep fighting. Their victory the day before had been glorious, but short lived. She hadn't imagined so many could work together so well to finish one sole enemy. Sure, there had been bantering here and there, but... they had done well. Boss Kaido had done well. For that, she was grateful. He had been the one to come up with the idea...the one who convinced Trumpeter. (Well... not on his own, but Kaori wasn't about to acknowledge that guy so willingly.) Idly she wondered how Kakyo was doing; how his team was doing...and if they were ready for the tribulations to come that day. She had no doubt. Even if their antics were... unorthodox, they did their job well.
The violet haired girl stood up from the improvised futon and rolled her shoulders. She was sore from the fight with that last Septentrione last night; she wasn't defeated yet though, and she would fight til the end. The Restorer fraction had won in the end, though... Crimson eyes lowered for a moment, before turning to her companion. What were they to do now? The idea she had had for a world wasn't possible now...she had lost to the Restorers before. They were strong, at least that she could assure. Getting back to the world they had before... it wasn't...so bad, was it?
"What do you think, Kei...?"
