In Venetian/Italian/Renaissance/Zorro times..where a full mask isn't needed

Nerezza is almost a household name, a name of the famed highly skilled cold blooded assassin who never fails. His name strikes fear, and he is recognized by his signature mask. Nerezza has been hired and has successfully assassinated highly guarded persons.

Alphonso


The title and mask passes on within a certain family. The current bearer is Alphonso. His father was the previous Nerezza, and his ancestors were Nerezza before that. Alphie was trained his whole life in fighting, even though he did not have much desire for killing. Alphie himself is a moral and kind man who does not kill unless absolutely necessary.

However, upon donning the mask, Alphie will kill without hesitating as it is the reputation of Nerezza and his job. It is the family's trade, and for the name to be tarnished would mean hard times for business.

The surname Alphie goes by, if asked, is Marrone.

Alphie is a light hearted, chivalrous, optimistic man who truly cherishes life. He is the type to save people from suicide, and he is unlikely to kill unless necessary. He will feel guilt if he ends up killing more than he needed to, e.g. when he intends to stop someone without killing them, but ends up killing them instead. Alphie does not show his skills obviously to avoid trouble and will even go to the extent of being beat up by street thugs to avoid showing his skill with fighting...although he may dodge slightly to avoid areas on his body where he does not want to get hit.

When Alphie put on the mask, he becomes Nerezza, a cold hearted assassin who will kill any target and any others that gets in the way of the assassination. These include unintended witnesses. He is renowned for his skill, and mention of his name intimidates others.

Skills: As with many trained assassins, Alphie has impeccable timing and reaction time and is an expert at landing strikes and dodging. Yes, he can sneak around and move like a ninja. He has excellent hand-eye coordination and calculations of wind, light, and weight when using weapons. He can also juggle and has a vast knowledge of plants in the wild that may be used for medicinal purposes. Also handy are his survival instincts and skills. He lives to use his skills whether to defend or take life.
Past: His main weapons comprise blades; his weapon of choice usually being a long sword. He has short swords also as throwing knives and for small spaces.
Modern: He still uses blades because they are quieter, but he probably classes into a sniper as he is very much a loner.
Bio:

As the only child of his father and the loss of his mother, he was naturally the next to take the mantle. The other relatives thought of Alphie's father as a drunk (even though he wasn't) and didn't take kindly to Alphie either, blaming Alphie and his father for Alphie's mother's death.

Past Times Version
The assassins work for a family, the same family they have worked with for generations. Once Alphie's father dies, Alphie leaves to wander. Blah blah......searching for someone to vow his sword to.



Modern Times Version
Alphie is a freelance and takes jobs as needed or requested. He has picked up a potential successor, or at least someone he pitied and began to train Dais. As part of the training, Dais has joined the police force.

Personality: Stoic. Emotionless. Quiet. Cold. Level headed and calm no matter the situation with a long fuse(well, he's stoic so he looks calm). Dais has that tough guy attitude about him and will only speak if necessary. He also seems to lack a sense of humor. He’s not great at socializing, and sometimes may just use the wrong words in the situation. He is protective of his younger siblings.
Skills:
Bio biggrin ais Balderon is the eldest child of a middle class family. His parents were always pushing him and his loud sister to excel in academics and take up an instrument; however, Dais was naturally athletic and found more joy in training for sports and physical challenges. He had a relatively “normal” childhood and even ended up being a drummer for a band made up of friends in high school against his parents’ wishes. However, sometimes, because of his timing issues, his friends ended up playing the music and singing the song to his beat since …well, the drum is supposed to keep the beat. Unfortunately, with the band came fan girls to his dismay.

Things took a turn for the worst for the family when the father was killed in a car accident, and the mother heavily injured and bedridden from the same incident. At this time, Dais was still in high school, and his sister was in middle school while the youngest brother was in elementary school. Dais quit the band and took to working a parttime job in order to relieve financial burdens, making use of the part time job's requirements to further physically challenge himself. It was at one of these times when he was making a delivery to a dangerous area that he first met Alphie. Alphie had been impressed by Dais's success in defending himself.

As it was his parents' wishes that all the children attend college, Dais did apply for college in his senior year and then went off to a college as Annie entered high school. Dais knew their mother would be gone soon, and she did die soon after. He had, already had this point started working jobs that were higher risk but paid more in order to support his sister and younger brother.

His sister took to DJing and music as a parttime, but Dais had her stop while he worked so she could take care of the youngest brother. He switched to the police academy, and encountered Alphie again. It was then that Alphie took him under his wing.

Dais then ended up as a cop for experience on defense.

                                          History:
                                          The title/name of "Nerezza" has been passed down through the bearers of the mask in Alphie's lineage for generations. The name and the mask are inseparable and infamous to the point it even known in the royal circles. The bearer is usually kept secret even to the family except for the current bearer and the successor. Alphie's father is the former Nerezza, and Alphie succeeded him. Alphie has been trained to be an assassin pretty much since birth although he was not told until he in his teens of his role as the next Nerezza.

                                          Alphonso was born in Tahna to a "drunk" father and a loving mother. Alphie's father was a drunk who went out to other bigger cities to earn money, and somehow was able to earn enough for the family. After a couple years, the family moved to a larger city. Unknown to his mother and himself, his father was the current Nerezza and the "drunk" was simply his cover (not to say he didn't like the company of booze). The lad was taught basic observation and defense skills right from the beginning, although the purpose was for him to know how to defend himself and his mother...somehow as a toddler. Unfortunately, Alphie lost his mother not so long after he came five years old. Alphie's mother had been an unfortunate casualty in a skirmish in the marketplace in the city while she was on a grocery trip. As the only child of his father and given the loss of his mother, he was naturally the next to take the mantle.

                                          While the relatives in Tahna blamed Alphie's father, they grudgingly babysat Alphie a few times while his father had to travel for his job. When Alphie became ten years old, he decided he didn't want to stay in Tahna since he wanted to explore more. Thus, Alphie's father took him with him on his travels, and even though Alphie's father would have to "mysteriously" disappear sometimes to run errands, Alphie was completely fine.

                                          On these trips, Alphie learned that his father worked for a house/family in Laia although it had to be kept a secret. He also learned that his father was rather versatile, fluent in languages and dialects he couldn't understand, such as that of the language in the Vessan isle region. This was especially demonstrated when they were shipwrecked and attacked by pirates on a trip to the island containing Vessan. The two of them, along with others on the shipwreck were able to fend off pirates.

                                          With his father, he traveled to each of the regions on the continent and was even dumped into fighting tournaments or random challenges...for training, so his father said. When he was 15, his father informed him of the Nerezza legacy. That was when he realized that everything he had learned was for the purpose of fulfilling his role as next in line. He questioned the assassinations, but his father explained that it was the job and no reason needed to be given. From that time and on, his father and he shared the Nerezza mask and alternated on the missions all over the land. Their duties included spying, guarding, assassination, message courier, posing as others. However, no matter what, they would still return to Tahna every couple years to pay their respects to Alphie's mother, who was buried in Tahna. Alphie would always help out with off jobs on those visits while his father seemed still "drunk", but not as much as before his mother passed.

                                          During their travels, they spent some time in Teshiar, where Alphie first met a young orphan named Tiki. They became friends.

                                          When Alphie was 25, his father the "drunk" was executed as a scapegoat for some crime in a big city, although he wasn't identified as Nerezza. Alphie took over as Nerezza completely, but ended the stint with the family/house in Laia once he discovered that his employer had a hand in scapegoating his father. And so, he became freelance. While not on duty as Nerezza, Alphie's cover was/is a mediocre mercenary for hire since it allowed him an excuse to travel .

                                          Imagine Alphie's surprise when he ran into Tiki the next time he returned to Tahna.

                                          It wasn't long before Alphie took on a promising apprentice named Dais, who he had discovered in an alley fighting off a group of assailants while Dais was delivering some sort of package in another town. Turns out Dais had some distant ties to Tahna too. While the boy couldn't be trained from birth as Alphie had, Dais already had the basics of martial arts and was a natural. Nerezza has been kept entirely a secret from Alphie's apprentice, Dais, although Dais would know for a fact that Alphie is much better than the "mediocre mercenary" he works as.

                                          Alphie has taken a break from being an assassin and spends his days currently training Dais and doing odd jobs as he always has when returning to the village. He sometimes still travels with Dais to the cities, but since the skull incident, he has not traveled.

                                          Skills: As an assassin, Alphie has always been a good ninja type character, who is good at sneaking around and attacking silently.
                                          Alphie has strong survival instincts and has a vast knowledge of plants in the wild that may be used for medicinal purposes. He is not a doctor, but knows enough to get him out of most situations. Fatal medical situations are a toss up. While knowing which plants to avoid because they are poisonous, plant poison is not something Alphie uses for killing. He only uses blades and himself. Alphie has a high pain tolerance, or rather he is great at ignoring pain while still functioning. Alphie is good at escaping, although this may be helped by his "ninjaing" skills. If it's not himself escaping, he is good at holding back others to allow others to escape. Along with his other assassin related abilities, Alphie is skilled at sleight of hand, which complements his helping others escape ability because he can distract and pass notes...or just flat out trick/distract. In fighting, this would be feinting, a sh*tload of it.

                                          When Alphie encountered the skull, he gained the ability to manipulate shadow. With this ability, it gave him better night vision, although he doesn't have any control of this... it just kicks in. If there's a shadow on the wall, he can reach into the shadow so it looks like his arm is passing into the wall, but literally he is just reaching into the shadow. What use does this entail? Well, maybe he and others can hide in the shadow and avoid getting hurt. He definitely does not have proper control. If the light destroys the shadow in the room, then everyone hiding in the shadow will immediately appear back in the room right next to where the shadow used to be. Maybe in the future, Alphie will be able to manipulate shadow to be a shield or weapon or make use of manipulating shadow to make camouflage more effective, but only time will tell.

As a result, he has actually traveled to several other kingdoms for missions just as his father had. He is fluent in Verde, High Verde, and one of the main dialects of Selunite. He is able to understand the most common native dialect in the kingdoms. Being able to verbally speak and write in the other languages is a whole other level that is an issue; he knows the minimum to get by. He hates speaking in High Verde, which thankfully is only required in few instances. Alphie's cover is a mediocre mercenary for hire when he is being himself and not Nerezza.

            As the years passed, Alphie took on a promising apprentice named Dais, who he had discovered in an alley fighting off a group of assailants while Dais was delivering some sort of package. While the boy couldn't be trained from birth as Alphie had, Dais already had the basics and was skilled in the martial arts. He seemed to be a natural. And so, Alphie got an apprentice who used the skills to more efficiently earn more money to support his younger siblings, Kyne and Annie. Alphie was exposed to Dais's terrible singing when Dais's sister Annie forced Dais to sing.
            Nerezza and Nerezza's employer have been kept entirely a secret from Dais although Dais would know for a fact that Alphie is much better than the "mediocre mercenary" he works as.

            One of the tasks given to him as Nerezza required him to collaborate with Strychnine in their earlier years. This particular task was to track down and retrieve a rare fragile relic, which ended up being in a dangerous set of ruins. Nerezza was there to participate and also make sure everything went without a hitch. And of course, the mission was a success despite some unforseen dangers and traps in the process. Other than that, Alphie has not worked with Strychnine as a group. He is aware of the group breaking up, but has continued business as usual.

            Recently, Alphie received a letter from Dais that informed him that Dais was assisting Hannibal, and that Hannibal was trying to get his former team back together for a meeting. Alphie paid it no heed until he heard news in the grapevine that Hannibal was dead. He tried to locate Dais, but did not succeed. Since his only lead was Dais's letter about Hannibal trying to get the team back together at "their old home town", he decided to join up with Strychnine's old crew because his apprentice Dais disappeared around the same time as Hannibal, and he believes that it is not simply a coincidence. Of course, he's not about to let everyone know he actually cares about Dais...but come on... if he joined because of Dais, it's telling. Dais is about 25 at the time of the disappearance.
