UPDATE: I have decided to get a BJD. After turning 18 and obtaining a debit card, I went ahead and ordered some clothing & accessories for my future doll. There goes my $52.

Hello peeps! So I've wanted a BJD for quite a while now (five years, lol) & I already know all the proper care a BJD needs. However when I told my sister about saving $900 for my first doll, she told me that it was just a doll & that it was a waste of money. But the thing is, I REALLY want one. My sister then asks me what I wanted to do with the doll so I stated that I was just going to take some pictures and use the doll as a base for a story character that I'm writing. Currently, my whole family is trying to persuade me to NOT spend the $900 on the doll. Now as I'm thinking back, although I would want a BJD, what else am I going to do with it? Most likely, the doll will be sitting on a bookshelf except for the occasional photo-shoots. So Gaian-community, are BJD's a waste of money & should I even get one?

I've been "collecting" BJDs for years. Yes, they sit on the shelf most of the time, but I do take photos of them when I have the time.
I spend my own hard-earned money on them, so my family has no say in this hobby.
I was skeptical at first, but once I received my first doll, I knew it was worth the money I spent on it.

I fear no one here can really tell you if you should get a doll and if it'll be worth it to you or not. That is entirely up to you. But the same goes for people around you. If you're old enough, all your bills are taken care of, you have that kind of money and it belongs to you alone, you can spend it on whatever you want.

I've been in the hobby for a few years now, own 15 dolls and every single one of them is worth it to me. They keep me creative, I customize them myself, have never commissioned a face up, and of course taking pictures of them is a lot of fun too.
There's phases when I don't feel like doing anything with them though, and those can get quite long to be honest. That's okay though. It's nice knowing they'll always be there for me to come back to and work on when I have enough free time and feel like it. For other people phases like this might mean it's not for them. Know what I mean? classified_northkittenstar

Sure they are a waste of money in the sense of, you don't need them for your life/everyday life. But you also don't need half the other s**t people usually buy for entertainment and out of impulse. BJD collecting is a luxury hobby like any other. Completely unnecessary, but worth it if you can afford it and find happiness in it. Simple as that.

If you think you'll regret spending the money on bjd, then it might be a better idea not to, but if you really love a doll, and you have the money to spend without depriving yourself of essentials (housing, food, healthcare, etc.), it's totally up to you. I have six bjd, and sure, I've spent a lot of money to get them and outfit them, etc, but I've gotten a lot of enjoyment out of it, and that's worth it to me. I don't often play with my dolls anymore, because I'm very busy, but I love them and even when the only thing I do with them is keep them stored safely, I'm glad I bought them. I know I will again have time and room to set them up and play with them more frequently, and add to the family.

Another thing I love is spending time with others who have bjd, and I can't remember anybody saying their dolls were a waste of money. Sometimes you buy a doll that you end up not loving as much as you thought you would, but usually you can sell it to another person. If you have a chance, go to a doll meet before you get your doll, so you can look at other people's bjd, and get a better idea of what they look like in person. If someone has the particular bjd you are wanting to get, so much the better. You might decide that you don't think it's worth it after all, or your adoration of them might just increase. Or maybe you'll find yourself drawn to a completely different kind of bjd than you thought you were interested in.

Also, your sister is mistaken, bjd are not 'just dolls.' They are works of art, and luxuries, and the price reflects that. Art is bought for aesthetic reasons, and for enjoyment and display. It doesn't have to be useful or have any other practical purpose except to make you happy.

Personally I love my BJD. But I also got her for 25$... It's one of the older porcelain dolls not the japanese kind that are in style now. 900$ to me seems a bit much.. It's really up to you. I bought mine when I was 19 and she's been in my giant curio-cabinet since.

Umm, porcelain dolls aren't BJDs. They typically lack ball joints. There's nothing wrong with liking your porcelain doll, but it's not a Ball-Jointed Doll.

She's a Bisque doll so yes, she is ball jointed and she is porcelain. If you need the definition of Bisque doll I'll be happy to link it.

I think when someone says BJD, they're referring to a Asian Ball Jointed Doll that are made out of resin.

That's very sad if its true. Not all bjd's are those types of dolls..

I mean, that's the modern abbreviated term specifically for those type of dolls(Asian Ball Jointed Dolls), that's probably why. I think they were called ABJD at one point. Some people probably still call them that.

I do believe your doll is a ball jointed doll, but you wouldn't use that modern abbreviated term to describe your doll because that modern abbreviated term is for the Asian ball jointed dolls made from resin. Like, if you were to Google images "BJD" Asian ball jointed dolls would come up, the ones made from resin. A vast amount.

Why is that? BJD just refers to a specific type of doll as Fukuya has already stated. Yes, it's technically an abbreviation that can be applied to a wide variety of dolls as long as they have the right type of jointing, but it's still a coined term. Nothing sad about that, it's just how it is. Doesn't mean different types of dolls with ball - or other joints aren't lovely as well.

Uhh... Back on topic, I think people are really silly honestly. I went through a lot of people questioning my doll hobby and its costs and what I ask them is what they buy and what they like to spend money on.

Video games? Movies? Action figures? Etc? What do you do with those really? I get a lot more use out of my BJDs than I do a lot of movies and books I buy. I do re read and rewatch them but not often at all and yet if we say a movie buff/collector is really lax in their hobby and only buys 2 movies a month and sees a movie in the theater 1 time a month that's, at least $50 a month (if they're not getting popcorn and looking for he best deals on new release blue ray) that comes out to $600 a year minimum. Which is a lot of BJDs cost around... And in some cases can get you a doll, some clothes, hair, and eyes total around $600 (like with cheaper or smaller dolls).

The fun thing about BJDs to me is that there are so many different aspects to the hobby. Whether you'd like to try face ups or enjoy sewing or photography or like to go to meet ups and talk with other people about the hobby. Or even if you get really ambitious and start to make your own BJD, there's lots to do with them actually. Even just the maintenance alone is part of the hobby (stringing, restringing, cleaning them, dressing them, etc) and though sometimes frustrating, is also fun.

So in the end I say any and all hobbies are technically a 'waste' of money... But that's sort of the point right? At least with a BJD if you take care of it you can sell the doll for almost the same price you bought it for which definitely cannot be said for video games and movies. So if you happen to leave the hobby it's not too much money lost.

As everyone else said though, we can't tell you what you personally should feel as far as how much your hobby is worth and how to spend your money, but imo, you should do what you want.
