The Unofficial Documentation of a Cartographer's Discoveries--File One
Location: Desert Ruins Latitude: xx° xx' xx" S Longitude: xx° xx' xx" E Claudius The midday sun would find Claudius deep in the heart of the desert, his eyes locked on a peculiar silhouette that was beginning to solidify in the distance. A little over a week ago, the Aurorus had received a peculiar missive from one of his Exploration Teams, stating that they could not report their findings to him due to an oath they had made while completing their escort mission. Naturally, after the Fairy Woods incident, such a note sent up warning flags in the leader's mind, but based on the information he did know Claudius knew he wouldn't be able to press the matter with Team Catalyst; that left only one option.
He gave the mission a week, trying to learn what he could about the environment by sending Guild workers ahead to search for any rumors about the place: they returned to him with reports of evasive comments and occasional hostility, but none of them seemed to be able to pinpoint what about the ruins had these Pokemon so guarded. Given the sensitivity of the matter, he hadn't sent more than three Pokemon before him, and none of them had revealed their associations with any other, listening more than they spoke. It was fortunate that there were enough desert visitors to ask the questions for his observers, otherwise Claudius would have been going into this affair almost blind.
Now the Aurorus had departed himself, having asked Veilmys to look after his Teams in his absence, and had been traveling most of the day to get to the point he had reached now. Coming to a pause by a large, flat rock that suited his purposes, Claudius reached into his scarf and pulled out a map, unrolling it on the stone with great care after sweeping it clean of sand with his tail. A foot rested on either side of the curling edges as he reached into the scarf again, withdrawing a pen and ink. Closing the distance between himself and the paper by bending his long neck, the Aurorus unstopped the ink, picked up the pen, and dipped it in before beginning to draw. With a seasoned cartographer's eye, Claudius filled in the details of the sector he was located in down the the rock his map rested upon. When he was satisfied, he allowed the map to roll together once more and replaced all of the items in his scarf until he needed them again. Ideally the next time would be when he'd gotten close enough to sketch the ruins.
The large Pokemon began walking again, his path hardly difficult to track through the sands and his destination in sight. His icy scales gleamed in the sunlight, making him almost blinding to look at, and even hurting the Aurorus' own eyesight a little. He didn't mind the desert normally, since his body temperature was kept constantly freezing thanks to his typing, but the sun could make him quite weary after too much exposure, and the way it made him sparkle was frankly inconvenient and somewhat embarrassing. Still, Claudius didn't mind the work so long as he learned something from all of this. For the moment, he had the additions to his map; in the future he intended to learn the secret of these ruins, to set his mind at ease once and for all. He was to look after the Teams under his jurisdiction, and to know all there was to know about each place that had been explored thus far--this journey would accomplish both goals.

On a sand dune off in the distance, quills flattened in an attempt to remain hidden, a Sandslash watched the large quadrupedal pokemon. For him, today was like any other day. The ground type was always on the lookout for strangers wandering into his clan's territory. For now, the Aurorus hadn't strayed too close, but his general direction indicated that he would approach the imaginary line that the clan considered the border of their domain.
Unlike other strangers, this one didn't seem to be affected by the heat. Likely due to the fact he was an ice type, the Sandslash thought. There was one thing about the Aurorus that caught his attention more than anything. The giant was stopping for long periods to do something. He wasn't eating or drinking, that much was clear. However, the distance made it hard to tell precisely what it was that this stranger was going. The uncertainty of it set the Sandslash on edge. Normally it was easy to tell if someone was lost or actively looking for something, but in this case it wasn't. The constant looking around was similar to someone that was lost, but the deliberate stops and methodical direction would indicate a search.
Unhappy with the fact that the strangers direction was likely lead him to the ruins, the Sandslash burrowed into the sand. As large as the Aurorus was, he was going to need help if he was to successfully change his course. With his resolve set, and a plan in mind, he headed back to the underground city to get help. Within minutes or reaching his destination, he had gathered several volunteers. Among them were some of the fire types that made their home here as well as some of the other ground types. With the fire types at his side, he hoped to be able to turn the Aurorus around.
Finally, with everyone ready the Sandslash went back to the hallway filled with sand and began to burrow back to the surface. Those capable of following in this manner did so, while the fire types were teleported outside the city and behind a rocky outcropping by the three Delphox sisters that oversaw the sandy entrance. All the Sandslash had to do now was wait for the right moment to strike, and with his team of six, he was confident his attack would be successful.

Claudius The Aurorus continued on his path unaware of the ambush being planned for him, but not entirely unsuspecting that something would go awry soon. The closer he grew to the ruins, the more certainty he felt that something of consequence was about to happen; if it didn't happen before he reached the ruins, it would happen inside, but an event was inevitable--nothing else could explain the complete absence of Pokemon around this area. Claudius had the odd sensation of being watched from time to time, but he didn't search for the source, since it could easily have been nothing more than a product of his imagination. Besides, any time spent looking for Pokemon was time taken away from observing the geography around him, which he prized far more in the grand scheme of things: when one was forced to make maps from memory and fragmented stories as much as Claudius was, the chance to actually explore an area on his own and commit each detail to the page was one that he wanted to savor. He breathed in the dry air, cooling it with his frigid breath, and sighed contentedly--field work was always engaging, if nothing else.
Claudius stopped his movement again when the ruins began to take up a sizable part of the horizon. He'd reach them within the hour most likely, provided he kept up a steady pace, and met with no trouble. Close as he was, the Aurorus was constantly on his guard by this point, though he remained calm and watchful rather than expressing any signs of worry. Others in his place would likely express more concern, since most of the dominant Types here had an advantage on a Pokemon of his species, but Claudius liked to assume that the locals were rational for the most part and could be talked down from combat; he'd managed to make his way out of many a tight situation in this manner before, so experience gave him the confidence no to fret over such things. In situations like these, the most important thing was to be assured of the fact that there was no reason to believe you were doing any wrong (or to act as such if you knew otherwise). This was precisely the attitude the Aurorus assumed as he pulled out his mapping utensils and began to sketch in the details for this next section. The action put him in a vulnerable position to be sure, but that also confirmed his intentions: he was here to create his maps and nothing more, at least as far as anyone who might inquire was concerned.

The ever watchful Sandslash slowed as he neared the surface and poked his head out of the sand slightly. He was searching for the Aurorus he had seen earlier. No doubt the ice type had breached the perimeter of the colony's territory by now, and if so, he needed to be dealt with as soon as possible. The Sandslash didn't like anyone coming so close to the ruins. Allowing such could compromise the hidden city he guarded, as well as all of its inhabitants. They may have recently allowed one group to enter the city, but Kennet - he had been told - had chosen to join them. The growlithe, he knew to be loyal. Those strangers would pose no threat to the colony, because Kennet wouldn't allow it. This put his mind at ease in regards to that group, but this Aurorus was a different matter. The Sandslash was unaware of Claudius' affiliation to the guild where Team Catalyst came from, as well as the fact that his presence here was, in a way, a direct result of them keeping their promise.
After scanning the horizon briefly, the Sandslash spotted his target. Sure enough, the Aurorus had crossed into the colony's territory. If he kept going at this rate, he'd make it to the ruins within the hour. However, the Sandslash was close enough to make out what the Aurorus was doing now, which made him even madder. He was surveying the area. This, could not be allowed. The area had to remain uncharted to protect his home. He was going to stop the stranger before he could come any closer to the colony.
Blinded by his anger, he burrowed back underground, leading the ground types that accompanied him toward their unwanted guest. They all knew how this was supposed to go. They had used the same tactics against others in the past. It was a good and proven strategy. To them, this was just another routine run. Within a minute they reached their target with little noise, and the leading Sandslash initiated the ambush.
Sandslash attempted to strike Claudius as he dug to the surface, launching himself at the Aurorus. The other ground types surfaced behind Claudius after the first attack was launched, attempting to position themselves to strike. The Krookodile, set about readying a mudslap for when Claudius would have to turn to face the group to try and not only damage his opponent, but lower his accuracy as well. The little Sandshrew that was among those who had volunteered also readied a move with the intent to try and lower the ice type's accuracy, a Sand Attack. Lastly, the Sandile readied his Sand Tomb in an effort to try and trap Claudius, to prevent escape.
Meanwhile, the two fire types waited behind their cover about one hundred yards away, still unaware that the battle had already begun.

Claudius The Aurorus was almost finished with his markings when the ground beneath him erupted into a burst of earth, scattering soil everywhere and causing Claudius to inhale sharply at the sudden pain that resulted from a blow to his sensitive stomach. He hadn't been expecting such underhanded tactics from any potential assailants, but then perhaps that was only wishful thinking. Rearing up on his back legs, Claudius stomped down hard on the ground in front of him, to ensure that whatever had hit him would fall off, and couldn't get a grip on such a sensitive part of his body, before stepping to the side and turning immediately to his map, which he was most concerned for. His ink bottle had spilled over, but fortunately it had fallen off the rock rather than onto his precious parchment, which had rolled back up on itself immediately after he'd removed his weight from it. Bending down to pick up the paper, Claudius held it carefully in his mouth, extending his neck up to his full height so his map wouldn't be in danger of being torn in the scuffle, but there wasn't time to nestle it back in his scarf just yet: standing still any longer would be particularly unwise.
The Aurorus turned himself around to try and see what had attacked him, and was met with a stream of mud and sand to his knees. Naturally, the Pokemon that had sent the moves towards him were too small for the attacks to reach his eyes, but it did make it almost impossible for Claudius to tell what sort of Pokemon he was fighting--all he really knew was that there was more than one of them. To make matters worse, the winds around the area began to pick up, sending sand flying all around the Aurorus and effectively keeping him in one place for the time being. Frustrated that he couldn't even speak with his adversaries without putting his map at risk, Claudius breathed a sigh through his nose and began to chill the air around he and his opponents, wreathing them in a fine Mist that prevented any further attempts on his vision.
When the change in atmosphere began to take effect, it allowed the Aurorus to get a better bearing on the situation. His eyes turned on four Ground Types, each one with determination in their eyes that suggested they weren't playing any games here--something had made these Pokemon very angry with him. Claudius's eyes widened as he spotted a Sandshrew and Sandile among his adversaries' numbers, and the Aurorus felt a twinge of concern for the two lesser evolved Pokemon. What did they think they were doing, challenging a Pokemon of his size? If he wasn't extremely careful, he could crush any one of his adversaries with a wrong step, and that thought was far more terrifying than the unexpected ambush was at all. Immediately Claudius's mind churned into overdrive, trying to decide on the best course of action here; if they didn't intend to back down he'd have to deal with them as carefully as possible to ensure the damage was as minimal as possible. Of all the terrible luck... Settling on freezing as the best course of action, sent a burst of Icy Wind towards his enemies, ensuring that their movement would be slower since they'd have to fight against the wind. Stepping back carefully, the Aurorus began to expel freezing air from the crystals on his size--air that was certain to crystallize a non-Ice Type if one got too close. For the moment he waited, the map in his mouth beginning to ice over as well as he watched his opponents, hopeful that he wouldn't have to involve himself further and they would freeze themselves by acting rashly.

((I moved the visual ref. down. I'll move it down with each post and remove it entirely after the battle is over.)) The Sandslash, having been closest to Claudius because of his opening move, was unable to get out of range of the Icy Wind in time. He was blown back, chilled because of the temperature of the air. His skin felt as if it was on fire. His most affected area was his left claw though. He wouldn't be able to use it very effectively till after he had backed off and feeling returned to it once more. Once thawed, it was going to be painful because of his weakness to ice. However, he wasn't going to let that stop him. He was determined to drive the Aurorus out, no matter how much he got hurt in the process. Finally, after a few seconds had passed, he was able to make it out of range of the Icy Wind. Turning to look at his comrades, he quickly tried to assess the situation. The Krookodile he had brought with him was out of range for the attack now and had managed to avoid the brunt of the attack. Overall he appeared only mildly scathed, having been quick enough to move before too much damage had been done. The other two ground types with him however, appeared to have been hit harder. Being less experienced, they had charged in blindly and taken the worst damage. Both were covered in ice. They were lucky to have been able to sustain such a solid hit and be able to retreat. He hoped that they would be more careful until the fire types were able to reach the battle. Now that the battle was underway, it was time to signal his two companions still hiding nearby. Knowing that it would more than likely not reach the Aurorus, but only needing it to make noise, Sandslash jumped up high and came back down on the ground hard, releasing energy into the earth, causing it to shake with the force of a Magnitude 6 quake. His attack had not been as strong as he had hoped, but it would do. The earth was shaking with enough force for it to be heard quite some distance away. Unable to do much else until the Icy Wind faded, the four ground types kept back to wait for an opportunity. Hearing the tremor from the quake, the Ponyta and Numel who had been hiding behind a rock face a little over a hundred yards away sprang into action. Both ran toward the scene of the fight, ready for action. It would take time for them to come within striking range, but both were already readying their attacks for their impending arrival. The Ponyta began raising the temperature of its flames, preparing to completely engulf its body in flames for a Flame Wheel once it was close enough. The Numel, slower than his companion, began readying a Flame Burst.

Claudius Alas Claudius found his adversaries didn't fall for his ploy and fell back rather than advancing towards him after his Icy Wind struck the majority of them. The winds still blew in his enemies' direction, though they wouldn't be damaging any longer, only maintaining the headwind that the other Pokemon would have to break through to get to him. At least that would slow them down while he tried to decide how to proceed. The Aurorus still couldn't move, his own winds unable to pierce through the funnel of a Sand Tomb that still held him in its grasp and still kept him in one place. He didn't know which of his adversaries had whipped up the twister, but he was certain they wouldn't be able to maintain it when frozen--then he might be able to might some progress here. Bowing his head to tuck the map safely in his scarf, Claudius was quite shaken when the earth trembled beneath him, and stumbled a bit: Aurorus were sturdy creatures, but if they were knocked off balance things could get very bad indeed. Fortunately the Magnitude hadn't been enough to put him at any serious risk of falling, but that fact did nothing to ease his concern.
The four ground types in front of him seemed to be holding back for some reason, so Claudius took advantage of the situation to assess their status. The two evolved Pokemon seemed fine, but the poor Sandshrew and Sandile where beginning to look quite frosty--there was no option but to take care of them first, before they got themselves seriously injured. "Please," he said softly, his tone filled with well-meaning concern, "I don't want to hurt you. What have I--?"
The Aurorus didn't get the chance to voice his question before he felt a sudden heat against his hind leg, and swiveled around with surprise and a slight pain to find a Ponyta trotting back from where it had struck him, unaffected by his ice due to the fire that spiraled around its body. Claudius held back a groan at the sight of another under-evolved opponent and then proceeded to vocalize it when he was greeted by the sight of a Numel approaching as well. No, Arceus, why? Spotting the flames in the maw of the small Fire Type, Claudius moved as quickly as he could to step out of the way, but was prevented from doing so by the wall of sand that constricted his motion. Unfortunately, the result led the Flame Burst to collide with the ground and fly outwards in a ring that not only struck Claudius square in his side, but would be difficult for his opponents to dodge as well. He was beginning to suspect that this ambush hadn't been very well planned out at all. Still, he had no option but to retaliate, and he did so--albeit as considerately as possible. Extending his icy temperatures to the sky, clouds formed through the mist that still lingered about them and Powder Snow began to fall all over the area around them. It would hurt them, to be sure, but it might help to quell the fire that still lingered and could hurt the creatures that surrounded him. Even as he waited for a response or another retaliation, Claudius turned to locate the Sandshrew and Sandile: next time he would remove them from the battle without fail, unless he was fortunate enough for the battle to stop or the chilling snow to freeze them first.

The flame burst that the Numel had fired, caused burst damage to the Ponyta that had just rammed into Claudius' hind leg. The fire type neighed slightly as it stumbled a little. The initial attack had hit the ground, not only sending fire outwards to strike the Ponyta, but shifting the ground in front of it as well. However, it managed to stay upright. The fire hadn't done too much damage to the equine pokemon, but it had taken a hit nonetheless. The Powder Snow now falling from the sky slowed both fire types movement speed, and although it hurt, both pushed through it as they readied their next attacks. The Ponyta galloped to the other side as the Numel finally finished catching up. Simultaneously, they fired an ember, neither one aware of the realization that their leader was now starting to coming to. The leading Sandslash was appalled at how little the flames had damaged the Aurorus. He was an ice type. The fire should have been devastating, but his opponent didn't seem too bothered by it at all. He had never encountered an Aurorus before today, so he had assumed it to be pure ice, however, it seems that was not the case. What he had hoped would be an advantage, was now hindrance to him and the others instead. He and the Krookodile had been far enough back that they hadn't been hit with the burst damage, but the Sandshrew and Sandile hadn't been so lucky. At the sight of the fire type's approach, they had moved back in to ready themselves for another attack. Having suffered from the burst damage from the flame burst, the Sandshrew and Sandile didn't have the strength to resist the Powder Snow. As they moved in to try and strike at Claudius - both having already been partially frozen by the icy wind earlier - they finally succumbed to the icy temperatures, and froze in mid-stride. With the Sandile down, the sands around Claudius quit swirling and fell back down to the ground, freeing him up and re-granting him the ability to move from his spot. The Sandslash leader, was not pleased. He was down by two, and his enemy didn't seem phased in the slightest. He and the Krookodile were going to have to brave the Powder Snow and get in closer. Turning to the other evolved pokemon, he called out "Move in closer!"The Krookodile nodded in return and ran in, after the embers had been fired. Though the Powder Snow effected him greatly, the Krookodile grit his teeth as he endured the pain. When he got closer to Claudius, he let out a cry, opening his jaws wide. He launched himself forward through the snow, attempting to Crunch down on one of Claudius' legs, hoping to draw the attention of the larger pokemon as the Sandslash burrowed back down underground, intending to dig and come up behind the Aurorus, out of his sight.

Claudius Claudius was thoroughly surprised (though not unpleasantly so) when the Sandshrew and Sandile fell victim to the freezing temperatures of the snow he'd summoned, both of them icing over before they could get close enough to strike him. Better still, their icing brought about the ending of the irksome Sand Tomb that had been restricting his movement, and immediately the Aurorus took several steps backward, away from the two tiny Ground Types who were trapped in the ice so that they couldn't be caught up in the battle any longer. The worst possible scenario had been avoided for those two at least, but there were still four other Pokemon who didn't seem phased at all by the loss of their companions, and still hadn't spoken a word to him. There would be no reasoning with them while they were in a group it seemed, but perhaps if he reduced their number to one he could make this civil again.
A chain of attacks followed this realization, two Embers struck Claudius on the side, hardly warranting a reaction, and then suddenly he heard a shout, and moments later his leg was being bitten into by the Krookodile. Eyes widening with discomfort, Claudius shot an Aurora Beam at the reptilian creature, shaking his leg as he attempted to disrupt the creature's hold on him. While the Krookodile couldn't keep him still by any means, it was quite painful having teeth penetrate through the hard outer layer of his scales to reach the tender skin underneath, and he preferred to end that as soon as possible.
Unaware of the Sandslash's actions, Claudius instead turned his gaze on the pair of unevolved Fire Types, who still apparently seemed to believe that they had some sort of advantage against him. Perhaps they did, in numbers anyway, but things like Ember merely grazed his scales and were hardly enough to disrupt him. An idea dawned on the Aurorus as he continued to wave his leg about wildly, and without warning he slammed the foot into the ground, wincing a bit from the strength of the impact. The resulting tremor caused the earth to tremble with electricity that shot over toward the pair of Fire Types, ignoring the Ground Types it couldn't influence. The Numel had his Dual Typing to shield him, but the Ponyta would find the electricity climbing up its legs and setting hold in the form of paralysis. That, at least, should be enough to keep the speedy horse from being able to get any more excessively quick strikes in. He still wasn't fully certain how he would deal with the pair yet, but his mind worked quickly even as he glanced down to check on the Krookodile and see if he'd managed to get of it.
