User Image

Team Verruckt's room is somewhat odd; the door is always cracked due to the lack of members with the ability to open doors. Because of this, there is a doorstop attached firmly to the door frame on the right hand side. In order to open the door, the team - or anyone for that matter - merely has to push to get out of the room, or pull on a rope attached to the door knob in order to enter. Despite the rope and the doorstop, the door closes just enough to provide a decent amount of privacy for the team.

Upon entry, one would notice a bookshelf to their immediate right, up against the wall. The bookshelf has maps and books about artifacts on it - they are a treasure hunting team after all. Immediately to the left of the door is an end table with a three-candle candelabra on it. These candles are usually unlit, except for when the desk next to it is in use. On the back wall is the water basin, which is low to the ground; this provides easy access to the basin for most all pokemon. Next to the basin, is another end table with a candelabra - identical to the other one - on it. These candles are also usually unlit unless someone is working at its adjacent desk. The adjacent desk has two chairs in front of it, and nine sorting bins on top. The sorting bins, which contain various items belonging to the team, set securely in a stand. Each basket has a handle on the front allowing it to be pulled out of the stand, much in the same fashion as a filing cabinet - minus the latch.

The last two items in the room are the beds. In the back right corner is Viper's bed. It's more or less a large, round, purple cushion. Mortimer's bed is the same as Viper's bed, except dark blue to match his coat. His bed is located in the bottom left hand corner of the room.

Viper was the first to get back to the room. She went immediately over to the desk where the sorting bins were and pulled one out with her leg. It was a bit awkward, but it worked. After shaking the small purse that had been tied to her leg off into the bin, she shoved the bin back into place and came down off the desk. Her sights now turned to the door as she waited for Mortimer to show his sorry face. Not even the reward money, or the TM she had picked out made her happy right now. The longer she waited for Morty the angrier she got. How dare he leave her laying in that hole.

Mortimer had been stalling. He really didn't want to go back to the team room. He knew Viper was pissed at him. He also knew that as soon as he walked through that door, he was going to catch an ear full. Right now, he really didn't want listen to her. However, he hadn't made any friends in the guild so far so he didn't have anywhere else to go. It wasn't that Morty wasn't social; unlike his team captain, he was actually very friendly. Instead, it was due to how little time he'd been a member.

As he walked down the hallway, headed for Verruckt's room, he sighed dejectedly. Originally, he had thought that he would enjoy being part of the guild. Viper had changed that. She was hateful. Worst of all, she treated him like dirt. As a houndour, his appearance might make him look tough and menacing, but Morty wasn't that kind of pokemon. He and Viper were polar opposites. He tried not to let her get to him, but on days like today it was simply too much. When he had first walked away and left Viper in the hole, he had felt great; he was making a stand and letting her wallow in her own misery. However, it hadn't lasted. Somehow, she had gotten free. What had originally been intended as means to stand up to Viper, had ended up making things worse in the end.

When he finally reached the door, he picked his head up and took a deep breath. He wasn't going to let her see the hurt. He would put on a brave face and act tough, like his exterior appearance might lead others to believe. After stoicizing himself, Morty pulled on the rope hanging from the door knob and entered the team room.

When Morty finally walked through the door and it closed behind him, she exploded. "Why the HELL did you not get me out of that hole?! You aren't fit for anything, are you?! Stupid mutt! I don't see how someone as pathetic as you got into this guild! You're worthless, Mortimer! WORTHLESS!"

Mortimer stared a her blankly. He was going to try to lie to her, but somehow he doubted she would buy it. "I didn't know you had fallen into a hole, Viper," he stated calmly, continuing before she could interrupt him. "You wanted me to go ahead and turn in that torn leather hide, don't you remember? I had gone to turn that in, and on the way back I found something else so I turned it in as well. Next thing I knew, you were marching down the hill toward me, glaring." This wasn't entirely a lie. He had in fact found something on the way back and had turned it in as well, but he had known that Viper was in the hole. He just hoped she didn't realize it.

Did he think she was stupid? She didn't buy his story for one moment. "I heard you snickering Morty! I know you heard me telling you to get me out of that hole! You're stupid if you thought I couldn't hear you!" She was yelling and screaming at this point, but she didn't care. She was pissed, and in her eyes Morty deserved it. "Get out of my sight you worthless dog! I don't want to see your worthless a** again! Do you hear me?! GET OUT!!"

Morty couldn't believe what he was hearing. He knew she was mad, but this was ridiculous. He was being told to leave? He was so stunned that he dropped his guard, and the hurt he felt expressed itself on his face.

Viper saw Morty's expression change. He was hurt. "Aww...Did I hurt its fee-fee's? Does it need it's mamma to come groom it?" her voice changed to an eerily cute voice that someone would use as if talking to a puppy. Then, she became hateful again, raising her voice once more. "Well get over it! You're through Morty! I said get out and I mean it! Don't come back! If you can't take a little criticism or follow orders then you have no place here! GET OUT!"

He pinned his ears back. She'd already seen his hurt. For one second he had exposed himself, and now there was no going back. He was being told to leave and no amount of begging would change things. He would leave for now. He'd be back though, but he didn't plan on returning to Viper. He'd start his own team after he'd collected himself. Right now he wasn't ready to face anyone. He turned and left the room with his head lowered. His posture was that of a scolded hound.

Without a word, he walked out of the guild house and into the night. Within seconds, his form would be lost to anyone who might have been watching; his dark navy blue coat almost seamlessly blending into the dark of night. He didn't know where he would go, but right now he needed to be alone and away from this place.

Morty was late waking up. Last night had been utterly exhausting. It didn't help that he and Viper had already been tired prior to their teleportation to the jungle; they had just returned from their mission moments before the bell had rang, after all. However, a good night's rest had reinvigorated him, or mostly at least. As he stretched, his back audibly popped, further adding to his discomfort. Moving was difficult; his muscles were stiff and sore from his exertions the previous day. His muscles continued to protest as he straightened himself out, taking a few taxing steps away from his bed. All he wanted to do was lay back down, but there was too much to be done.

His thoughts turned first to his team captain, Viper. Just after the last guild wide mission, Viper had kicked him off the team. He had left, hurt and drained emotionally. However, Viper's arrogance had almost gotten her killed. Had he not returned to hear the news of her solo expedition, she would never have made it back. This, was something that the two of them had yet to discuss. She had accepted his help then, but she hadn't yet acknowledged that she owed her life to him. Perhaps that was the source of the thick air between them; there was much to be said, but neither one wanted to be the one to bring it up.

Viper was present in the room with him now, but she gave no indication that she was even paying attention to him. Both remained silent.

She felt uneasy. She had been glad when she got up this morning and Mortimer had still been asleep. She didn't walk want to talk to him, but it was inevitable. He had saved her life despite how horrible she had treated him. Last night, she had been so mad about the drill and she had been so very tired. When they had got back to their room she had gone straight to bed. In short, she had been avoiding talking to him. Neither one of them were talking, but eventually she knew someone would crack.

It was then she heard a soft knock on the door. The sound pulled her away from her thoughts. Slowly, she turned her body to face the doorway. Whoever was outside hadn't opened the door yet, despite the fact that it was partially cracked open for convenience sake. Morty had turned to look at the door as well, but he didn't say anything either. She didn't want to be the one to break the silence, but the knock repeated itself, forcing her speak.
"Who's there?" Her tone was harsh as usual. She didn't want to be bothered by guild members right now, all she wanted was silence. Instead of silence though, she heard a quiet, meek, feminine voice from the other side of the door.

"Sorry to bother you, but I was told this was Team Veerooket's room. Am I in the right place?"

Viper sighed irritably, "It's pronounced Vair-ookt, with a light 't' at the end. Now what do you want?"

"I was hoping I could speak with you. What I have to say would be better said face to face. May I come in?"

Viper sighed again. She really didn't want company right now. Actually, she never wanted company. However, something told her that whoever was on the other side of the door wouldn't leave until they had been allowed in to talk. "Fine. Come in, but make it quick."

Rose

Rose took a deep breath as she was given permission to enter. She was nervous. She had been too sick at the end of the jungle drill to request an audience with any of the teams, and with it being the following day, most teams had already taken a recruit; Verruckt was pretty much her last shot. However, even if she had been well last night, she still would have sought this team out. It had been the co-captain that had saved her, she had been told. The voice on the other side didn't sound very friendly, but perhaps the captain was just tired. It was possible, wasn't it?

"Well? Are you coming in or not?"

It was now or never. Slowly she pushed the door open and stepped inside, letting the door swing back against the door-jam behind her. She walked a few feet into the room and sat down, first looking at the Houndour and then at the Shelgon. Both looked rough. It made her question the decision to come inside, but she was here now. The Houndour was near the wall on the left side of the room, with the Shelgon on right side of the room with her - a meer five feet from where she sat.

"Who are you and what do you want? Come on, spit it out.

Rose did her best to ignore the brash behavior as she took a deep breath to begin."My name is Rose. Last night," she paused for a second to look over at the Houndour to her left, "you saved me. I came here today to say thank you and..." she paused again. She had thought asking would be easy, but with both of them staring at her, it was hard. She didn't like being the center of attention and their gaze was unsettling. As she took another breath to continue, however, she was cut off, her attention snapping to the source.

"And let me guess, you want to join our team? Well the answer's no!"

"No?" she asked in shock, her voice weak.

"That's right, you heard me, no! Now get out!"

Rose was crushed. She couldn't believe it. How could the captain be so callous? She hadn't done anything to her. This couldn't be the end of it. "But...but I --"

"But what? You actually thought you could be useful? Well listen here, you little pipsqueak, you're small and you're weak. What could someone like you ever possibly do to help a Treasure Hunter team?"

Her mouth was dry. This was like a nightmare, nothing was going right."I can get into tight small spaces that no one else can. I could --"

"Ha! So the little mouse can run and hide in a hole? Don't make me laugh! So not only are you small and weak, but you're a coward who would run and hide in a hole where no one could reach you! You're pathetic!"

Rose closed her eyes, tears threatening to flow down her face. This was awful. Not only was she getting turned down, but she was getting berated too. She had come prepared to make an argument for her uses, but she hadn't come prepared for this.

Mortimer couldn't listen to another word, his blood was boiling. It was one thing for Viper to treat him badly, but it was different for her to treat someone else that way. This stopped now! He reacted on pure instinct, charging across the room's length in less than a quarter of a second. He stood over the little Rattata, who was now in tears. He wasn't going to stand there and watch Viper bully Rose."That's enough Viper!" he snarled, baring his teeth."Leave her alone!"

"What the hell's gotten into you Morty? I don't have to listen to you! We've already went around this once before, let's not revisit it shall we? Now stand down!"

Morty growled louder, snapping his teeth in warning. "No! I will not stand down, Viper! I'm done listening to you! In fact, it's time for YOU to listen to ME!"

This time, it was Viper's turn to be speechless. No one had ever stood up to her before. She was stunned, all she could do was stammer. "But..No..but..you - you can't.."

Morty didn't waste any time, he pressed his attack. "So, now you've revealed yourself. You can dish it but you can't take it huh? Not so nice to be on the receiving end, is it? Let me tell you something, you're quick to send someone away - berating and beating them down. In reality, it isn't they who should be leaving; it's you. And now I know why. It's because deep down, you're scared! Three times now you've shown that it isn't I that am weak, it's you. YOU are the weak one Viper! Your name calling, rude, and abusive behavior stems from your fear of those around you realizing that it is they who don't need you, instead of the other way around! You're nothing but a bully that uses a tough bravado to cover up her own vulnerability!"

She couldn't believe what she was hearing. She had to stop it, so she said the only thing she could think of. "You...you wouldn't send me away! You're bluffing! Now stand down before I make you!"

Morty snarled and snapped his jaws again as he took a step forward, embers glowing in the back of his throat. He wasn't backing down, he was pressing. "Go ahead. Make your move. We'll have a go-around right here, right now." His voice was cold, serious, and unwavering.

She had nothing left. He had called her bluff. She wouldn't start a fight, not here, not in the guild house. For once, all she could do was stare speechlessly. Suddenly, she didn't want to be here. She had the urge to leave. No, not an urge, a need. She had to get away and regain her composure. Without a word, she moved around the two and walked out the door.

With Viper gone, Morty moved slowly to stand in front of Rose, lowering his head to her level. "I'm sorry you had to go through that...I meant what I said though. If you still want, you're welcome to stay and be part of the team. Because unlike Viper, I respect others. You want to be part of the team, you don't have to validate yourself. From now on, this team's going to be run my way, so if you still want to join Team Verruckt, I'll be more than happy to have you."
