Melvin had went into the banquet hall where all those lone travelers now young knights-to-be came for one of the meals they didn't pounce on during the trip here. He was famished and ate his fill and went out back to burn the bones. When nothing showed itself, he sighed and went back to pocket a small amount of rations before heading out. There was talk of decent armor and he lacked much of everything aside from his weapon which, as anyone knew, was not remotely the best.
He wanted to be prepared but he also wondered if it was just armor that made the Great Knights who they were. If so, then the person, the body, was a lie and it was simply a fact of who had the most supply. He hoped not or else he would be very disappointed.
Taking Pepper, his noble steed, he started up the path and took the right path towards the rocky path through two hills.

[ Step 1: The trek forwards ]
His family lived on ports. Rocky shores upon crisp waters and then he moved to the colder regions of the north. Mountains and shrubberies were commonplace and even he knew how to travel through them, but this was not the same region and everything was unfamiliar. It had been exhausting just to get to Camelot and now Pepper protested at being lead away from stables and what little hay was still left. Holding her reigns, he lead her up, patting her neck as he looked about for any signs of the gossiped-about items of lore.
As he rose up higher on his saddle, he felt Pepper jerk and then move back. He jerked her back and then rode her up the mountain to a small outcropping to see over the mountain to where he could possibly see up higher. As he moved, Pepper jerked again until she reared up and threw her head back. He fell, and his back dirt and stone, feeling his skull knock against the ground. Dazed, he felt his body tilt and noticed in a second he was sliding off the mountain.
Scrambling, he clung to the side, clawing against moss and dirt until he found jagged stone and pulled himself, but not without hearing a rip of his satchel and the lumps of rations start to fall out.
When he finally leveled his body onto the ground, his hand went to his side.

Sitting up, he pulled open his bag and swore. He might as well have thrown his food to the pigs. At least it would have been of some use to someone.
Securing his satchel to make sure nothing else fell out, he turned to Pepper. "What is wrong with you? This isn't any different than home."
He pulled on the reigns to try and get on.

[ Step 2: The Winding Forest ]
Whatever it was, the sky, the air, or being out in the open, Pepper wasn't having it. She kept stepping back, her reigns dangling about her muzzle as she turned about and away from him.
He moved slowly, reaching out and calling her name, but in a second, he saw her eyes grow wide and knew she terrified. He lunged for the reigns and she reared back, throwing him back and nearly over the cliff again.
When he looked up, he could only hear her hoof falls echoing about the hills as she took off down the mountain.
He could only hope she made it to Camelot safely.
