Nathan muttered under his breath, pulling his tightly wedged katana out of the cranium of the zombie now sprawled across the pavement. It's now been 2 months since the outbreak of the epidemic - 2 months wandering alone and battling his way through the occasional zombie but fuck. It was still disgusting and managed to irk him every time he had to kill one. The 22 year old male pursed his lips as he wiped down the silver blade before slipping it back into it's sheath and continued down the barren road. He had a strong, confident stride that carried his body along in such a way it made him look like a marble figure in contrast with his dirty blonde locks. Nathans past wasn't much before this crap happened. He lived a typical, frat boy life in dormitories and stood in third division of his football team in Nebraska. Where was he now? He didn't have the slightest clue and let his legs carry him anywhere.
May 14th 2038, Nathan remembers clearly huddled in the closet of his dorm, door held locked with a frail desk chair. Outside the door a constant banging - as if someone was heaving their entire weight against it terrified the soul out of him. He grabbed his duffel bag and blindly shoved everything he could while eyeing the door carefully. As soon as he sensed the door was about to collapse, he threw himself out the window, barrelling across the grass painfully. Until now, Nathan considered himself lucky being armoured with such great weapons; it was the sole reason he was still alive. One sizzling hot day in June when he hobbled himself into an empty house after enduring a nasty battle with merely a kitchen knife, he found his holy grail; a dazzling katana above the family fireplace like a shrine of ultimate protection. He really didn't know quite how to use it properly but managed to get a quick, clean slice after copious amount of practice. He then found a glock-25 pistol within the basement of what he assumed to be the house of a policeman. He shot it once at the wall, scaring him to half wits and he took an oath to only use it for emergencies.
Now he was exhausted. The baking July sun feasted on his pale skin and his throat felt scratchy and dry. He guzzled some water from a flask in his backpack. Nathan was awfully hungry; raiding grocery stores wasn't all that of an amusement anymore. The food rotted quickly and he lived on cans of baked beans or soup. Oh how he missed pizzas and steak, he wished everything would come back. He missed Daniel. His soft lips, his brown hair and wondrous green eyes - it pained him to even think of him. They were together for a year and Nathan felt like he was in nirvana and knew exactly where his life was heading. He needed Daniel. He was the only one who could pick him up after a day of crap, who could make him giggle like an idiot and was the only one who made him feel a range of emotions he never felt before. It wasn't until one of those fuckers got to him. Nathan didn't remember what he felt after realizing his death, he just felt numb like the pain overrode itself.
But that was then and he needed to think about now; had to think ahead. He was within a thick forest now, dapples of sunlight spread across the dirt and grass along the forest floor. Nathan didn't have a certain direction in mind but figured he might find shelter to sleep in tonight and hunt along the way as well. His pistol was an awful hunting tool, he had to admit to himself, but it was the best chance he got. He steadily paced himself quietly so he could detect noises easily. After minutes of trailing along the green thicket of trees, he spotted something out of the ordinary. A bright red spot caught his eyes 20 metres away. He inched carefully, his pistol gripped firmly by his hip until a full set up camp came into view. He was puzzled and found himself observing the place. No sign of people but the dead bonfire in the centre had wisps of smoke still ebbing off it. Someone was here recently, but regardless of how still he stood, no one was around. He lowered his gun and searched more thoroughly, more and more evidence that someone was living here being set. Nathan hoped the person left their camp; it was seemingly a perfect place to set for himself in the tranquillity of the forest.

▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ An unsettling wave of silence swept through the woods early in the morning, leaving nineteen year old Theodore Hastings on the lookout more so than usual. Kicking dirt onto the small burning pit of logs and sticks from the night before, Theo briefly ventured back into his small tent to retrieve his rifle and holster that hung off his back. The firearms had originally belonged to his father, Nicolas, along with the two knives that Theodore almost always kept with him for obvious reasons. He could vividly remember the day that he and his father made their escape. Before they left, Nicolas tossed his keys toward Theo and told him to run back into the house and collect as many of his weapons as he could carry while he got the truck started. Theo obeyed without question. His father was a war veteran, and kept a small arsenal of firearms and such in the basement of their home. He probably never imagined that they would ever be put towards this kind of use, though.
The duo had managed to escape without a scratch (or bite) and ended up taking refuge within a small forest where only a few of the infected had managed to wander into. Although, about a month later, they had been attacked by a rather large horde of zombies that they had successfully managed to fight off - Nicolas getting bit in the process. The infection was quick to spread through his body and overpower his mind, and it was only a matter of time before he tried to attack Theodore, at which point he was forced to put a bullet through his skull.
Deciding to take a quick wash, Theodore left his camp behind and walked through the maze of trees towards the nearby stream. He knelt into the damp grass and washed his hands quickly, rubbing them over his face and through his short brunette hair that had become matted to his forehead and the back of his neck due to the humidity. It wasn't long before he discarded his clothes and such and washed himself clean. The wash of cool water felt like heaven considering the heat, although not did he let his guard down. His piercing blue eyes darted to the treeline every once in a while, and he kept his ears strained for any possible noise from the depths of the forest. He soon got dressed again and collected his weaponry, heading back when he noticed a tall figure in the distance who seemed to have taken notice of his camp. Eyes widening slightly, Theodore instinctively reached back to retrieve his rifle and gripped it in his hands firmly as he made his way unseen through the trees and bushes toward the male.
Taking a small, preparatory breath, Theo emerged from the bushes and quietly approached the figure from behind. "Drop the gun and turn the ******** around or I swear to god I will blow your brains out." His hands trembled only slightly as he held his rifle, the threat coming out a little shakier than intended. The man could have easily been one of the infected for all he knew and just hadn't fully transmuted yet - something that Theodore didn't particularly want to perceive.
The sudden sound of ruffling leaves behind him startled the boy and with a small gasp, his forefinger jerked the trigger which sent a bullet flying past the others head, missing his ear by less than an inch. "Oh-oh god!" The panic set in when he realized that he had forgotten to reload the firearm earlier in day—which meant that was the last bullet. Luckily, though, he was also equipped with two glorious daggers that were currently tucked into their sheathes on his hips. Theo wasn't about to start spewing apologies, so quickly he stumbled a few steps backwards with his now useless gun remaining pointed at the male, all the while making sure to keep a safe distance.

The camp was perfect and isolated from any place where the undead may wander. He searched through a duffel bag in the tent and to his pure luck he found a can of chicken noodle soup and a few pieces of bread that wasn't full of mould. He dropped his backpack on the glass and extended his arms to sooth the achiness in his shoulders. The sun was still high but Nathan was compelled to take the day off to just laze around in the thicket of the woods. However, he still wanted to have a good fire for tonight so he forced himself up and rustled through the trees to find a few good dry pieces of bark and sticks for a better bonfire tonight.
The subtle nose of a twig snapping in the distance was heard but he didn't think much of it and proceeded his way to collect more flint for the fire. He was certain of himself that it was nothing. A rustle and a clear audible body was behind him. "Drop the gun and turn the ******** around or I swear to god I will blow your brains out." a voice yelled from behind him, before he could even turn around. "Great. The first person I meet wants to murder me" he cursed, clenching his jaw and instinctively throwing his hands up because goddammit he was not going to die today. Not unless it was a zombie, but by a human being was absolutely pathetic. He let the pistol fall to the forest floor until a loud crack and whizz flew a few mere inches from his ear.
He crumpled his entire body to the ground and twisted his body to get a look of the absolute maniac that narrowly killed him. "JESUS FUCKING CHRIST WHAT THE HELL, MAN?" he yelled, eyes setting on the young male who stood in front of him. He stood a few metres away from him and steadily held the rifle towards him. Nathan shielded his eyes from the piercing sun and stood up as slowly and non-threateningly as he could while adjusting his vision. Okay so he was cute. His eyes were light and his deep brown hair contrasted perfectly against his lightly tan skin. But he was insane to almost kill him. It was as if he never held a gun before and never encountered a human being. Nathan's hands were still in the air.
"I am perfectly fine, christ just put the gun down," he pleaded, trying to inch himself closer to him.

▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ Theodore kept his rifle aimed at the other even when he threw himself to the ground, brows furrowing slightly as he eyed him tentatively. The male slowly rose to his full height before coaxing him to put the gun down, although Theo did not move a muscle. His gaze twitched between the others eyes for a second. He appeared to be an ordinary human being and Theo couldn't detect any signs that would prove otherwise so he slowly lowered the firearm, silently releasing the breath he never knew he'd been holding. "I-I'm sorry, I just thought you might've been one of them." he began apologetically. "I'm not exactly accustomed to seeing people around here anymore." Theo mirrored his movements by moving forward, free hand slightly extended to shake his. He figured it was only right to be friendly seeing as he almost killed the poor man, who was probably just innocently searching for food. "My name is Theodore, but people used to call me Theo."
Used to. His past seemed like such a distant memory even though it was only two months since the outbreak of the epidemic. He had such a life ahead of him, too, and everything had just gone to waste - every single ounce of effort that he had spent his high school career putting into his future. Theodore had been an outcast in high school, an easy target for the bullies. Several times he was thrown into lockers, pushed around in the boys change room and pretty much anything else that jocks could think of doing as their definition of 'fun'. He never let any of that get in the way of his school career, though, which was the reason why he was instantly accepted to the university of his dreams. And then news spread that people around the nation were getting infected and everything went downhill from there.
Standing directly in front of the man, Theodore now had a clear image of how freakishly tall and built he was. He had a good seven or eight inches on him and was rather intimidating with his hulk-like physique. He resembled nearly every single jock from high school and Theo couldn't help but feel nervous. After their brief handshake, Theo moved past the man towards the shelter speaking as he did so. "Uhh, if you were looking for something to eat, I'm pretty sure I have a can or two of chicken noodle soup." he offered, completely unaware that the man had already helped himself to his food. Theo had raided a nearby supermarket a few weeks ago and was surprised to see that the selection of canned goods was still edible. He had obviously eaten many since and was unfortunately only left with two now. Since he cleaned out pretty much all of the supermarkets in the area, he wasn't sure where he would go when he ran out of food completely.
