"We're about to reach a tunnel." He smiles towards me. His voice always filled me with a warm familiarity.
"So what dad?" I chirp back, rubbing at my iching nose with the over-sized sleeve of my blue dolphin sweater. The fabric was soft and comforting like the feeling of a pillow.
"So what?", He gasps, feigning mock offense, "So, they're for making wishes!"
My eyes widen in surprise, "Tunnel wishes? That's not a real thing daddy!"
"Oh, but it is!", His insistence fills me with excitement, but I'm still hesitant on taking the bait. "What? You don't believe me? It's true!"
"Prove it then!"
"Well, when I was younger I wished for an amazing family and now I have you." His deep chocolate eyes melt as they stare into mine, and he boops my nose. "Isn't that proof enough?"
"Well, how do you make it work?", Finally taking the bait, I can't stop my pulse from quickening. A wish? A real wish? All to myself? There was so much I wanted!
"Hmmm", He scratches his scruffy chin while pondering on the thought, "Well, first you have to close your eyes..."
I closed them immediately.
"Then you have to hold your breath..."
My lungs suck in a mouthful of air and I hold it all in my chest.
"And finally, you have to make your wish before we reach the end. You can't release your breath or open your eyes til we reach the end either, whether you finished your wish or not. And you better make it a good one!"
My eyelids get darker as we enter the over pass tunnel and my mind goes blank. What should I wish for? Now that the pressure was here, it was hard to come up with something good.... I know! With a triumphant smile on my lips, I make my wish long before we reach the end, and when the light hits my eyes I open them and release the air in my lungs.
"So what did you wish for?" My father asks, looking at me with crinkled eyes.
"I can't tell you or it won't come true!", He laughs as I say this.
"Can't argue with that"
Happiness, I think answering his question in mind. I wished for happiness.

Her dad has just died and she is going to live with her harsh aunt and cruel cousins.
She has long lost her belief in tunnel wishes.
Now she has no friends, no parents, and no happiness.
On her way to her aunts house in a barren town up state, they come to an over pass tunnel.
Here, she decides to make one more wish in memory of her dad.
Please, let me live a better life... Let me have at least one friend...
And upon opening her eyes, she sees him....
The demon that heard her final, pleading wish...

There are two main characters- Lillian and the Demon.
