A green naiad sat on the edge of Tuatha Ri lake, her transformed tail soaked in the water while the rest of her stayed on the land. There was a sad and lonely look to the female as she stared blankly at the tail she was fanning up and down in the water. A fish afraid of the water, it was unnatural. It was something that Lillison had never gotten over though, she had no motivation or strength to even try to ease her fear, and there wasn't another pae there to encourage her to get over her fear either.

A naiad couldn't be away from the water though, they needed it to survive, a dip in the water was necessary. That's why she was here now, just enough to survive, to give a small amount of life back to her seemingly worthless life. A naiad couldn't be away from the water and Lillison was completely disconnected from the element. It left an endless void in her life that couldn't be filled by anything else, and she knew that. Lillison was just an empty shell now, but what was she supposed to do about it?

She couldn't even be angry about the situation, since she knew it was her own doing. Most pae didn't even both with her, perhaps they could tell there was nothing there, maybe she was as invisible as she felt. Lillison simply went on though, no strength, no purpose, just doing the bare minimum for survival. She was hardly surviving.

In truth, there had not been a storm like the one that had frightened Lillison away from the water, and she knew that. She knew that her fear was not reasonable, but found that taking that first step back into the water was impossible too. Lillison had always been a frightened little fish, but now it was just too much.

Then there was the bright red pae, Pippin, whose personality was as bright as her color and name. She had been enjoying the more lavish life that living in the palace with Hjortur had brought to her, Pippin felt like she was practically royalty herself. Of course, it would feel that way after being alone in the 'wild' at such a young age. However, Hjortur now had about a thousand other children, and Pippin had gone from being the spotlighted princess to just one in a thousand. Literally, a thousand baby naiad in Hjortur's place.

A girl could only take so much of those babies tugging on her hair or her fins and breathing her water, so Pippin had taken to getting out and stretching her tail in less cramped places. Today she had found herself on the surface, a place that she had followed Hjortur to once before. It was such a curious thing to emerge from the water and find a whole other world out there that was... less wet. The lake could feel endless sometimes, but the surface felt infinitely more endless. The idea of actually leaving the lake was preposterous to the little girl though so when she saw the other naiad sitting on the edge of the lake, Pippin began to wonder. She swam to the edge, as quickly as her little fins could kick, even being so close to the edge of the water was daunting.

The other naiad seemed to hardly notice Pippin's arrival, as if lost in some other lake. "What are you doing?" Pippin asked, not at all shyly.

Lillison was still staring intently at her tail, so she didn't notice the arrival of the child. Pae moved about her all the time and never paid her any mind. When the child spoke, Lillison didn't even look up. Instead, her gaze on her tail softened as she blinked a few times. Was the child talking to her? It wasn't long before the child piped up again, asking her what she was doing. Lillison glanced up, that empty look still on her face, but she was looking at the child, and seeing the naiad before her.

"I'm..." What was she doing? What was she ever doing? "I'm sunbathing." Lillison responded her voice sounded dry, both because she rarely spoke and because she was dehydrated. Lillison went too often between trips to the lake.

The child looked confused, "What's that?" she asked in the same bright voice.

Her voice... her voice made Lillison feel so strange. The youthful innocence of a child's voice, she sounded so happy, and it had been so long since Lillison knew happiness. Here she was being depressed around a happy child. She wanted to be happy because the child was happy, but found the feeling impossible to grasp. Now Lillison just wanted to be away from the child, but couldn't get herself to move away. "It is when you lay under the sun, and let it warm you." It sounded like a happy thought, if it was actually what Lillison was doing.

Pippin spent almost all of her time in the palace which was at the bottom of the lake and definitely colder than the surface. That was what she was used to, the surface water wasn't uncomfortable, but it was warm. Looking at the green naiad, she looked uncomfortable. Pippin wasn't sure what it was about the naiad, but she seemed off.

"Isn't that hot?" Pippin asked, glancing up at the sun. She quickly looked away, staring at the sun burned her eyes.

"Uhm..." The adult seemed to hesitate. "You get used to it."

Pippin shrugged her shoulders, not understanding why the adult would want to get used to it. She was a child though and her mind easily flipped to something different. "Do you want to swim with me?" Here she was, trying to get away from all the pae she lived with and she had found that she was quite lonely without them.

"I am sorry..." The green naiad apologized, "But I would rather not." The voice of the adult had suddenly gotten very quiet and soft.

"Why not?" Ever the curious child, she had no problem asking questions.

Lillison felt very uncomfortable now, this child kept asking questions and didn't know how to stop. She bit her lip, not wanting to explain to the child that she was afraid of water. Based off the little girls previous responses, she could only imagine what would be said when Lillison told her she was afraid of the water. Lillison looked back at her tail, floating in the water, and pulled it back, transforming her tail into legs. From the widened expression on the child's face, it was something she had never seen done. "I'm afraid of the water." Lillison said simply as she prepared to get up and leave the child.

The girl was quick to speak up, saying something along the lines of what Lillison had been expecting, "But you're a naiad!" The child exclaimed as if it was the most horrible thing she had ever heard.

"Things happen..." Lillison didn't want to get into this with a child of all pae. A child could never understand the things Lillison had been through, she was too young and naive. Lillison had been naive once too.

"You won't even try?!" the child exclaimed, her voice high pitched.

Lillison frowned, the first kind of emotional feeling she had in a long time. Anger wasn't even an emotion she felt before. The naiad wasn't angry at the child though, she was angry at herself. No, she wouldn't try and she wasn't ever going to try. Lillison was stuck, and she didn't know how to get out of it. Even with this child shouting the simple truth at her. Children were so good at seeing the truth. Lillison looked away now, not knowing what else to say. She couldn't explain it to herself, let alone a child.
