I was thinking of having the main family having decended from a skinwalker and a ??? mare. She'd value combat abilities above all else and pass those values onto her kids.
so the ruling line might be heavy on animal features? and the kids that express those more become the next generation

Another thought on lineage.
While I'm still keen on one original father being a pure walker, I've been re-thinking what traits might be preferable.
I'm starting to lean toward having the ruling class have one leader from each generation who's breedings are fought over. The founding mother would not participate in this, and the children could only fight over the title with members of their own generation.
So Mother x Skinwalker (No fights) Gen 2 (May only fight gen 2s) = One ruling class gen 2 Gen 3 (May only fight gen 3s) = One ruling class gen 3 Gen 4 (May only fight gen 4s) = One ruling class gen 4 and so on...
Since new members of each generation may be born at any time the security of one's place in the ruling class is unstable at best. Any member of a generation may challenge the current ruler for their place, and multiples may challenge them at once in a free for all event much like the breeding fights. A sick member of the ruling class will be allowed a grace period for them to recover before any new challenges are issued.
The ruling class spots may not be inherited, only won. If the generation 2 ruler dies outside of battle with another gen 2 member the gen 2 rank is no longer obtainable.
A pony is only eligible for competing for their generation rank if they were born from a union of a ruler from the generation before and the winner of a breeding fight. The breeding parent is immune from challenges from the beginning of the fight, until the foals are finished nursing. If the ruling parent is defeated in a challenge for their rank after a breeding occurs then the children do not lose their status. However, if the same parent breeds again without that rank then the second set of baskets will not have the rank required to challenge a member of the ruling class.

Members of the head family will abandon small, sickly, or disabled children. Usually without even letting on that the child had been born at all.
Regular citizens may keep undesirable children, but they risk their social status and reputation in doing so.
