ADOPT Dovaa Boy #1

NAME Gideon

GENDER Male

CLAN (Will be Firani)

PERSONALITY

Curious-ity killed the cat, but not Gideon. He's not "a stupid cat", then proceeds to ask what a cat is; why it has fur instead of scales; why doesn't it have wings; why does it always land on its feet - how does it always land on its feet? There has to be an answer for everything and a reason for everything. While this may be something each apprentice goes through, it doesn't appear as though this young one is going through a phase that'll cease anytime soon.

Determined to prove himself, he doesn't ask anyone for help. If given a task, he will do it a hundred different ways if he can't do it correctly. Once done correctly, he will think of and try a couple dozen more ways to prove it can be done better ... like tying his shoes. (He is only eight; cut him some slack!) Some may call it stubborn, some may call it determined. For the sake of this permanent personality trait, we will call it determined until he decides otherwise.

Independent little Gideon doesn't ask for help, but he has no issues asking why something isn't working. It's almost his way around asking for help. If he doesn't understand the mechanics of something, he can ask why it's not working but he has to do it on his own. Proceeding to then try to figure out the problem in multiple different ways until it is done right - hence his determination.

Short tempered runs through his veins, being a child of two Firani dovaa. His auntie Caroyal often calls him a little spitfire and asks if he's actually her child instead of that of level-headed Elyssa. If Gideon doesn't get the answers to his constant questions or if he can't figure something out right away, there may be carnage. (Auntie Caroyal, "Oh, I have seem many a toy go through his bedroom window, let me tell you.") Although there will be momentary spats of items thrown or yelling, Gideon is usually able to tone down his tantrums after a few moments.

Observant is the trait that his Auntie Caroyal dreads. While Elyssa was convinced her child was incredibly smart, Auntie Caroyal was convinced the little devil was mimicking her every move some days. When Gideon isn't asking why or busy trying to tinker with things, he's sitting quietly observing his surroundings - picking up on stories he hears or things people do. What makes them happy, what makes them tick - a little "people watcher".

BACKGROUND

It was a warm day, just like every other day on Eowyn. Although the temperature was typical, the pained screams of a young dovaa in labour made the day not one that she would easily forget. Elyssa, a pure-blooded dovaa from Tukyere, had given birth to young Gideon.

Raised by his mother and his aunt Caroyal, Gideon grew up hearing amazing stories of his father Josyph, a handsome dovaa who fought to maintain peace within Magesc. Unfortunately, he met death early on in his life - a story that was never explained to Gideon, as his mother couldn't talk of it without choking on the lump that would develop in her throat and his aunt told him she'd tell him when he was older. But he was a selfless dovaa, courageous and protective - and Gideon wanted to be just like him. So, he began asking questions about everything; learning as much as he possibly could from the time he woke up to the time he went to bed, so that he could grow up faster and protect his mother like his father had. Auntie Caroyal would roll her eyes at him with a smirk, "You're already just like your father - putting your mother above all else in order to keep her happy, safe and smiling."

Unfortunately, life doesn't always quite workout that way. Elyssa fell sick, then into a deep unconscious state. She never woke up.

"I let her down." Was the only thing he said as Auntie Caroyal held his hand and took him from his mother's death bed.

A month later, Gideon was busy in the living area - playing with a toy … or breaking it rather, so he could put it back together. Caroyal looked back from over her shoulder to a dovaa woman from Astral City, dressed to the nines, hair slicked into a tight bun and glasses sitting at the tip of her nose, "Alright, so just sign here … here … and here."

... "He's all yours."

Not sure about the formalities of the capital, Caroyal got up quietly to let the woman out then turned to Gideon, "Looks like you're stuck with me champ."

Stopping quietly for a moment, he looked up at his aunt and cocked his head to the side, "Why?" A crooked grin spread across his face.

THOUGHTS ON ... The Great Engagement

Gideon doesn't have much of an idea of this great war, being still a young child. However, this would make for an opportune prompt for one of his many "Why?" questions to his auntie Caroyal.

THOUGHTS ON ... The Magescian Races

Orderite

Gideon has only met a handful of them in his short life, and none played a major part in it. However, he admires their bright colours and wings. They remind him of his people slightly, because some dovaa are bright and have wings too.

Oblivionite

Auntie Caroyal often likes to tell the story about how Gideon burst into tears and screamed bloody murder as a baby upon crossing paths with one while out with her and his mother. What she failed to mention was that she had hissed at the oblivionite causing the little dovaa to be startled. As a child, Gideon still isn't the biggest fan of the oblivionite. His auntie says they're nothing but "low life, life sucking leaches that are so bad at sucking life, that's why they're so low lives". (Auntie Caroyal, "Not my best comeback, I'll admit.")

Dovaa

His family! Gideon considers all the dovaa to be his friends or family, because they look like his mother and his auntie.

Hybrids

To him, they're just like the dovaa - part of his family. Since he grew up in Tukyere, he's been around them and to him they are no different. Just some look a little different, that's all.

THOUGHTS ON ...The Dragons and Khehora

Khehora

Gideon's strongest memory of a Khehora was the one his neighbour had. It seemed like a friendly creature - super protective of his owner, though! Once, when he was six, he spotted a feral one just outside of the town boarders; running back to his mother, he begged to have one of his own.

Khehorian

The first time Gideon met a Khehorian, was his Auntie Caroyal's "friend" (Auntie Caroyal, "The one that got away ...") Gideon was so flabbergasted at the thought of a Khehora - who he looked at as pets - becoming something that could walk and talk like him! There was a solid week of "why" questions; not to his mother or aunt, but to her friend. Never saw much of him after that.

Dragons

Never coming face to face with one himself (aside from seeing a handful flying outside in the desert near the village), he has yet to find out the true cause of his father's death. However, he has seen a true form of a neighbouring dovaa. This was the day his first words came out, "Why?"

Hey there! =D

I enjoy Gideon's concept a lot. He seems to have the roots of a vibrant and inquiring little rascal with all the room to grow in the world. :]

One thing that would be nice to (optionally) have just a touch more expansion on would be his personality - I think you set the groundwork really well and I have a good feel for him, but at the same time you only list three traits, and even under "short tempered" it seems more like you're describing him as independent than short tempered (focusing on him not asking for help and figuring out how to do things on his own, etc., instead of actually elaborating on his temper). What sets him off? How does he display his anger? Does he stay angry and/or hold grudges, or is a fleeting thing that is forgotten in an hour?

Quote:
Never meeting one that he can remember...

Though hybrids make up the majority of Tukyere (the only place on Magesc where hybrids even remotely constitute any type of majority), the other races that take refuge there (usually the parents of hybrid children or mixed race couples seeking refuge, friends, etc.) are an evenly mixed basket. I would venture to say it's nearly impossible that Gideon could grow to eight years old in Tukyere and never once see an oblivionite. Now, this isn't to say that he couldn't still be afraid of them and may not know any well at all, but they would be one of the type of faces that he would see in his life in that city.

In a similar vein on the topic of khehora, while it's possible that he has only ever seen bonded khehora, I would think it's also highly likely that he may have seen the occasional feral khehora - or even khehorian, since those can breed with Magescians and give rise to hybrid children - in his lifetime.

You also get to distribute one more stat point to either intel, atk, or def. :] You get ten to start with. 3nodding

Other than that, I think that's all I have for you! He looks like a promising character in the making. =D

I feel about the same way as Uke, as far as crit goes.

The one thing I can add, is that if you want him to dislike oblivionites...maybe have his mother and aunt be racist (or just his aunt) against them. So he'd pick up on their racism and dislike/hatred of the race. He could be less hating towards them and more distrusting/scared of them and it could change as he grows up (either into a firm hatred or an understanding/like...depending on which direction you went with him).

Beauty! Thanks for the critique you two! There's so much information to learn, I had a feeling there'd be a few things I missed. =] I'll spruce him up and iron his concept out a bit more!

Made the suggested edits, which were great by the way! I really think it helps give Gideon and his Auntie Caroyal more of a relatable feel. =3
