*~::Apartment #101: Oshu City Residential District::~*
[Kakyo Kaido and Kotori Kaido's Home]

Owners of the largest apartment in an otherwise small, low-budget complex in the residential district of the city, the (relatively) recently-married Kaido Family has lived here for the last year-plus. A simply decorated home, a simple look around tells you who has control of the situation within the house...wedding photos are on the mantle, the bedside table in the bedroom, everywhere you look...and the neat, feminine decor speaks to the simple-yet-cute tastes of the lady of the house. In fact, were it not for the photos and a few scattered items (a coat hung over the back of a couch, a scarf on the kitchen table)...all of which likely to be picked up soon (or else, she might say)...there would be little evidence indeed that a man lived here.

This is the home of the man called 'Boss Kaido' and his lovely young wife, Kotori. Though the city outside is in chaos, the mornings her are ever-the-same...a simple, married life for two people with some hint of destiny between them.

"I have the most loving, beautiful, understanding wife in the world...okay I said it, honey, you can stop poking me now, all right?"

Noise. ******** noise. All throughout the house he could hear the noises of that damned woman with her boundless morning energy rumbling about. What with the music turned up loud, the loud, only slightly off-key singing, and the sizzling of the ham on the pan in the kitchen, he could barely hear the low fwish of the water rushing from the sink and over the end of his toothbrush to soften the paste between the bristles before he plunged the rough instrument into his mouth and began to scrub away the light 'morning breath' she had teased him about together on the pillows. She was shameless, really, thoughtless...how could she go around dancing and playing in the mornings when she knew he was still practically sleep-walking out of bed like this? Black rings under his eyes told the story of his trouble sleeping (or maybe he was just naturally dark like that), his lips were curled into a dull sort of unintended frown, and every joint in his body seemed to be stuck together with an adhesive that cracked and popped as he slowly fought to get motion back into them. His eyes were hazy as he looked into the steadily-steaming mirror, and he wondered what in the world he was thinking when he got himself into this arrangement? Why would he ever submit to this sort of life, bound in this apartment to such an irritatingly early bird?

...Well that, of course, was because he was in love with her. And she was his darling, beautiful wife.

And no matter how much he complained about the noise in the mornings and lamented the energy with which she attacked a day that he would rather spend curled up beneath the sheets of their bed, he would never, ever wish to be anywhere else in the world when he opened and closed his eyes than right next to that woman dancing and singing and irritating the daylights out of him right now. She was his lynchpin in this life, his love, the person who dragged him back out of the darkness after that day and made him into the semi-respectable person that he was now. Sure, he still wasn't what you would call an entirely upstanding citizen, but at least right now, he had a purpose...a reason for living, a reason for fighting, a reason to get up in the mornings despite his haze and go through his day, in the words of a certain little demon he did not yet know, like a BOSS. And that reason was currently on the tail end of creating a delicious breakfast for the two of them to provide energy for all that was to come...yes, there was a whole lot to come today, tomorrow, the next few days. At long last, the city was changing...the window was opening for the first time since that coup to actually do something about the darkness threatening to infest every alley, every corner of Oshu City.

One way or another, he would make this city safe again...for himself, for his beautiful wife...it was justice. And more importantly, perhaps, it was revenge. His eyes flashed dangerously in the mirror at the thought, his lips curling faintly into a smirk around the toothbrush as it worked.

"Jian Lin Kuei...I've finally got what I need to take your smug a** down..."

"Got you!" Arms slid around Kakyo's toned chest, as she nuzzled into his back. Giggles bubbled out of the young woman's lips as she tilted to the side to steal a little peck to her husband's cheek. "Good morning, darling... You are just in time! Breakfast is ready. I was just about to go and look for you in bed, buuuut it is just as fine to find you already up!" It was impossible to miss the grumpiness in his still hazy eyes, but well... it wasn't her fault her internal clock always woke her up before sunrise. And while it was true she tended to make a tiny bit of noise during the wee hours of the morning, like he liked to complain about... Kotori at least tried to let him sleep longer. A few hours at least...after all, she didn't want to have breakfast on her own. And she didn't want him missing whatever important business he had for the day.

"I made your favorite..." the strawberry blonde continued, her fingers finding their way to his long hair as she started to brush through it, playing idly. "Do you have plans for today, love? Are you meeting with the guys?" The other hand reached around over to the sink, grabbing the hairbrush and starting to brush through the bushy locks. She loved brushing his hair...brushing away the tangles ...feeling it between her fingers....Sadly, it wasn't something he would let her do frequently... so it had to come to surprise attacks like today's to actually try to tame down his dark mane. A smile curled on her lips, as blue eyes looked at him from the mirror playfully.

She liked mornings like this one... their little daily ritual...and she wouldn't change it for anything in the world.

Think of the devil and they shall appear! ...No, not Jian Lin Kuei, but his adorable wife! Even his grumpiness had to give way slightly at the feeling of her wrapping him up tight in her arms and stealing a little kiss from his cheek, her smile bringing some light to an otherwise dreary morning. Sure, he could grumble a little about how she managed to stay so upbeat this early in the morning and perhaps say something about the volume of the music and the singing, but...more than himself, he wanted this woman to be happy. And if making his mornings all the more chaotic with her sounds was what it took to keep that smile on her lips, then...wait, was she going for the...?! Damn it! He'd let his guard down! Tricky, lovable woman...

"Not the brush, baby," he finally croaked out some of the many words that kept dying in his throat as he appreciated the sight of her hugging him in the mirror, his lips curling into a sleepy half-smile in spite of himself as she seemed thoroughly enraptured with what she was doing, "If you do the whole thing, breakfast will get cold. And since it's my favorite, I'd like to eat it while it's still hot," he voiced his concerns, but knew they were slightly overblown and likely to fall on deaf ears. When she got that look in her eye of peaceful contentedness, he knew it was pointless to argue. Besides...that sight in the mirror, standing together with his wife in the early morning, seeing a smile that easy and carefree on her lips...he'd let a thousand breakfasts go cold to see it over and over. Still, the morning haze kept him from settling perfectly into the morning ritual, which was...itself...probably part of the ritual itself. He shifted oddly as she brushed through the dark hair, pouring a cup of water into his mouth to wash out the last of the toothpaste and finish up getting ready for the day. Did he have something to do today? They all did...all of the Vultures. Today was a big day...

"Today...I'm going to the warehouse to meet with everyone. I heard some interesting rumors going around town last night," he began slowly, trying to figure out the best way to say what he wanted without causing his wife any undue worry, "They say that a big-wig in the Lin Kuei just left the city. Not someone you would know, but an important figure in the underworld. But that's not the best part...I know you've heard the name 'Sakurazukamori' before, right?" He knew that she must have. For a few years, the name had been known throughout the city...and she knew the story that he had told her of that night, when he and his friends had been...that he had been the one who wanted to spare them. He knew how powerful that man was.

"They say that he's still alive..." he explained with that small smile that would tell her with certainty that something big was brewing, even if he didn't say exactly what, "...And they say that he's still living somewhere in the city..."

"Alright, alright. Just...this once more...and I'm....done!" She struggled with one last tangle before setting the brush aside, letting it rest for the time being. After all, he had a good point... she couldn't let the breakfast she cooked with the sweat of her brow and all the love she had for him go to waste! They would eat... and afterwards (as if he would actually let her) she'd continue with her mission! Blue hues shifted back to the mirror, looking at him as he continued with his routine, listening carefully to what he said. "Mhm? Rumors?" Her fingers brushed down and up his back softly before she moved over to fix the towels that weren't in their place by the rack. She wasn't a neat freak, but...seriously how hard was it to put the towel in its place after using it?! Still, she let it slide this time, the information given to her catching her attention.

"I remember..." Even if it was said in a casual tone...just the memory of what had happened to him a couple of years ago brought out a hidden anger in her. He had almost died that night... The Lin Kuei had done that to him... and she almost...almost want to agree with his idea of revenge. Though, the fear of what they were capable of always won over...

If important figures and ghosts from the past were showing up in rumors though... then perhaps... he wouldn't be alone. Perhaps now... he could let the fighting to them. Perhaps then... he could keep away from harm's way...and stay with her.

Still... Kotori managed a smile, the hope her husband had that the tides were changing making her hopeful as well. "Those are great news! You aren't thinking of... looking for him? Do you think he''d join the fight?"

He was grateful when the feeling of the brush pulling through his hair subsided, if only because he would be loathe to admit to her, ever, that the feeling was actually fairly pleasant most of the time (encouraging her would only mean more morning sneak-attacks, and he didn't have enough time for that as it was...well, probably). Still, for all his gratitude he didn't miss the way that her hopes seemed to shine at the mention of someone who might be capable of taking over the fight in his stead. He hadn't intended for it to sound like he might withdraw himself, and she hadn't said anything to give voice to her silent hopes, but they knew one another well enough that he hadn't missed that glimmer in her eye that reflected her inner worry about him. When he had told her the truth about what he was doing...most of the truth, at any rate...she had given him a tongue-lashing of a lifetime. She had given up almost everything to protect him from the Lin Kuei, but now he was diving right back into the danger zone by his own free will in order to bring some order and stability back to the city. No...it wasn't just that...it was his need, his drive for revenge that he leaned upon to try and purge the dark memories of that day when he had lain surrounded by bodies, soaked to the bone in the blood of his best friends. Any sane man might have wanted to avoid the Syndicate after that moment, but all he had thought about was his guilt over surviving, his failure as a leader leading to so many deaths...and the merciless hand that had taken the lives from them.

She didn't want him to fight...she hoped that if he could convince the man to join, perhaps he wouldn't fight...but that was a step too far for him to make any promises. He wouldn't fight...when he knew that the job was done. He wouldn't steal, sabotage, or rob the Lin Kuei until he had taken back all that they had stolen from the city of Oshu. He wouldn't stand by quietly while they defiled this place where he had grown, where he had met and married his one and only true love, and he would make it a safe place to raise a family again...and perhaps, one day, his own. She understood that, but he understood why she could never completely accept his actions in her heart-of-hearts...why she wanted, needed him to come home. It was the one great wall that never seemed able to fully come down between them. But they had built such a grand home around that wall...a foundation that would never crumble. Of that, he was sure. And yet...

"If he's not with the Syndicate, then they want him dead way more than any of us. At least, he ought to be able to benefit from our strength," the boss explained as he dipped his finger into a small pad of black make-up and began putting the finishing touches on his signature look, eye shifting to the corner to watch his wife with a gentle gaze...that loving look only reserved for her, "This isn't the type of city you can survive in on your own, anymore. Not unless you bow down to the Almighty Altar of Jian ******** Lin Kuei. He needs us..." He let his voice trail, deciding to go with his better judgment against finishing that thought with, 'Though we need him a whole Hell of a lot more.' The important thing was that it was an opportunity...and a sign that people against the Syndicate were willing to stick their heads up above water again. Even if the threat of the Starless Dragon smashing them back down right away was looming over their heads, if enough threats popped up and joined hands, maybe...just maybe...they could take a chunk out of those sons of bitches after all.

"Come on, Kotori," he smiled as he wiped his fingers clean in the spray of water in the sink and dried them, finished at last with his slow process of dragging himself together to face the day, "You said you made my favorite, right? Then, I can't leave my beautiful wife's breakfast waiting any longer, can I?"
