A lot is to be said of today's media-run world. It's entertaining. It can be educational. It can open up new worlds to explore. The internet, music, movies, tv. It's all over the place! With such a huge economy based on media, you'd think minority groups would get more representation! Right? Wrong.
What are your thoughts on our lack of representation in media? Do you know any good movies, shows, etc that do represent us? Any trans* actors, artists that deserve more attention?

So far, there have been two instances I've read about lately.
One of them is the inclusion of a trans male character, Krem, in the new game "Dragon Age: Inquisition". When you open up dialogue with his comrades, not only does he talk of it, but his commander does as well, going as far as to say that Krem is a real man.
Here's video footage:
Plus the fine folks who make the Magic card game have made this: http://www.newnownext.com/magic-the-gathering-trans-character/01/2015/

Since people are only recently getting well-adjusted to seeing straight-up homosexuality on television, I think it'll be a bit longer until trans representation becomes more widespread in media.
It's not really trans, but I think that the cartoon Steven Universe has done a really great job representing gender in a character where a boy and a girl fuse into the same being; not only do they not refer to this character as female, since that's how Stevonnie appears, but they disregard pronouns at all. I can't really describe it well, but I think it's an especially good example not only in media, but media targeted towards children, that delineates sex and gender.

(sorry, this slightly off topic, but trans isn't spelt with the asterisk on the end any more! there's a cool article about why right here if you'd like to do some reading!)
i can't believe we got this far without mentioning laverne cox's incredible role in orange is the new black! she's an amazing representative in the media :~) there's also a really cool movie coming out soon called boy meets girl that is staring a trans woman played by an actual trans woman (!!) this is a super cool step-up from the dallas buyers club. hopefully it can only get better from here!

i TOTALLY agree about steven universe! rebecca sugar canonically doesnt use pronouns when talking about stevonnie, pretty much confirming that stevonnie is non-binary! SO COOL. also the gems themselves totally count: though they present as female, they don't have gender designations amongst themselves. i really hope we can get more cartoons like this in the future!

I recently watched a Finnish movie called "Kerron sinulle kaiken" ("I will tell you everything") where the protagonist was a transwoman meeting a married man with family, struggling with his wife and so on. The protagonist, Maarit, also has a teenager daughter and is divorced from her ex-wife, who made it very difficult for Maarit to see her daughter.
- I loved that no one in the movie asked about protagonist's genitals and they also showed a man using outdated/misleading words and that guy was corrected by Maarit. I'm not sure but I think it was attempt to show that trans people are part of Finnish society, since most of the footage about transpeople on TV here, whether documentary or fiction, is from US or UK, etc. so it appears kind of distant on, hmm, social level I guess.
On the other hand I'm not that interested about movies with their focus on relationships and stuff, I'm too fantasy/horror/action oriented, so the movie itself was kind of "meh" for me. sweatdrop

okaky, but why have i never heard of this cutie before!?? Ruby Rose
she'll be starring in the next season of orange is the new black and that makes me so happy!!! biggrin
Well recently the trans* community has had some spotlight in media, but I still believe we're not represented enough in films. I really get pissed off when shows have cis actors play transgender characters... However there is a film recently released that has a transgender woman... playing a transgender woman! Can you believe that? ...Haha, it's actually really good. It's called Boy Meets Girl. Another series which is really informative about the lives of transgender peeps is True Trans. I watched the whole thing and I got a little emotional... redface

A bit pissed on the fact that Bioware decided to hire a WOMAN as the voice of Krem. Come on. The actor should have been a trans man or a cis man. I mean, seriously now.
Being different in any way is still something that society isn't always very accepting of. Being trans is generally considered as a controversial subject too, along with things like homosexuality etc. They've (in my experience) had a mainly negative image from the media - especially in regards to religions like Christianity. The media is very, very slowly cutting some slack to people who're slightly different, like the show glee. Yes, I do realise a lot of people hate this show (I know I disliked it a few years ago,) but it portrays so many 'minority' groups in a positive light. Everything from the famous homosexuals, maybe slightly incest twins, to both a trans-man and trans-woman (I think). I still think it's a bit of a weird show, and slightly cheesy at times, but I love the fact that they're about acceptance and fighting, even though they're different and people don't always like them for it.
Just thought I'd mention glee, as I hadn't seen anyone else do it...

I know I've already posted about Steven Universe - and, for those who've not watched the latest episodes, SPOILER ALERT - it's recently been revealed that one of the characters was actually two different girls fused together because they cared for each other so much.
Though the two are not explicitly stated to be in a romantic relationship, and it is unlikely to be, seeing as it's typically unacceptable for homosexuality to be expressed in children's cartoons, their closeness to the point of never wanting to be apart is highly indicative of their feelings.

Best example I can think of is in the game Catherine. One of the major characters is a trans woman.

I remember reading about her. The waitress was named Erika, right?

Yup. That's right.

Supposedly Samus (from Metroid) was also suppose to be a trans woman. My main issue is how she was came out to be trans, they called her a transmisogynist slur and kind of laughed about it.
She's still trans nonetheless, poorly executed on how it came out, but representation is representation-- regardless on how bad it was.
