o3:: BIOGRAPHY
Name :: Gabriel Golightly Alias :: "Gabe" Age :: 16 Gender :: Male Powers :: Animal Telepathy, Telekinesis, Psychometry, Clairaudience Aura :: Navy (#011054), low frequency, gold (#D6AF00).
Appearance :: Think nerdy newsboy. Average height, with a slender, lanky, wiry build. Very angular. Curly mop of dark brown hair cut shorter on the sides and longer on the top that regularly falls into his face. He has a surfeit of freckles covering his nose, arms, and legs. Regularly seen wearing a white thermal shirt, tight jeans, suspenders, and high-top sneakers. He wears square-rimmed glasses due to his less-than-perfect vision. His eyes are golden-yellow in color.
Personality :: Gabe is what most people would call "awkward". Because of his upbringing, he wasn't well socialized as a child. When interacting with others, he has a tendency to miss social cues and it can be difficult for him to relate with others. He struggles to recognize emotions in others and has even more difficulty dealing with his own emotions. Because of this, he will often change the subject of conversation or bury himself in a project as an escape mechanism.
He has an extreme love and fascination with electronics and will tear apart any gadget he can get his hands on to figure out how it works. It was a memorable day in the Golightly household when David came home to find a six year old Gabe gleefully taking apart all of the components of his work computer. He has a love for details and will often miss the bigger picture. This eye for detail extends to other people, but his lack of socials skills makes this more of a disadvantage. For example, rather than recognizing that someone is upset and trying to comfort him or her, he is more likely to comment on their red and puffy eyes. This certainly doesn't make him popular while meeting new people. If a personal comment doesn't throw a new acquaintance off, his tendency to talk in depth about some random subject or another usually will. He has accidentally offended people on more than one occasion. He will feel genuinely remorseful and sincerely apologize for doing so, but only if someone bluntly points out his faux pas to him. It really takes awhile for people to get to know Gabe, but if they stick it out, they will realize how steadfastly loyal he is and how much of a hard worker he is. He will do anything that a friend or mentor asks of him.
Gabe is also what most people would call a complete and utter geek. Along with his love for electronics, Gabe has always had a head over heels love for books. Any kind of book that he could get his hands on, nothing was safe: fiction, self-help books, instruction manuals, dictionaries, etc. Gabe devours them and his innate intelligence allows him to retain and recall most of the information he has read. One major influence on Gabe's life was the discovery of his father's collection of Psychic tales comic books, collected in David's younger days. Gabe became completely obsessed, reading them over and over, and furiously searching for missing editions to complete the whole collection. This has left him with an almost fanboyish obsession with the Psychonauts and he worships the very ground that the school instructors walks on. He may find himself tongue-tied and find it difficult to actually converse in a normal manner with them, but he will do absolutely anything that they ask of him in an attempt to prove himself to them. He works surprisingly well in a group, provided that they are forgiving of his poor social skills, and he is absolutely fanatic about finishing things on time if not early. He is the kind of person to throw himself completely into a project or assignment, barely taking time to eat or sleep, until he is finished with it.
Another fun little personality quirk is Gabe's tendency to be very gullible and to take everything very literally. Sarcasm is almost completely lost on him, as well as the more subtle humor. Most jokes go completely over his head, except for the corniest and the worst puns. Gabe adores puns though and in attempts at proper socialization, will often throw them into daily conversation.
Gabe has an intense fear and aversion to fire because of a traumatic event in his teen years (described below). It is very difficult for him to be around psychics when they are actively practicing pyrokinesis, though it is not in his nature to dislike a person just because that is one of their powers. He is absolutely fanatic about fire safety and sleeps with a fire extinguisher underneath his bed. He will avoid fireplaces and campfires as much as possible.
History :: Gabe comes from a very interesting family. Both of his parents mean well and they do love their son, but they never expected or planned to be parents. Gabe was absolutely a surprise to the both of them and they were fortunate to have a very self-sufficient offspring who learned and developed mentally ata very fast rate. His mother is not psychic but is aware of her son's abilities and tries to be supportive when she isn't buried in her work. His father is a psychic and a little more helpful when it comes to Gabe's psychic abilities. However, his father is also very involved in his work studying alternative forms of energy. David and Audrey are both very kind people but a little neglectful. They did their best, but are constantly focused on their own work and projects and their absentminded attempts at parenting made for a rather unconventional family. As soon as he could toddle, Gabe was generally left to his own devices. He spent most of his early childhood exploring the family house and searching any room for any books that he could devour. Despite his lack of a close relationship with his parents while he was growing up, Gabe never resented them for it. He loves his parents dearly in the same distracted way that they adore him.
Because of his physical build, large glasses, and poor social skills, Gabe was a magnet for every bully for miles around. This didn't bother him too much on an emotional level, but he did find their antics distracting him from learning, his favorite things. Coupled with a rigid public school educational structure that was too slow for him made school and absolute nightmare. When the school's mildly concerned guidance counselor suggested online school, Gabe and his parents jumped at the idea, readily agreeing to something that made their son's life and their lives so much easier. Gabe absolutely loved online schooling since he was able to learn any subject that he wanted to at his own excelled pace and he achieved a high school diploma by the age of 11.
The largest influence on Gabe's life happened when he was seven years old. While walking home from his weekly trip to the library with a backpack full of books, he came across a stray dog whose paw had gotten caught in a storm grate. Sensing the dog's pain and distress, Gabe helped the free the dog's paw and the grateful pooch followed him home. Young Gabe called the dog Tucker and begged his parents to keep him. His parents agreed, especially when David noticed signs of a psychic bond building between Gabe and Tucker. This bond only grew stronger as Gabe developed animal telepathy and the boy was delighted that he could talk to his new friend.
As Gabe grew stronger and more confident in his psychic abilities, his father decided to enroll him in a psychic summer camp that he'd heard good things about. David had attended a regular summer camp as a child and thought the experience would be good for Gabe while allowing him to get comfortable with his psychic abilities. So Gabe was enrolled at Whispering Rock Psychic Summer Camp. Unlike public school, Gabe flourished at camp. While it was still difficult for him to socialize naturally, Tucker helped and encouraged him into making a few friends and enjoying the experience while soaking up as much knowledge as he could. Gabe attended camp every year after that, delighting in each new psychic ability that he developed: telekinesis and psychometry, both incredibly helpful in his hobby of tearing things apart and rebuilding them. While at camp, he also successfully completed basic braining and marksmanship after several stubborn attempts at both, and showed a natural skill for levitation, passing with flying colors.
Gabe's life derailed when he was 14. Finished with standard schooling and online classes, Gabe was now assisting his parents regularly with their research and trying to figure out what to do with his own life. While he was at the library one week, his neighbor's house caught fire. It was contained before it could spread too much, but the smoke spread aggressively. An aging Tucker had declined Gabe's invitation to the library and had instead elected to take a nap in his favorite spot in the garage. Tucker inhaled too much smoke and the elderly dog passed away gently in his sleep. Unaware of what had happened, Gabe came home to find his best and closest friend gone. He slipped into a deep depression, holing himself up in his room. He felt incredibly guilty and blamed himself for not being there for Tucker. His parents became increasingly concerned and made several attempts to comfort him. Knowing that a new dog would only make it worse, they brought home a delightful little female cat that Gabe tentatively named Pixel. Pixel, however, had a mind of her own and stubbornly attached herself to David instead and Gabe continued to sink into depression. While he was in this perpetual state of grief, guilt, and depression, Gabe suddenly developed the new psychic ability of clairaudience. This new ability taxed his mental control, and he began to struggle to keep a hold on his telekinesis as well with the result of several broken items and a very confused and scared Gabe.
Now frantic with worry, David and Audrey consulted David's parents who suggested Majesco Academy. Buried in their work, they hadn't payed attention to news about the new school for young psychics. In desperation, they enrolled Gabe, who agreed to attend because of his deep-seeded love for learning and his obsession with the Psychonauts. Upon arriving at Majesco, Gabe threw himself into the new environment whole-heartedly. He loved the classes, loved the facility, and nearly went into a fit of fan-boy ecstasy every time he met a new faculty member.
When the opportunity came up for him to apply to be a Teacher's Assistant, Gabe nearly fell over himself to try for it. The opportunity to work with the faculty members he so admired and to help other students with their psychic abilities became the most important thing for him to do. When he actually made it, it was the best moment of his life besides meeting Tucker.
