                                                              🐦 essence .:. cardinal.
the winter is cold and lonely, but here you are, a little red beacon in the snow.

The common cardinal is a small, hardy passerine (or perching bird). There's a large distinction between sexes - males are usually colored a bright, noticeable red, with a large red crest that resembles a Catholic cardinal's mitre - which is, incidentally, its namesake. They're highly territorial (known for seeing their reflections as other birds and attacking them relentlessly) with clear, whistled songs and distinctive alarms raised at notice of an approaching predator. Notably, they neither molt nor migrate, making them a striking sight in winter's snows.

Apex possesses a cardinal's hardy wings and heavy coat of feathers, and strong, sharp claws - puny on a little songbird but frighteningly-sized when he's, well, on the bigger side for an Aeterna. His face is striped dashingly.

                                                              🐦 ether .:. aspen.
the snow shook the golden leaves from your branches, but even it couldn't hide your white armor.

The American aspen, or white poplar, is a tree with soft white flowers and leaves that turn a brilliant gold in the fall.

The influence of the aspen is clear on Apex: the gold of its leaves are heavy on him, and so are its distinctive black stripes over white bark-colored skin. He also possesses two delicate branches, which resemble antlers: the most fragile-looking thing about him.

                                                              🐦 about .:. apex.
you glare and turn away but somehow you only look like regret.

Powerful and haughty, it's not surprising to say that Apex cuts an intimidating figure. He's tall among reavers, and is strong in body with a deep, reverberating voice - a far cry from the delicate cardinal that birthed him. He thinks his essence and ether were driven to unite by their singular ability to survive the harshest of weather: aspen trees stay strong and lovely through the winter, and thrive after forest fires. Conversely, cardinals possess bright plumage even though it presents a hazard to them, being small songbirds, and weather winters together rather than fling south like cowards. As such he values tenacity and resourcefulness, and is quite a bit fonder of people who bear their hardships with stoicism or cheer. Still, though, he's much better suited to acting in isolation than in groups. That way he doesn't form attachments, and he can reap solely the benefits of any situation.

Make no mistake: he hates to live in debt. He'll return help to anyone who he truly believes intended him help. That doesn't mean he'll do it politely, or that he'll go out of his way to seek people in need. He is a reluctant if good helper: he has that focus about him, but it's hard to get him interested enough to help in the first place.

Indeed he's not quite friendly: he strongly prefers to limit his interactions with other reavers to those who meet his own standards. He likes good reavers, by which he means hard-working ones who don't tire of performing what he thinks of as his duty, even when it seems cruel. There is no time for kindness in death, or for dodging about taking only souls that appeal to a particular reaper's sensibilities.

Still he has his own preferences when it comes to reaping: he has a special fondness for souls who've fought to keep their lives, closing their eyes against the light that his reaping will bring him. They leave the biggest impression on him: he clung to life once, too. (Probably.) This is an opinion that largely remains unvoiced, though, because Apex believes strongly in his own sense of higher purpose. It's much more important to bring every soul to the Vocivus than it is to pick and choose according to his own preferences. It's tiring enough work as it is: he can't imagine what'll happen to the souls that get left behind.
who is apex?
