Hello Trainers and Pokefans,
After doing some investigating, I have found out that X and Y are able to communicate with Alpha Sapphire and Omega Ruby. This includes battles and trading, however, there are some limitations to this.
Battling
When battling someone who plays Pokemon X or Y, Alpha and Omega players will not be able to use Pokemon that do not appear in X and Y. This includes primal forms (such as Primal Kyogre) and mega evolutions (such as Mega Pidgeot). Alpha and Omega trainers will also not be able to use new item or moves that were introduced in the new games.
Trading
All of the limitations that exist for battling also apply for Pokemon trades. While there are no new Pokemon (as of yet) that can't be traded. New items and moves can not be traded to Pokemon X or Y. For example, a Beedrill that is holding Beedrillite can not be traded to Pokemon X or Y.
You can read more about compatibility with X and Y here
Also, since it would be a bit much to expect gym leaders and elite four member to have two separate teams for both platforms, they will not be required to have a Gym team specifically for battling X and Y players (though it would be nice of them...).
That's all for now.
