Penny held her head high, wings straight, and walked forward with purpose. She wasn't listening to the cruel names that were being hissed at her from other foals. This was a daily gauntlet after school. She'd tried leaving later, leaving from the back door, and taking off as soon as the bell rang, but some way, some how, the foals always found her, always surrounded her. "Hey creepy! Dig up any graves lately?" "Yo corpsey, you smell like rot again today, do you even bathe?" "You're so gross, I bet you play with dead things at home!" At first Penny had been bewildered by such abuse. She most certainly bathed everyday, even if she HAD been digging up graves! All this because she'd once brought a skull into show and tell and hadn't flinched in dissecting the frogs during science. Really, these children were so childish. She wouldn't admit the constant teasing had been wearing down on her and how she was starting to dread going to school even though she loved it. The flutter was jolted out of her thoughts by something hitting her in the back of the head. Cold mud dripped down her mane and neck. "Hey Penny, how about we bury you, that'll make you happy right?" a colt laughed while others threw more cold mud at her.

Happy Endings was relatively popular in school. People generally liked people who told them about how pretty and talented they were. Flattery worked exceptionally well on people who had lower self-esteem than the flutter himself. The colt found it easy to "be nice" to others. After all, it benefit himself for everyone to like him, even if he had to lie to do so.
Everyday he'd walked out of class confidently and today was no exception. The flutter floated and flew his way out of the schoolhouse with his head held high. Normally he just walked home on his own, not bothering to wait for any of his siblings. He didn't need the company of others, if anything they needed his.
Leaving the school was starting out pleasant. the birds were singing, flowers were in bloom, and the other foals were shouting behind the school house.
...
Huh?
Happy blinked, redirecting his path to see what the commotion was about. Behind the school was his sister and a few of the other foals from their class. His lips pursed as he noted the mud in her hair.
"Penny?" He quirked a brow.

The mud was weighing down the lovely curls in her mane that she'd inherited from her mother and oozed down her legs. A thousand angry tears sparkled in her eyes but she didn't dare let one fall. "That mud is teaming with decay. Who knows how many dead animals and things that dirt has touched!" She said it flatly, hoping the very idea they were touching dead things would put off her bullies. A filly yelped and threw her mud down, rushing into the school house. Well..it'd worked on one anyway, but the others were undaunted. A splatter of mud coated the right side of her face when a voice caused everyone to pause. Penny spied her brother watching the scene with confusion. The filly stuck her chin out and raised her wings back up. She wasn't going to look weak in front of anyone, including her brother. "Go home Happy." she said. "We're just having a difference of opinion back here."

The colt frowned, eyeing the filth in his sister's hair. His wings flapped wildly as he crossed his hooves. He and his sister may not have seen eye to eye, but that certainly did not mean it was ok for people to humiliate her.
"Be quiet Penny, i know what i'm doing," he muttered before turning his attention to the other children.
"Excuse me. Who thought this sort of behavior was acceptable?" The flutter spat, tossing his head angrily to keep his curls out of his eyes. He pushed his way into the group, standing between his sister and the rest of the group. "Did you forget who this filly is related to? Or need i remind you the power of the most popular colt in school?"
"Maybe i should just smear dirt or your reputations since apparently mud throwing is something we do in this class." He snorted and eyed the members of the group that had dirtied his sister. His eyes settled on a pale blue colt and his lips curled into a smile. "For example, Curly-Q, how would you like it if i told the entire class about how you like to eat bugs?"

There was a silence after Happy spoke, broken by a snorting giggle. "OMG, you eat BUGS?" a gold and purple colt said between snickers. "Oh wow..that's so gross.." Several of the other foals giggled a little as the pale blue colt flushed red and tried to shrink away. "H..hey Happy! You promised you wouldn't tell!" he said grumpily and meekly. Taking the moment where there was no mud being flung onto her, Penny shook her mane and body, flicking some of the filth off. She rolled her eyes as her brother spoke "The power of popularity..really..?" she said in a low, quiet voice. Still, with his "power" he'd been able to cow down some of the bullies easily and she grudgingly admired that.

"I know, isn't it?" Happy seemed quite pleased with himself as he pressed a hoof to his chest to emphasize what he was going to say next. "Given my own insect like attributes i found it especially repulsive. But, i'm just such a nice kind of guy that i decided to turn a cheek to the revolting habit."
He glanced towards his sister and flashed a smile. "Now wouldn't it be great if everyone could do the same about any habits and hobbies of others they might dislike? Everyone is different and special, after all." He smirked, crossing his hooves. Perhaps this would teach them that if they found his sister's hobby's so disgusting they were better off keeping that opinion to themselves. At least that would prevent some of the bullying.
"Doesn't that sound good to you Penny?"

"It's..much more polite to keep such rude things to oneself.." Penny said slowly. Agreeing with Happy wasn't something that happened very often and her little brain was boggling at it all. She stood next to him. "I'm sure every phony has things they do that other phony would think are gross or terrible." "Sugar Dream still wets the bed because she too lazy to go to the bathroom." a colt offered sneeringly. "GASP! OH YEAH WELL POP CAP DUTCH OVENS HIMSELF BECAUSE HE LIKES THE SMELL!" Sugar Dream shrieked. The other foals devolved into screaming each other's grossest secrets at the others. Penny's nose wrinkled up and she face hoofed. "And I'm the freak of the school..?" She sighed and glanced at Happy. "Pleased with yourself..? A lot of your information is getting leaked by out in that canopy of chaos, you aren't going to have anything of value left." She pawed at the ground for a moment, putting off what she knew she had to do. "I suppose..i should thank you..for your help.." She cleared her throat and mumbled. "Thank you."

Happy watched with amusement as the other foals became a pack of wild animals tearing each other apart. Just another reason why he was the most superb phony around. He was sophisticated and mature. No one could match his looks or wit and what dirty secrets he may of had were all kept safely locked up.
With a chortle to himself he looked to his sister, "I don't need to know their embarrassing secrets for them to worship me." He winked and tossed his hair to the side. "Just gotta put in a nice word about each of them every now and then and everyone will be eating out of your hand. It pays to be charming."
His wings slowly beat together as he watched the rabble. "Did you really think i was just going to let them get away with that? Your reputation affects mine too after all. Can't have them going around saying i'm the brother of some girl who likes to be covered in mud now can i?" The flutter stuck out his tongue, allowing himself a brief moment of immaturity.

Penny huffed, and shook her head. Well, she supposed that was about as close to bonding the two of them could get. They we're pretty different and they fought a lot but there was still that little bit of love between them that fighting or differences couldn't break. Call it "reputation" or whatever, it was there. She'd never admit it out loud, but she was deeply grateful for Happy's help. "Shall we leave the wolves to tear each other apart? This is already boring.." Penny yawned to emphasize her point, looking unimpressed at the rabble in front of them.

Casting another glance towards the crowd the colt smirked. With a shrug he headed to his sister's side. "I agree. The simpletons are only interesting for so long." He gave a nod in the direction of their house before he started to head off.
