Muggle Studies I

Lesson 1 - Define Muggle

Lecture:
In this class, we will study the Muggle way of life, and how it differs from our own. The term 'Muggle' refers to a non-magical person born into a non-magical family. Maybe you've heard the term 'Muggle-born' before, which refers to a witch or wizard born from a non-magical family. Keep in mind that a Muggle is not the same as a Squib. Both cases result in the person lacking magic, but the difference is that Squibs are born from magical families, while Muggles, as I said, are born from non-magical families. Continuing on, most Muggles are completely oblivious to the magical world, our world, because we separate the two.... Some Muggles do know of our world, however. These are mostly close relatives to witches and wizards in their family.

Key Points:
- The main objective of Muggle Studies is to compare the Muggle way of life to life in the magical world.
- A Muggle is a non-magical person born into a non-magical family.
- A Muggle-born is a magical person born into a non-magical family.
- A Squib is a non-magical person born into a magical family.
- Muggles that know of the magical world are typically relatives to a magical person.

Quiz:

2) A
3) B
4) The most common way a Muggle would know of the Wizarding World is through close relation to a witch or wizard.
5) The main objective of this class is to study the Muggle way of life and how it differs from life in the Wizarding World.

Lesson 2 - Hard Working

Lecture:
As we discussed last class, Muggles don't have magic to assist them in their lives like we do. Think about it. We can use magic to cook, clean, find things, lift things, and so much more. Muggles obviously can't do this. They do a lot of these things by themselves nowadays, and they have machines or tools to do the things that are too difficult for them or that they can't do by themselves. For example, how might a wizard lift a heavy object? They would use the spell Wingardium Leviosa. A Muggle, however, would perhaps work with another to lift the object, or if it was big enough, use a machine called a crane to lift it.

In the past, before machines were invented, Muggles would have to do most things by themselves. They had to start their own fires, even, and they soon built their own tools to assist them in hunting food and building shelter-- but this isn't a prehistoric Muggle society class. This is a class to study how the present-day Muggle lives.

During the remainder of the year, we will be discussing other ways in which Muggles live without magic, the two most important lessons being on Automobiles and Electricity. For now, I'd like you all to start Chapter 1 of My Life as a Muggle, and feel free to ask me any questions you may have about the differences between how magical folk do something and how Muggles do the same thing, or any questions at all, really. There will be another quiz during the next class, as well.

Key Points:
- Instead of using magic to assist them, Muggles have machines and tools to help them do things.
- Before machines and tools were invented, Muggles would have to perform certain tasks by themselves or with the help of another Muggle.

Quiz:
Muggle Studies I Quiz 2

1) Without magic, how does a Muggle perform specific tasks or do work?

a) By doing it themselves.
b) With the help of a tool or machine.
c) Forcing a witch or wizard to do the work or task for them.
d) Both A and B.

2) How would a witch or wizard lift a heavy object?

a) Getting their House Elf to lift it for them.
b) Using the spell Wingardium Leviosa.
c) Using a crane.

3) How would a Muggle lift a heavy object?

a) Using a crane.
b) Picking it up with their bare hands.
c) Giving up and leaving it for someone else to deal with.

4) Who is the author of My Life as a Muggle?

5) Give a basic explanation of My Life as a Muggle.

2) B
3) A
4) Daisy Hookum
5) It is an autobiographical account of the year that Daisy voluntarily lived without magic.

Lesson 3 - Automobiles

Lecture:
During this lesson, we'll be discussing a Muggle machine known as an automobile, or a car. It is a device that runs on petrol, and is used to transport Muggles from one place to another. As we all know by now, Muggles can't use brooms or Apparate, so automobiles are their most used method of transportation, along with similar devices called buses, trains, and even aeroplanes for long distance travels. Though this is a Muggle invention, it has been known to be used by wizards on some occasions. However, because an automobile is technically classified as a Muggle artifact, it is illegal to enchant them under British Wizarding Law. There still are some enchanted cars in Britain, because why not, right? The Ministry owns some that navigate traffic with magical ease, and perhaps you've heard of the Knight Bus that transports magical folks across London. Even Harry Potter and Ronald Weasley owned cars that were enchanted to fit more passengers inside in their adult years.

In the Muggle world, cars are typically viewed as status symbols. Some people would judge others based on what type of car they drove. Many wizards are actually envious of Muggles for their automobiles. Even anti-Muggle families would purchase luxury cars such as Rolls Royces. There have even been cases in which these families have denied ever touching a Muggle artifact, and then were discovered to own one of these cars that were enchanted to fly. It's quite funny, actually.

That's all for today, class. As always, there will be a quiz next class over this lesson. If you have any questions, feel free to ask. Otherwise, class is dismissed.

Key Points:
- Muggles use automobiles as their main method of transportation, as well as buses, trains, and aeroplanes.
- Enchanting an automobile is illegal under British Wizarding Law.
- The Ministry of Magic uses enchanted automobiles to navigate traffic with magical ease.
- Automobiles are viewed as status symbols in the Muggle world.
- Some anti-Muggle wizarding families purchase cars, such as Rolls Royces, and enchant them to fly and enlarge them on the inside, despite the car being created by Muggles.

Quiz:
Muggle Studies I Quiz 3

a) Their own two feet.
b) Automobiles.
c) Alpacas.

2) Automobiles are also viewed as:

a) Status symbols.
b) Homes for small animals.
c) Methods of long distance travel, such as travelling from North America to Europe.

3) Even though enchanting an automobile is illegal, which of these own one:

a) The Ministry of Magic.
b) Some magical folk, even anti-Muggle families.
c) Both A and B.

4) What type of car is most known to be owned by the anti-Muggle families that want an automobile?

5) In what ways do wizards enchant automobiles? i.e. what do they enchant them to do?

Muggle Studies II

Lesson I - Art

Lecture:
Today, we will be discussing art in the Muggle World. We'll be talking about some of the more important works of art of Britain, as well as comparing typical methods to some ways invented in the magical world.

The first piece is Ophelia, painted by John Everett Millais between 1851 and 1852. This iconic painting shows the scene in which Ophelia, driven mad by Hamlet's taunts, falls into a brook and ultimately drowns. Millais's treatment of the model for the painting has become infamous, as he forced the young Elizabeth Siddal to lie fully clothed in a tub of cold water while he completed his work.

The second piece is titled Head VI, created by Francis Bacon in 1949. While in later life Bacon would dismiss his head series was 'silly', his nightmarish paintings inspired by Velazquez's portrait of Pope Innocent IX are powerfully unsettling. The head of the figure is almost entirely taken up by the screaming mouth, for which Bacon found inspiration in hand-coloured illustrations of medical books on mouth disease. Now, can you imagine if that was one of our moving portraits?

That brings me to the next topic. Obviously, these Muggle works of art are not animated. I'm sure most of you have taken note of the many portraits here in Hogwarts Castle, and honestly, this isn't an art class, so I won't go into much detail about them. The subject of a magical portrait is sentient due to enchantments placed on the portrait by the painter. The portrait will be able to use some of the subject's favorite phrases and imitate their general demeanor based on how the subject appears to the painter; however, they are limited in what they can say or do.

Alongside the ability to enchant portraits to speak, there are also several other interesting pieces of art that we can create that Muggles cannot, most of which have to do with animation. These include sculptures and photography. Besides the animation, however, art is art, and we produce it in about the same way as Muggles.

Key Points:
-Ophelia was painted by Jogn Everett Millais and shows a girl drowning in a brook.
-Head VI was painted by Francis Bacon and shows a screaming head missing half it's face.
-Magical paintings can speak and move, but only in the way the artist depicts them.
-Sculptures and photography can also be animated to move and/or speak.

Quiz:
Muggle Studies II Quiz 1

a) John Everett Millais.
b) Billy-Jo O'Donnell.
c) Vincent van Gogh.

2) Ophelia shows:

a) a girl on a swing.
b) a girl in a brook, dead.
c) a man with a chicken.

3) Head VI was painted by:

a) Francis Bacon.
b) Bob Ross.
c) Pablo Picasso.

4) What is a major difference between Muggle paintings and magical paintings?

5) List two types of art that can be animated with magic.

2) B
3) A
4) Magical paintings are enchanted to speak and move.
5) Sculptures and photography.

Lesson 2 - War

Lecture:
"Okay, now we can get started. Today, we'll be discussing a few Muggle Wars and whether or not they had some magical influence in the outcomes. The first war we will discuss is the War of the Roses. The War of the Roses were a series of bloody dynastic civil wars between supporters of the rival houses of Lancaster and York, for the throne of England. After Henry VI attempted to override a power grab by Richard, Duke of York, the fighting began with the 1455 Battle of St. Albans. The Battle of Towton in 1461 helped establish Richard’s son, Edward IV, as king, though Henry eventually returned to power. Edward reclaimed the throne with his victory at the Battle of Tewkesbury in 1471, but his death in 1483 begat more conflict. Henry Tudor finally stabilized the throne after defeating Richard III in 1485, his marriage to Elizabeth of York the following year uniting both houses. What does this have to do with wizards, you might ask. Well, it is a popular historical theory that the War of the Roses began as a dispute between wizarding neighbors over a Fanged Geranium, of all things. For such an intense war to start because of a common garden plant such as that, it's quite ridiculous to think about."

"Next, we'll be discussing the Great War, or World War I. The Great War of 1914-18 began in August 1914. The causes of this war have been debated by politicians and historians ever since. One of the few things that historians have been able to agree about is that the war was the result of many different complex factors working together. These factors meant that the situation in Europe in 1914 was very tense. This in turn allowed one crisis to spiral out of control and spark off a war that killed millions. First, let's understand the two sides of this war. On one side, we have Germany, Austria-Hungary and Italy. On the other, we have France, Russia and Great Britain. The assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand was the trigger that set off the Great War. Franz Ferdinand was the heir to the throne of Austria-Hungary. He was killed by terrorists from Serbia, and even though they weren't connected with Serbia's government, Austria-Hungary declared war on Serbia. Russia and it's massive army was ready to help Serbia against Austria-Hungary, causing Germany to declare war on Russia and France by default. Some say Great Britain could have stopped the entire war if they had convinced Germany to leave Austria-Hungary alone, but Germany was set on helping Austria-Hungary, so you can imagine how that worked out. Great Britain actually played the smallest role in this war, but was dragged into it regardless. In the end, after millions had lost their lives due to failed all-out-warfare attempts and several outbreaks of influenza, the war ended with Austria-Hungary and Germany signing an agreement to leave everyone alone, breaking up Austria-Hungary into a bunch of little countries, and putting Germany in a lot of debt. During the war, British Minister for Magic Archer Evermonde was responsible for passing emergency legislation forbidding wizards and witches to get involved, in an attempt to prevent mass breaches of the International Statue of Secrecy. This did not prevent thousands of wizards from aiding Muggles discreetly and where they could, however."

Key Points:
-The War of the Roses were a series of bloody dynastic civil wars between supporters of the rival houses of Lancaster and York, for the throne of England.
-Henry Tudor defeated Richard III and married Elizabeth of York, ending the war and uniting the two houses.
-It is believed that the war was started over a Fanged Geranium.
-The assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria-Hungary by a Serbian terrorist triggered the Great War.
-Germany, Austria-Hungary and Italy were on one side. Great Britain, France and Russia were on the other side.
-In the end, Germany and Austria-Hungary were forced to sign an agreement that split Austria-Hungary into several smaller territories and put Germany in a huge amount of debt.
-British Minister for Magic Archer Evermonde was responsible for passing emergency legislation forbidding wizards and witches to get involved, in an attempt to prevent mass breaches of the International Statue of Secrecy.
