      Recently Ismene had become restless. She wanted to do something, but she was still very unsure of things. She had been a scholar for so long, what if she failed. What if she died. For all she knew there wasn't a battler in her. Raeoffor felt that it was time for the two of them to finally go on an adventure together, in hopes that it would cure Ismene's restlessness as well as get her back into writing. She hadn't been able to focus lately.

      The two of them had been out and about for two days, and although it was curing Ismene's restlessness it didn't seem to help her writing. She still wasn't in the mood. Plus there was the fact that nothing exciting had happened to them on this adventure. It was mostly just walking around. Sure they had seen a few small animals out and about, but nothing super crazy or scary. She had her mother's dagger just in case, but was starting to doubt she would ever need to us it.

“Got 'im!” said the Orderite archer triumphantly. The Notbjaovin let out a little mewl and slumped to the ground, an arrow in it's side.

“Nice going, sir.” said another Orderite, clapping.

“Yeah, great job, Corporal.”

The archer grinned. “I couldn't have done it without Medrol's help.” he said modestly, inclining his head to the Oblivionite.

“It was a simple matter.” said Raemos, smiling and sheathing his magical wand, “I only needed to track a spot of darkness in a land of light. It was like tracing a line of ink on a piece of white paper.”

The archer laughed. “Don't sell yourself short!” he said fondly, “You were amazing. I'm glad you were around to recruit for this!”

Raemos dipped his head to hide a blush. “I was only in the area.” he said, twitching his tail from side to side.

Indeed. He had only been in the pleasant port town for a few days, gathering supplies and waiting for his ship to take him back to Taliuma. In these days of strife, it would be unexpected for him to have anything resembling a job in Serenia, besides guarding the ferrying of goods and people on ships: His uniform and reputation bought him that much leeway on his beloved land of light, and such tasks prevented him from being sent to Soldul too often, despite the many long term and well-paying missions there. He did go, on occasion, to that shadowy land, but he still felt uncomfortable there and much preferred the brief trips to Serenia's coast and the occasional visit with his sister.

So, when a few friends of his from the Guardians had come into the port town, complaining about the difficulty of their mission, they had found him there, enjoying the sights.

Their mission had been to track down a Notbjaovin, a stalker in the dark, that had been preying upon the Leklan herds of the farmers in the area. But, due to its rarity and stealth, they had had a beast of a time tracking it.

They recognized him from the seige at Tukyere and, after greeting him with surprise and sitting down to catch up, had happened upon the realization that, as an Oblivionite mage, he might be able to help them with their job.

He had accepted and, in the end, had helped them track down their prey, prey which now lay, dead, on the ground.

“Well, we really appreciate it!” said the archer. He was also a Corporal, and a nice Orderite. A good friend, though friend was all he would be – Ever since Cearlan, Raemos knew who was willing to be something more, and who wasn't. “Lets get a drink back in town, our treat.” he said, to expressions of agreement from the rest of his troops.

Raemos nodded, unwilling to go against such a majority decision.

~~~
The Mara had been mostly expunged from Serenia for the time being – either by Orderite hand, or by the claws of Khehora and dragons. Most of them had returned to Eowyn to regroup.
These three, a mage and its guards, were survivors.
Their stone was dented and dulled and lustreless but their attitudes were experienced and mature as they stalked the golden land, seeking out vulnerable targets to take out for their king.
One of the rock mara sounded a soft chime, pausing upon the floating magic that served as it's legs, it's weapon in hand.
“Winged life forms: Detected. Quantity: 2. Status: Unguarded. Query: Orders? Query: Approach?” it said. The other rock mara looked to him as well, waiting for the answer.
The Mage looked in that direction, almost thoughtfully. “Assessing...” it said in it's stony voice, humming for a moment. “Affirmative.” it said finally, drawing magic around it, “Approach at will. Lethal force is permitted.”
“Affirmative.” said the rock mara in unison, starting towards the Orderites. They burst from the treeline to the side, hammers raised as the mage mara scooted a ways ahead and popped out onto the road ahead.
“Inhibiting progress of the life forms.” it said emotionlessly, gesturing with its hands, and, with a mighty rumble of earth magic, raising a towering pillar of stone to block the road. “Escape is futile” it said, turning to face them...
      The pair had been talking about silly things, tracking things mostly, when the Mara burst from the treeline. Both Ismene's and Raeoffor's eye went wide and immediately Ismene grabbed her mother's dagger. But looking at the three Mara she knew it was pointless. There was no way that she would be able to kill all three with the dagger, actually she didn't think she would even be able to kill one.
      She was about to say something when the earth started to rubble and the stone blocked their way. Raeoffor pushed Ismene behind him. Although her mentor was no battler, he did have magic and knew a few spells. Ismene knew they were mostly for defense and not attack though, which was what they needed. From what she understood about Raeoffor he could take one of the Mara, maybe two of them, but not all three. Either way he send a watery attack towards the mage Mara, while Ismene picked up a large rock and threw it. "Leave us alone!" she screamed.
      This was not the adventure she had in mind.
“Does not compute.” replied the mage mara.
The water splashed on the stone armor of one of the mara, curling around it and cracking a part of it off with it's magic-enhanced force – an impressive show of strength for an Orderite and a scholar besides. He probably could take on one of the stone creatures...
Not three.
The stone mara charged at them, swinging it's massive, stone hammer at the Orderite male.
~~~

Raemos stiffened as he felt the ground rumble beneath him, flashing back to the shifting sands of the mara battle. “You may have to hold off on those drinks.” he said, moving into a jog.

“Yeah.” agreed the archer, drawing an arrow, “Soldiers, move!”

They advanced onto the road in time to see the mage mara begin it's attack, metallic magic shrieking in it's hands.

The moment he saw it, Raemos was back in the desert, struggling against the mara for the first time. With a cry, he flared his complicated wings, sending his magic forth and enveloping the mage in gelatinous, semisolid shadow, crushing out it's life and magic before it could react or fight.

Gasping, his blood burning with adrenaline, he returned to reality in time to acknowledge that his fellow guardians were now in formation, facing the two stone Mara.

He turned to assess the situation of the civilians...

      Does not compute? What did that mean? However before she could say anything else the stone mara was rushing towards Raeoffor with his hammer. Raeoffor tired to block the attack, but was a second to late and it cost him his head. Ismene froze, terror coursing through her body as she watched her mentor die in front of her. She was likely to suffer the same fate, and started to accept it when all of a sudden the Mara was covered in a shadow that seemed to be crushing it's life.

      Still Ismene couldn't move, she was replaying her mentor's death over and over in his head while her eyes started at his lifeless body.

      Finally she looked up, more to try and see where the other two mara were than anything else. What she saw made her feel much better. There were Guardians, six of them. She had never really spoken to a Guardian but she knew all about them. They would protect her. She looked at them all, her voice loss to her at the moment, and while they all dressed a like there was one that was different. One that wasn't like the others. He was dark, an Oblivionite?! She had never met one before, and although she knew some of them were Guardians it didn't make her any less surprised.

      Knowing it was rude to stare she moved to look at the two remaining Mara's. Would they run now that they were outnumbered, or would the Guardians have to kill them. Personally she hoped they would die, they needed to pay for the death caused by their comrade.

The older one was newly dead, twitching in a bloody mess on the ground as the Mara hefted it's heavy hammer.

“Target: Terminated.” it clanked, turning to Ismene with it's cold and merciless gaze, “Target: Aqui...”

A magicked arrow sang into a crack in its armor, ice tendrils forming around it and locking the mara in place. The Orderite bowman nocked another arrow to his bow, his face grim. “Take that, you pile of rocks!” he taunted, as one of his fellows came in and smashed at it. It took three strikes to drop it, but it's essence was soon lifting from the rubble of its body, returning to its home and king.

Raemos turned his attention to the lady – an attractive young Orderite clearly unprepared for such an encounter – And ran in to shield her from the encroaching mara, summoning a shield of shadows that buckled and bent under the Mara's attack. “Now!” he shouted, shoving the mara back and locking it in place with it's own shadow. They converged their magic and blade upon it, destroying the stone creature with relative ease.

It collapsed to the ground in a pile, moaning metallically as it's magic was no longer able to sustain it.

“Are you all right?” Raemos asked, turning to the girl.

      She watched as they Mara were killed, fascination in her eyes. For a few brief seconds the death of her mentor wasn't the foremost thing on her mind. The magic that the Oblivionite used was beautiful, and deadly. Her only little skill in magic didn't come close to it. And just as they appeared the Mara were killed and the death of her mentor was brought back into focus. She stared down at his body, unsure of what to do. Although part of her wanted to touch the body, to grieve, there was a part of her that didn't allow her. She was still in panic mood, the small dagger her mother gave her clutched in her hand.

      When the Oblivionite spoke she tore her eyes from Raeoffor's body back to his. Was she all right? Physically she was, and she had him and the other Guardians to thank for that, but mentally? She wasn't so sure.

      "Thanks to you all I am alive. Thank you, if you had come any later I don't think I'd be standing here." she bowed her head with a weak smile that didn't last. It wasn't that she wasn't thankful, it was that she was not at loss. What did she doe with Raeoffor's body, she couldn't just leave it there. What would she tell his family? She had been there and stood by while he was killed, helpless to defend her friend and mentor. Would everyone blame her?

“Check the area.” ordered the archer. His soldiers – not all men – nodded and followed his command, not without a few sympathetic looks in Ismene's direction. It was odd that the Oblivionite among them was comforting her, but he seemed to be doing fine and, in the Archer Corporal's eyes, there was no need to step in. The priority, thus, was making sure no more of the stone bastards were around. He watched Raemos, though, ready to step in if the Oblivionite needed help with the girl...

~~~
Raemos studied her for a moment – she did seem alive, yes, and uninjured besides. His gaze traveled to the dead adult. He took off his cloak – worn against the and covered the body with it, despite the stains his cloak would receive. Stains could be washed out. Memories could not.
“We were doing our job.” he said, finally, turning back to the girl, “There is no need to thank us... though I am glad you...” at least “are safe...” he hesitated, “Where were you and... he... going?” he asked, “We would gladly escort you to your destination.” he said softly, “If you wished it.”
      She watched as she soldiers went to check the area. Before this encounter she had believed all the Mara to be dead. Sure she knew that a few wandered about, but she had never thought that she would run into them. Now she was worried, where else could they be hiding?
      Raemos's movement caught the corner of her eye and she turned just in time to see him cover Raeoffor's body. Yes, that was what she should have done in the first place. But she was still in shock and the right thing to do in any situation eluded her.
      An example of her loss of manners was that she knew she should introduce herself, give her name to the man talking to her. But she didn't, more because she simply forgot she should than any rudeness on her part. Yes he was different, and she wasn't use to seeing an Oblivionite, but at the same time she had been reading about them all her life. Some were good, some were bad, just like her people. And if he was a Guardian than that meant he had to be good. Right?
      "Um... I'm not sure. We are scholars, he was taking me on a little adventure to try and spark my interest back up. I don't think that he had a real destination in mind..." she trailed off, aware that she was rambling. However the offer of an escort was something she desperately needed. Now she was alone and aware of the dangers out in the world, and aware that she was pretty much helpless. "I would be very thankful if you would take me home. And help me with his body..." her eyes went to the coat on Raeoffor's body as she was still unsure what to do with it. She had never seen a dead person up close before.
Raemos put a gentle hand on her shoulder. “Of course.” he said, his tail flicking at his Orderite comerade, “Of course we shall escort you home.”
“Yeah.” said the Orderite, agreeing, “We'll transport him respectfully, don't worry.” He gave the Oblivionite a shrug as his soldiers returned – no other mara in the area, they reported. He started giving orders to his men, arranging for transportation of the body and such.
Raemo's focus was, however, on the girl. “How far are you from your home, miss...?”
      At his touch she stiffened. She wasn't use to people she didn't know touching her. "Thank you, I appreciate it." she gave the soldiers her mentors address and the name of his wife who would have to be notified. She would go by the house as well, but only after she talked to her father and got herself together. She wasn't going to talk to Raeoffor's family until she knew exactly what she was going to say.
      When Raemos asked her how far from home she was she had to think. How far was she? They had been out for two days, but they had been taking their time. "Ismeme." she said, remembering her manners only when her name was asked for. "I'm not sure really. I live in the city." she offered. Hopefully he would know how far that was, and in what direction.
Im sorry XD My posts are slightly uninspired... hopefully i'll get better too
The city. Raemos drew back. He could not enter Ashen city – his wings and tail cursed him to remain at it's very periphery, the distance allowed to him by his uniform and alliances. “That is a few days away.” he turned to the archer, “Correct?”
The Corporal nodded. “If you don't mind a detour here or there, it shouldn't be more than two days travel...” he looked at Raemos. They both knew that the situation had become complicated.
“Mmm.” Raemos said, “I am Corporal Medrol, and this is Corporal Kassel. We will ensure you reach home safely.” He bowed, “We should start for those destinations immediately, if you do not mind.” his voice softened. “If you need rest, however... we can wait. There is a town not far...”
