color=orange]A Spooktacular Story!
I have a tale to tell you, before we feast, of a man who became his beast.
He was a wherhandler, solid and true, loyal to the weyr he served in with his burly blue.
They sought out wrongdoers and brought them to justice, though sometimes that was a brutal and final rest.
They stalked criminals under the moons, amid the noise of wherry croons...
Hmm. They were bringers of justice... yes... until one day. It was a stray blade and unlucky chance that took the blue's life.
The handler was alone, left to groan, to bemoan his companion's fate. He was expected, in time, to take another, and he faced this expectation with hate.
None could replace his blue so dear, now that those fierce hearts were no longer near: but woe be he, to let the wrongdoers run free.
So he ran into the woods, and for a time they thought him gone for good.
Soon they heard tell of a great, black, unbonded wher who tore the throats from criminals, careening through the weyr at night, his bellow striking fear in the hearts of the wary.
The hunts of the weyr tried to track them, but always, they were confused, for the beast's path ended in a human's trail, and faded into the forest's scent.
One day, though, the hunt caught the beast, it's eyes blazing red as it snarled at the whers surrounding it. They snarled back and moved to attack, but their attacks, though fierce, did not even seem to bruise it's ebon hide.
It roared, and changed, it's form bipedal, like a man's, but its eyes, teeth, and claws that of a wher. It roared again, of pain and anguish beyond the physical plane, and with a lunge, crashed through gold, bronze, brown, and green wher alike before escaping to the woods.
No person in the weyr wanted to enter the woods now, for now they knew a beast beyond reason lurked there. A young candidate, innocent and good of heart, wished to prove his worth to his squire, and so he took a blade from the armory and braved the woods in the day.
He came upon a man in a clearing, naked and asleep, his mouth red and stained with blood. Wher tracks led to him, and stopped at him.
He woke the man, thinking that he might be hurt, but the man swiped at him, glaring at him with the fierce, red, faceted eyes of a wher.
Bloodied from the man's nails, the candidate slashed at him with his sword, striking the man down. As the man fell, he became a monstrous thing, part wher and part human, before fading away into black smoke.
The candidate returned, victorious.
The truth of this tale is that innocence, bravery, and purity win when justice has been twisted and corrupted... but, my friends, the tale is not done, for even bravery can be corrupted...
As the candidate found out when evening fell, and he, too, began to change...

A Spooktacular Story!
It is said, in the days before our grandfathers, a terrible beast had begun being seen whenever a clutch was laid at the High Reaches. No one knew what it was, but drudges swore they saw shadows moving that could belong to no human, dragon, flit or wher. The whispering wasn't confined to the drudges, for you know how the like to talk. Soon enough the hushed whispers made their way among many of the craft halls. It was the first few days before Pheneth clutched in turn 153, that others started reporting sightings of a mysterious shadow that seemed to lurk around the sands.
Candidates, ever curious, didn't believe the little whispers they had heard. They slipped out of the candidates barracks a few nights before the clutching to go have a peak at the eggs and see if they could see this 'mysterious being.' Their footsteps echoed through the halls of the Weyr on the unusually quiet night and made their way to the sands. They knew if they got caught, they would be in a heap of trouble. "All the more reason to not get caught." They said. Weary heads peaked into the sands. The heat warmed their faces while the rest of their bodies began to get chills. Nothing was visible other than the gold and her clutch. But then, almost like a blur on the edge of their vision, they saw something sneaking towards the sands. It was black as night, the edges not seeming confined as it seemed blurry and it moved with strange disjointed motions.
Each of the candidates gasped and pointed as if they didn't think it would hear them. But it did. It's head snapped around, in place of eyes it looked like two rubys and that was all they could discern about its appearance. It stalked towards the eggs. Quicker now. As the anxiety of the candidates started growing, it seemed Pheneth could sense them and started rousing from her sleep which seemed to put the thing into a frantic state. Eggs were moved from their position on the sands as it seemed to know exactly what it was doing like it had made a plan. It strode right up to the gold egg and snatched it in what could only be described as arms. The candidates gasped and ran away to try and tell the candidate master.
Pheneth's gold egg was never recovered, nor the thing seen again. Some blame the candidates, as the thing didn't seem harmful until it was caught by the candidates. Some say it would have done it anyway. But one thing was clear. There had been something that had stolen Pheneth's gold egg.
((sobs, I tried! D: ))
