So a few different things happened. We started selling vegan smoothies at work and I'm interested in how the vegan protein is made of cranberries, peas, and hemp seeds. I have it in my Smoothie every day and it's like my lunch. Not hungry again until dinner. I'm already a vegetarian so going vegan wouldn't be that extreme for me. I recently saw some stuff on Facebook that got me into the last video. I am really wanting to go vegan now.

The article title pretty much sums it up, but you can read more if you like.

Study suggests milk doesn't strengthen your bones - it ages you instead.

This video is 4 minutes but you should at least watch long enough to see how old she is. biggrin

Raw Vegan Diet Is Woman's Fountain of Youth

Then, I watched this episode of Oprah. I'm gonna link it but it's 45 minutes long. So if you don't want to watch it it's okay. It's a little graphic at parts but I've seen a lot worse on PETA videos.. but if you haven't seen animals in a factory you should skip that part or not watch. Even the meat eaters had agreed though, we should see where our food comes from.

What do you guys think about being vegan?

I already know for a fact I could never be a vegan. I don't have enough willpower in me to give up meat.

See, I was lucky because I was raised not to eat meat. I had no problem giving it up again. But I think if I were raised eating meat, it would be a lot harder. Dairy products/eggs on the other hand.. we were not vegan so we had milk and cheese and things like that. We didn't eat eggs but I got addicted to them after moving in with my mom.

In the Oprah episode a few of them said they would be "vegan-ish", including Oprah. I may do the same. They all reported feeling better, having more energy, and one guy lost 11 lbs in one week going vegan!! The thing is, I don't really think it's wrong to drink milk or eat eggs if the animals are well cared for. Like on a small, family owned farm. The farmer feeds the animals, gives them medicine when they are sick, maybe even brushes their fur. He cares for them and in return takes their milk/eggs. But this is not realistic of where most stuff comes from. Some of these animals may have never seen grass or the sun. :/ Many kept in cages instead of a fence. The way we treat animals is just wrong. I want to try and find a local source of dairy and eggs. I already buy cagefree chicken eggs but I question my milk. It's organic, but they don't speak of how they treat the animal. Another long term goal I have now is to have my own cow and chickens.

My mom and brother/sister-in-law in Virginia try and purchase everything organic and grassfed. My nephew doesn't like to eat meat (he's only two years old), but we think my sister-in-law still being a vegetarian when she was pregnant with him caused him to be like this. She's no longer a vegetarian but he just doesn't like any meat products. Of course, his diet mainly consists of cheese and pancakes so that just how healthy his eating habits are. razz

That's great. biggrin I do the same when I buy. And yeah, honestly, I am not a healthy vegetarian. I have been eating so much junk lately.

I was raised a vegetarian until my parents found out I an anaemic. I also had colic as a baby, and I think because of that I now have a sensitive stomach. It might or might not be IBS. Nevertheless, since going vegan my tummy stopped aching that much and often. I don't enjoy eggs, or any kind of dairy, and the texture of meat is difficult for my tum to digest, so the conversion seemed pretty logical to me. It was difficult at the beginning: my family are large on meats (except my dad, but he doesn't live with us - and he doesn't eat very healthy vegetarian food either) and they thought it was just a phase. Until I started dropping weight and they finally realised I'm serious and bought vegetable. Lots of it, and a fair variety.

The reason for going vegan was not only for health benefits, but also for ethical reasons, and sustainability. What we purchase, we encourage. If you buy meat, you encourage the system of animals being farmed for their meat and slaughtered. The less money the meat industry receives, the fewer animals will be killed for our consumption and pleasure. Some also believe that it lessens bad karma. In Ayurveda, there are less life-force, prana, in meat and animal products - "dead protein," if you might have come across the term.

While it is unethical and just plain rude to rub views in the noses of others, it is still important to keep in mind: What we purchase, we encourage.

Here is the UN discussing veganism as a way to save the world: link.

Aw, so you are just like me. It's both my morals and my stomach that have kept me from meat.

You are right about not rubbing it in other people's faces. Most people were raised up with meat, so it's just the way the live. It can be hard to just give up something you've always known and enjoyed. And I can understand when people say animals eat other animals. It's not even the plain fact of killing an animal for meat that bothers me so much. It's the way we do it. I don't see lions out there with steel factories breeding zebras to die. We do it in mass quantity, and not out of need. That's the thing a lot of people don't get. We don't need to eat animals like some animals do. We have opposable thumbs and know how to grow food. People think vegetarians must be deficient in some way. If you do it right, you can get all the nutrients you need without animal products.

I know this thread was created forever ago but I hope you've kept up the good work! Veganism is the best thing I've ever chosen to do.

I had stuck strong with vegetarianism, but the veganism isn't going so well. Like I mentioned I have found a milk substitute. But I haven't found a good cheese, any fake butter, or good cream cheese. I could live without, but it's hard. I'm really actually appalled at how many animal products are out there. Everything has freaking milk. sweatdrop

I know. It's really sad. It's like this lifetime movie they have right now about these women who were kidnapped and tortured. Yeah, it's a true story. Yeah, it's inspiring because in the end they get away. But I couldn't watch it. And I don't know why as humans we want to watch something that depressing. xD

The world does need to know, and it's good there are people out there dedicated to the cause out there filming the truth. But I can hardly handle watching it. I doubt many people can. That shows even more how wrong it is.
