I brought "sturdy" books for that reason
  but they still did damage
  and I feel guilty
those poor books never hurt anyone!

I was working a bookfair today.

A lot of the books we sold were super cheap but we also brought books at 100 bucks or more.

And the people who came by didn't know how to handle books so they kept opening the covers >180 degrees and I'd hear this CRACK and the leather would be damaged.

I was silently crying all day long.

Nooo, what evil creatures. Don't they know books are to be treated with love and kindness? Not to mention, gentle hands…

People are too used to books that you can just throw around all day. I got a bunch of those too, but you'd think when they saw the leather they'd know better!

i happen to be a used book fanatic.

i will go to the used book store with great big bags full of books to trade in, and they have this 2 for 1 deal where you can get a "new" used book for every two you bring in, so i get those, and then i look around and pick up a bunch more!

so i go home with as many books as i arrived with.

but sometimes i do get a true gem, like a soft leatherbound early edition of Undine by Oliver Goldsmith, or even a first edition of Peter Pan!

i believe i now possess all the Jane Austen that has ever been in print, and prolly all the Virginia Woolf too.

she said: "I can only note that the past is beautiful because one never realises an emotion at the time. It expands later, and thus we don't have complete emotions about the present, only about the past."

now i do not know whom to collect.

cheap used books are my kryptonite, but my space constraints don't let me indulge as much as I used to.

Back in Denver one of the library systems would have a "Whale of a sale" which was an entire stadum building full off books that you could buy for five dollars a bag.

Many bags were filled.

our local library sells used books, and they are cheap, and this year i got some that were NEW!

they were the library imprint, collections from lectures and storytellers that had been sponsored by the library.

so they are good quality, and almost like having a rare book!
