August-Blake climbed out of her VW Van, smiling at the rolling waves on the beaches' shore. She slid her t-shirt over her head, clad in a pair of blue shorts and a white bikini. Usually, her grandparents would have a cow at the thought of her surfing alone- but they were out of town. For an entire week! Her stomach knotted in excitement. A whole week out of the summer with her and nothing but nature. Nobody to tell her what she can and can't do, when she can do things, where she can go, who she can go with. The sixteen-year-old retreated to the back of her van, pulling out her violet surfboard before jogging down onto the sand. She kicked off her flip-flops, pulling her dirty-blonde locks into a ponytail and stretching only briefly. A wide grin stretched her pink lips, snakebites glistening in the sunlight, as she waded out into the water.

Laying on her stomach as she paddled out into the swells, August-Blake thought about school. She was going to be a junior the upcoming year, in a small class of - maybe - two hundred. She thought about her family. Her grandparents, her guardians, and only family, were about to lose their ranch. The only place she had ever called home. She thought about all her friends at the ranch- their border collie, Kiss. Their shepherd, Eskimo. Their cats, Midnight and Lucky. Their fox, Pascal, and their owl, Nutter-Butter. But, mostly, she thought about their gypsies. Sure, there were a few chickens, cows and other miscellaneous animals, but their horses had been the start of it all. Vices Legal, their work horse, and Shadow's Pride, August-Blake's past-time.

Finally, shaking her out of her thoughts, a worthy wave began to swell. Out of practice, having not surfed in months, the blue-eyed girl's hands shook in anticipation. She came up the wave, jumping to her feet, and grinned. It wasn't long before she was moving like a pro in the deep water. The waves continued to get larger, more challenging. It wasn't until one began to curl dangerously that she was afraid. Ducking low, she proceeded into the curl, laughing joyously- that is, until her foot slipped, and she was pulled under. The waves practically tenderized her small figure and board, throwing her around. After a few moments, she surfaced near the shore, coughing and spitting up water. Salt water burned her nose and throat while the sun beat down on her back. August-Blake crawled onto the sand, sitting down and continuing to cough. Note to self: listen to gramma and gramps next time. NEVER surf alone!

Lucas “Luke” Stone at 18 years of age could not swim. For him swimming was an impossible task that he had never been able to master. Really it was irrational, it wasn’t like he had some traumatic event that had happened to him in the water that prevented him from learning how to swim. In fact his parents had forced him to go to swimming lessons when he was a kid. But as soon as he had gotten into the water; he had started to freak out and wave his arms wildly and splash around uselessly in the pool. He had an anxiety attack and was helped out of the pool. Ever since then he had never tried to swim again, he just avoided pools and oceans and any large bodies of water that would require him to swim in. He had spent 18 years of his life happily avoiding swimming. Hardly anybody even knew that he couldn’t swim. It had always been something that he was embarrassed about. Eight freaking teen and he still couldn’t swim.

The very fact that he was 18 and still couldn’t swim standing anxiously near his car at the beach. The beach was his sworn enemy every time somebody had invited him to the beach he had made some excuse not to go, fearing that he would be asked to go for a swim and that would not go well at all. But he would be going off to college in a couple of months and he had decided that it was time for him to grow a pair and learn how to freaking swim. Most eighteen year old college males knew how to swim and it was time he became one of those males. Lucas had worked his a** off in his final year of high school to get good grades and a football scholarship to the school of his dreams. Lucas was smart and in relatively good physical condition. He was prepared to finally get over his irrational fears and spend the summer learning the one thing he had never been able to do. He was going to attack swimming with the fierce and abundant passion that he did everything else with.

He leaned against the hood of his car in his grey t-shirt and black swim trunks as he waited for his friend who had promised to teach him how to swim to show up. Lucas was a tad bit early, because he had wanted to mentally prepare himself before his swim lesson. Adrian his best friend and had been on the swimming team had promised Lucas he would teach him how to swim. Of course Lucas’ best friend was a stellar swimmer who knew about Lucas and his inability to swim and had offered to teach Lucas how to swim years ago. Lucas had just never taken him up on his offer until now. Lucas just wished Adrian would hurry up and get there before he changed his mind and bolted.

He ran a hand through his mass of curly blonde hair and looked around the beach, trying to calm himself down and take in his surroundings. There weren’t many people on the beach, which Lucas was thankful for so nobody could see his disastrous attempt at swimming. From where he was standing Lucas’ bright blue eyes noticed one girl on a brightly colored surfboard. He watched slightly in awe as she expertly swam through the water and then began to surf. Lucas was pretty impressed by the girl and found himself entranced as he watched her surf. Lucas didn’t know much about surfing because land sports were his thing. Yet he could tell the girl was pretty damn good. That was until she suddenly was pulled underneath the water. He blinked in surprise wondering if the girl was okay. As soon as she had vanished she had reappeared on the shore. Lucas could see that she was coughing and immediately ran over to her. He stopped about a foot away from her and looked down at her worriedly. The girl was rather small but up close he saw that she was also quite cute. “Hey are you okay? I don’t know much about swimming but I’m pretty sure you should never surf alone.” Lucas said to girl anxiously. She was coughing and seemed to be fine and maybe he was kind of rambling. That was just because he wasn’t sure what he a random stranger with zero lifeguard knowledge could do for her.

August-Blake pulled her knees to her chest, coughing still. She spat out the remaining salt water from her lungs and stomach, looking up as a blonde boy ran over to her. She put a hand over her mouth, holding up her other hand in a thumbs up. But her coughing continued. "I'm - fine..." She rolled her eyes, looking irritated, but finally stopped coughing after another moment or two. "Gosh, I thought I was gonna hack up a lung," she muttered, standing up and stretching her arms out. She inspected her slender appendages, touching them and finding a few places that would soon bruise. Then she bent over, inspecting her long, milky legs. Once again, aside from a two-inch cut on her right thigh, nothing terribly scary. She stood up, tucking a few strands of hair out of her face, and looked at the boy.

Shamelessly, the blonde reached behind her neck and untied - then retied - the string for her stark white bikini. She stuck out a delicate hand, smiling a broad smile at him. "I'm August-Blake. And, yes, that is my full first name, I do have four names, and, yes again, my parents were hippies." Once he'd shaken her hand, the blonde turned and walked to the edge of the water, chewing on her bottom lip. She lifted her violet surfboard up from the sand, feeling its length and finding nothing worth even worrying about. A soft sigh of relief escaped from her lips, hands reaching up and tearing out the black ponytail band from her dripping hair. With her back still towards the boy, she ran her fingers through her knotted hair, blue-painted fingernails glinting in the sunlight.

She turned back around, surfboard in her hands, and tilted her head, smiling happily at her new friend. She strode over to him, blue eyes wide as saucers and filled with curiosity. "So, why are you down by the beach so early in the morning? Most people come later in the day when the water isn't so frigid." As she spoke, she dropped her board and slid her hands onto the waistband of her shorts. She shimmied out of them, white bikini bottoms matching the top. She wrung the shorts out in her hands, laying them on her right shoulder and picking up her board again.
