Briseatn's House

Briseatn lives alone, with no husband or child. Her house is very simple, an appartment near the library, one among many that houses employees of the Council Hall. Briseatn herself oversees many of the rituals performed in the Outer Circle, and is thus known as a "Ritual Keeper."

Her appartment is on the bottom floor, owing to her difficulties in walking. Also for this reason, she has little furniture and the rooms are mostly empty space except for pillows on which to sit and a small couch, in the main room, and pallets on the floor in the bedrooms.

The house is sparsely decorated, with an amiket resting in a case on one of the few shelves in the home.

Briseatn set the squirming, whining Uluen down in a small basket, lined only with a thin, rough blanket.

"There you go," she murmured, scritching the Uluen behind her ears. "You won't be sent out into that terrible upper world, covered in plague and war... you will have a proper life and grow up into a proper young lady."

Latching onto the words that Briseatn enunciated the most, Morcades lifted her head and repeated them questioningly, "Proper? What is Proper?" The little one squirmed more and wriggled out of her blanket, "Rough, yuck..." Her tounge popped out and her eyes squinted tight. "I don't like...Want soft..." Mordaces got to her feet and wobbled, causing the basket she was in to topple over and become more like a tent over her.

Narrowing her eyes a little in annoyance, Briseatn righted the basket and set Morcades back in it. "Proper is, 'What should be,'. And a young lady should have no qualms about the quality of her blankets. You will get used to it, and it will build character.

"Are you tired? I was under that impression, and it's late. I wouldn't want you to get off schedule. We have many things to do tomorrow morning."

Qualms? Character? What on earth is this old woman babbling on about, Morcades thought to herself. "Tired? Yes...'Morrow..." She snuggled down into her basket and yawned widely. Trying her hardest to make the best of a bad blanket, she forced herself to get some rest.

Briseatn watched the child fall asleep - not so much because she moved something inside of her, this new daughter of hers, but because she was making sure the Uluen wasn't faking it, just to get up and wander around later.

Satisfied, Briseatn tucked the Uluen in slightly (the house could get a little chillier than normal during the night) and hobbled off with her cane, swollen, useless foot carefully lifted.

The next morning, a bowl of very unappetizing (and cold)... oatmeal? was set down before Morcades' basket, along with a small saucer of water. The customary milk for a child had been forgone.

Briseatn herself returned to a small dining area by the tiny kitchen, eating a nicer (though still rather grey) meal of bread and milk.

Still not used to the basket, and having wobbly legs, Morcades managed to flip herself and the basket over again. Crawling around with it on top of her, she bumped into a few things, then finally managed to knock it off. Wandering over to her food she greeted it with a disgusted look. Having a go first with the water, she was turned off at how flavorless it was. Smacking her paw down on the side of the bowl, she sent it flying, sending the water spilling all over the floor, "Yucks!"

Hearing the clatter of the dish, Briseatn left her own meal and hobbled in.

"Just what do you think you're doing?" she huffed, narrowing her eyes. "You're going to have to clean all of that up, you know. Eat what is given to you - you won't get anything else if you behave this way."

"No...no, yuck...yuck..." Morcades shook her head and backed away. She stumbled away from Briseatn in fear, attempting to hide in her toppled basket. "Want good stuff...nto yuck...this yuck...yuck makes sick..."

Briseatn looked down at the girl, eyes cold and hard. "First off, sugars and spices are expensive and rare down here. You must get used to that. Second, you are acting like a spoiled, rotten little child. If you want any freedoms, I suggest you shape up, and soon."

She crouched down, wincing in pain, and grabbed up the upturned bowl. "You will only eat once this is cleaned up. If you do a good job, I may add something nice - but only if you do a good job."

Grumbling about bratty children, Briseatn limped out.

Morcades grumbled and whimpered, not wanting to clean up. After pouting for a while, she decided to clean up anyways. Grabbing a rough, scratchy towel and throwing a tantrum the entire time, Morcades cleaned up the mess she had made of her breakfast. "Clean...done...want better foods now...Now."

Briseatn got up and limped to the door of Mor's room. The floor was passably clean, but not shining perfect. She sighed. She wasn't in the mood to keep forcing the girl today. She'd just clean the floor better later on...

Briseatn reheated some of the porridge and added a few cheap (but sweet and good tasting) chopped herbs to it. She set the bowl down for Morcades.

"There."
