It was early evening, pretty early to be up really but he'd woken feeling refreshed and hadn't seen any point in staying in bed longer. Instead the wherhandler had got his wher, grabbed a mug of klah, and headed out into the 'bowl to see the sun set. It was a pretty good sunset really, plenty of orange and red and with some scattered clouds for variety. At times like this he could almost feel peaceful and at ease and these recent turns he didn't feel that often at all. He sipped at his steaming klah and reached over to give his green bondmate a scratch between the shoulders.
Ficksk twitched her tail, not quite so impressed by the evening as her handler was. They had come here a little while ago from their home - their home by the sea - and she didn't think she liked it much. The air smelled different and moved differently, and there were different whers to get used to, and other threats too. She accepted the scratch with a soft rumble however because her human - sweet dumb human - seemed totally oblivious to the obvious problems they had been thrown into and was still worried by his silly human problems. She hoped one day he might grow a brain but she had known him a long time now and he hadn't yet. That was humans for you.

xxThe auburn haired girl had let her hair down as she sat, admiring the sunset. Her leather boots lay beside her, and her bare feet remained relaxed out in front of her. Hazel green eyes trained on the light of the setting sun. Slowly, she began to contemplate the events of the day. The chores, the constant errands, the need to be somewhere. It was nice to kick off her shoes and just relax, if only for a little while at least. Soon, she'd retire to the candidates girl's bunk, where she'd fall asleep listening to the tired breathing of the other girls. Joy. Kalendol thought to herself with a soft sigh.
xxThen she heard a sound and jumped to her feet, only to spy a wherhandler and his green wher. Blinking her eyes she slipped back into the shadows nervously. She still didn't know all the rules about this place. Was she even allowed to be here at this time of evening? What if he told someone of her presence here this late? Most of the other candidates had undoubtedly returned to their cots, sound asleep. Like I should be. She thought with a small wince as she peered around the corner at the green wher. She's pretty.
xxWhat do I do? Should I approach? I heard wher's are more watchers than anything, oh goodness, what if she attacks me? I won't be able to be a candidate anymore. Oh what do I do? Kalendol had never come across a wher before, were they really as everyone in her small hold had claimed? She didn't know. The whers in her hold had been few, but they'd been meaner than snot, she'd remembered that.
xxTaking a deep breath, she pulled her boots back on and then approached slowly, cautiously, "It's beautiful, huh?" The seventeen turn old smiled sheepishly, her eyes going towards the wher and then back to her handler, with his steaming cup of klah. "I always did like the colors." Thatta girl, get some confidence into you. Else, what weyr would want you? She asked herself and then smiled, her hat placed delicately atop her head as her auburn curls fell down to her waist. She grinned a little, she'd been perfectly content to relax. But, now maybe some company would serve better. If they were good company.

"Hu?" The brown-skinned man turned to regard the unfamiliar girl, blinked, and then looked back up at the sky. "Oh, yea, sure is," he agreed with a nod, turning back to Kalendol and raising his mug at her in a bit of a toast and also an explanation; "Sorry, bit slow until I've had my first mug of an evening. You new around here? I'm Fick and this is Ficksk but I call her Fi because Ficksk is a sodding mouthful."
Ficksk regarded the human child with mild suspicion, which was something of a default state for the green wher. As there was no apparent immediate threat however she didn't feel the need to posture or anything.
Giving his wary wher another scratch Fick considered the young woman before him in more detail. She looked pretty young - he pegged her at about half his own age or maybe a little older than that - practically dressed and looked as though she was used to some level of physical work. Had she been brought in for the upcoming dragon clutch? She'd be the right age for that and he hadn't seen her around the handlers' quarters so she probably wasn't a recruit for one of them.

xxKalendol smiled a little and cocked her head, the seventeen turn old understood a grown up's need for Klah, being the youngest of five men and a daughter. "The name is Kalendol, it's a pleasure." She dipped her head at a slight incline, though after her experiences in the mess hall with Vosrin, she did not hold out her hand again. "She's lovely..." The older teen smiled, cocking her head slightly to look down at the wher. Up close, the wher didn't seem so bad. Though, Kalendol opted not to get any closer to her, or her bondmate.
"I just came in from a smaller, outer hold, they did not have weyrs or very many whers there. We barely ever saw a flit there, to be honest." The young woman chuckled and a softer look settled in her hazel eyes as she cocked her head to the wher, "I've always been curious about them though, they surely are very suspicious creatures, hm?" She rose to her full height, which quite honestly wasn't much, and adjusted her tattered cloak as it lay around her shoulders.

"Kalendol," Fick responded, trying out the unfamiliar name in an attempt to cement it in his mind. He paused then to sip at his klah before adding; "Nice t'meet you too then Kalendol and welcome to the Wherholds. Didn't have weyrs? D'you mean you didn't have much contact with the Weyrs?" He guessed she probably did.
"Not all whers are as wary as her," Fick grinned a little bit at his play on words, "but I love her even if she does jump at her own shadow, don't I sweet?"
Ficksk made a clicking noise and gave her handler's shoulder a nudge with her nose, her eyes starting to fade through to blue as she relaxed.

xxThe seventeen turn old blushed deeply and then nodded her head, "Uhm, yes, we didn't have much contact with the weyrs, so dragons and whers are sort of... beyond me." Kalendol chuckled and looked at the wher in question with a small smile. It was intriguing to see this correspondence between the bond mates. Rather, it put her at ease to see. "I know dragons communicate with thoughts, is the same true for whers too?" She asked Fick with a small, shy smile, though it was more out of respect she remained shy. He was older than she was, which meant he automatically gained her respect. Unless, naturally, he did something that ensured he no longer deserved it.
i'm sorry, my muse is terrible at the moment.

((It's all good!))
Fick nodded understanding. "Yeah, I guess if your Hold is small it wouldn't have guard whers. Weird for me to think about, not having 'em around I mean. I grew up in a mining hold see so there were always whers around me; helpful for moving heavy loads, detecting dangerous gas, and moving around in the dark of course."
Kalendol's question was then mulled along with a sip of klah. "Yes and no," he said eventually. "Whers aren't as verbal as dragons, they can use words but they often don't speak in complete sentences. They use a lot of emotions to communicate and sounds too; whistles, clicks, all sorts. Any given place you're in a lot of the whers will have a similar 'language' of noises because their handlers have trained together often and so they pick up the sounds their tutors use with their whers and then pass it on to their own bondmates. Fi and I stand out a bit from the whers around here for that reason, cause we came in from a hold."
As the human chatter continued Ficksk began to relax a bit more and lay down next to her handler with a big yawn that showed off a maw full of very impressive fangs.

xxKalendol listened and nodded her head, "That makes sense." She chuckled a little and then watched the wher as it yawned, her body mentally cringing at the impressive teeth of the creature. A small smile transformed her features for a moment, and the seventeen turn old looked to the man once more. "I think everyone has a tendency to stand out in their own way. Even if they've lived in a place for a long time." Kalendol chuckled with a shake of her head. People were unique like that.

"Heh," Fick shrugged affably, "true enough." Everyone was unique, just like everyone else! Except most people didn't like to be too unique, to go too much against the grain because if you did that... well it wasn't exactly a way to make friends and allies and so to stay safe. Maybe that was cynical of him though, or maybe just him projecting his own issues on the rest of the world. Still it had kept him safe right and wasn't life better now? He might not like how things had come to be this way, or all the continued violence, but at least he got a bit of respect these days....
Fick blinked and shook his head, his far away look shifting back to a smile as he took another sip of klah. "Leagues away for a minutes there," he explained. "Anyway, what's brought you here Kalendol? The dragon clutch? People are saying it'll be a big one because there aren't a lot of dragons around, something about that makes females lay more eggs apparently? Dunno much about it, that's just what I heard."

xxKalendol grinned and blinked her hazel eyes as she listened to the man's response, she merely grinned broader when it looked like he was in thought. After a moment he'd asked her a reasonable question, and she cocked her head slightly, feeling her long hair move against the fabric of her worn out cloak. "Ah, well, my father originally sent me here to learn from an old friend of his. I'm an apprentice of tannercraft. But when I heard about the clutch, I figured it would be a good chance." She shrugged her shoulders slowly and grinned sheepishly.

"Oh, right," Fick nodded, "well that's a good trade, always work for tanners and leatherworkers around here." This was very true. What was also true, but remained unsaid, was the fact that he wouldn't touch the trade himself with a six foot staff. Oh working with the finished product sounded fine but he knew how the stuff got made and really really wanted nothing to do with that, especially as he was attached to a wher with a very sensitive nose. Ewch.
"Course if you Impress a dragon there won't be a lot of time for it," Fick continued, "riders are rushed off their wings around here defending two territories. Got to admit though they're doing a good job, not heard any complaints from Holds having lost crops or anything. Not for me though, flying around up there and risking getting eaten alive or lost in some airless void to suffocate... Err, not that I'm trying to put you off," the wherhandler grinned apologetically, "just thinking aloud. I like my feet on the ground for the most part, I've glided on Fi before to save our necks and we've been transported between the wherholds by dragons - going between to do it - but I'd not like to do it as a matter of course."

She honestly could say that hearing his point of view did not sway her away from riding. "I'd like to be up in the air, where I can soar among the clouds. Away from the ground." She sighed and shook her head. Kalendol had dreams of course, like anyone else. "I never wanted to become a tanner, my father decided that since none of his sons would turn out to be tanners, he'd teach me instead. It sort of just happened." She laughed and shrugged, but then lifted her foot, pointing at her boots. "I made these, they were too big for me feet. Still are really. But you couldn't tell, right?" She giggled. Kalendol certainly was a weird one.
