Generally when I am discussing my beliefs I say my philosophy or way of life is that of buddhism.
I have found little reason to actually identify myself as a buddhist.
It almost appears illogical for me to label myself as a buddhist.
I am curious as to your opinions.
Do you see benefit in labeling yourself as a buddhist?

So far, whenever people ask me what religion I'm in I would say "Buddhist" and then they would say "cool" or something like that. neutral

The general responce I get is along the same lines, Goh. No one really has problems, or asks me to go into great detail.

As for the actually labeling yourself Buddhist bit, in some ways it's good - saying you are Buddhist means you follow the Dharma as laid out by Buddha Gautama, you believe the philosophy and live it. Not so bad.

The only bad part is really a Zen-end nitpick that edges into my brain whenever I label anything - labeling == attachment's root. You name it, it is, and you believe it should forever be.

I think it's just a matter of whether you think the label of being a Buddhist is important to you. You don't really have to name it anything. Zen does it's best not to... but it's really hard to get around the funny tricks of language. So I say, for the sanity of those that may not understand.... you may wish to name it something.

Sometimes you just have to play that game to keep the peace. sweatdrop

Honestly, labels aren't that important although they do help up to some degree. What's more important is that you practice Buddhism. 3nodding

Ha ... well, while trying to be not attached to the label ... I prefer to say "Dharmaist" instead ... blaugh ( since people do exclaim on how I was praying to statues whenever I said 'Buddhist' in the past ... but saying "Dharmaist" gets them to think and find out what 'Dharma' means, usually ... sweatdrop )

There are no benefits.

The benefits are endless.

It is a release from this cycle of life.

It means unending lifetimes in this wheel of Kalpa.

It is the end to all Suffering.

It is nothing, it is everything.
