Name:
Kylerr

Age: 16

Gender: Male

Sexual Orientation: Homosexual

Craft/Rank: Harper apprentice

History:

Born in Benden Weyr, Kylerr was really raised by three parents instead of the usual two. While his parents were tending to their sundry tasks around the Weyr, they would entrust his care to his father’s father, knowing that the man would be just as good - if not better - than the other caretakers in the creche. After all, that was how Kylerr’s father had been raised, and he’d turned out alright.

Kylerr’s grandfather was a retired harper, and although he was done with his profession, his profession was not done with him. He would lull Kylerr to sleep with his songs as a baby, entertain him with them at play as a toddler, and when he was old enough to stop pretending to play the lyre, his grandfather taught him how to play the real thing. His parents were proud to see Benden Weyr’s harpers accept him into their instruction shortly thereafter, his grandfather even moreso.

His training was so satisfying to him that he never realized the comraderie he missed out on by not being in the creche with the others in his regular classes. They never included him, or talked to him much, but to Kylerr it didn’t matter. He enjoyed fellowship with his fellow apprentice harpers and the opportunity to explore the songs and lose himself in the music. They were people like him, but he was too distracted by the music to notice there were other activities going on, other connections and events and interactions being made in his milieu. This made more sensitive people bitter - he was the teachers’ wher, showing off, too good to stay in the creche with the rest of them. This cut Kylerr to the quick, and it was only then that he finally realized that he was some kind of anomaly. His classmates in the creche were close, weren’t they? They were almost like a family themselves, weren’t they? These issues weighed heavily on his mind and affected his playing and learning. No matter how much his teachers praised him or offer him assistance, he pushed them away. He didn’t need another reason to be spurned. Eventually, they decided to advanced him ahead a class, but then, instead of being ridiculed for being too good for everyone socially, the few lagging behind got jealous over how easy their lessons came to this younger boy.

He couldn’t have been expected to be their peers, as older children, but yet the majority of them did take him under their wing. He was finally acknowledged, respected by his classmates. They appreciated his contributions, and even continued beyond the prescribed end of lessons. His family began seeing a little less of him, but they were pleased to see him adjusting to his role in the weyr so they never said anything to him about it so long as he was safe.

As he entered his teen years, age got the better of his grandfather and he passed, and not long after that, the bloody revolution overthrew the old Traditions and left the harpers in a state of confusion. Kylerr sought solace in the old, familiar, and warm, and in his spare time took his songs to the dark corners, in order to soothe the wounded, both physically and emotionally.

Kylerr knew, saw, heard, believed, that the harpers weren’t the only ones. Everyone seemed unsure of what had just happened and what was to come. What was done was done, however, and there needed to be calm in the cacophony. It only made sense to Kylerr that the keepers of the old traditions be instrumental in forging the new ones, so upon hearing of the new Clutch, he had no choice but to Stand.

Description:

Kylerr is 5’6”, pale, with long straight chestnut hair parted down the middle that frames his face and falls just below his chest. His eyes are a light brown to match, his features soft. His body is slim and lacks definition, but he carries enough meat on him to not look like a skeleton draped in flesh. Some have mistaken him for a girl, but the crackle in his voice betrays him.

Personality:

Kylerr concerns himself primarily with harmony, both with others and within himself, and not to mention quite literally as it pertains to music. This is his problem with the changes being made by the current regime in Benden - they are affecting the rhythmic consistency of the verses and the beautiful songs of his youth, taught him by his grandfather, are being ruined by forcing syllables and platitudes in the place of the elegant, historical, and instructive lyrics. Surely they understand that old songs are still useful, if nothing else, as the point to their rhetorical counterpoint! But no matter how much he loves the old songs, how much he cherishes his grandfather’s memory, he must swallow it for the sake of job and safety, for the sake of greater personal harmony.

He’s not happy with the means of the rebellion, but the ideas seem sound. They seek harmony, worldwide harmony, and Kylerr wants to know if it’s possible. But the riders are upset because they’re under the thumb and the current regime is enjoying being the ones pressing that thumb down on the riders. Tensions are still running high on both sides and Kylerr wants to be a man to bridge the gap - past and present, riders and handlers, weyrs and holds. Even with the atypical colors of dragons - if they exist, they must have their place. Harmony. And he won’t be satisfied until he can sing all of the old songs and the old words somewhere other than his sleeping chamber or dangerous dens of quiet traditionalists.

This obsession with harmony paradoxically comes at the cost of other dissonances. In moments of self-evaluation and personal conflict, it can lead to Kylerr unnecessarily sustaining a suspended chord instead of letting it resolve naturally to its major - in other words, he’ll overanalyze and try to fix everything before either he or the other party is ready.

Kylerr is sociable, but doesn’t go out of his way necessarily to engage others. He’s comfortable performing, but his relationship to his listeners is hardly the same as acquaintance or friendship. He’s spent most of his years laid back, focusing on his philosophies more than their ramifications, but now that the rebellion has happened and changes are occurring, he feels that he is the only one who wants what he wants and therefore the only one that can do it; it is too important to him to either swallow it fully or abandon the weyr. Harmony, equality, and the resulting peace must be reached, however much of it he could accomplish, anyway.

Hey! Kylerr looks like he's going to be great to have around but before I can approve him I need to clarify my understanding of a few things!

History: Could you tell me just a little more about his early childhood? How did he get along with the other children in the Weyr? Most Weyrbrats are raised by the creche, did he have any thoughts on that being brought up by his grandfather?

When you say he was accepted by the master harpers into their instruction do you mean he went to Harper Hall? Benden Wherhold wouldn't usually Search candidates from there but perhaps if one of his parents was a rider they could have fetched him personally for the clutch?

Personality: I'm afraid I don't quite follow this line, could you clarify for me? "But the riders are under the thumb and the current regime is the one pressing the thumb."

Just as a heads up, standing in the middle of the road would not be very safe for him long term at Benden; he would need to at least outwardly express that he believes in the Wherhold cause, and will be expected to work hard to further their goals. Also in general the wherholds have nothing against the old songs, well other than the ones that praise dragons and riders to the moons and back.

Could you tell me a bit more about his tendency to over analyze and how it come about during personal conflicts? An example of how it has manifested in the past would be great. If you could bring this out a bit more it would be a good character flaw, which everyone needs!

It would also be good to know what he's like socially (Introvert or extrovert? Charming or awkward? Dominant or passive?). I'd also like to know the sorts of things he likes to do with his free time, along with some things he dislikes or fears. Being originally from Benden does he look down on the atypical colours as was the norm? Black, Crimson and Silver don't appear anywhere in the old songs so does he think they have a place in the world?

Lastly what is it he really wants; is it peace that he seeks, or fairness, or some kind of more philosophical balance in the universe?

All of the above, and any more detail you can think of to give, will make it easier to match him to a dragon.

Please let me know if you need any more info or anything! Look forward to seeing him in play. =D
