Well honestly most anime cons don't care what you wear!
I've been more inclined to wear 'cosplay' of video game characters rather than anime characters.
I also see loads of other outfits being worn, despite their lack of relevance to "anime".
I've been going to one con in particular for about 5 years and all the people are very welcoming and open to anything!
I've also been to a small scale comic-con and merely wore a lolita outfit and got lots of "Can I take your picture??"s and "Aw you look so cool!" even though I wasn't wearing what everyone else was wearing.
When I started to cosplay back in 2009 the Anime / Cosplay cons that I went to their was mostly Anime & video game characters like from Final Fantasy. At first I felt out of place because I saw mostly anime series characters around me. I do agree that what ever people wore at that time was easily accepted by all which I thought was amazing and comforting. In the last two years the Anime / Cosplay cons have simply turned into cosplay cons with cosplayers from TV shows, Movies, DC & Marvel characters, Disney, video games, and certainly Anime characters. It's such a variety now that I don't know who I'm going to come across next.
smile Their are some cons that focus mainly on Anime and Video Game cosplayers but they are getting harder to find. The cons are a lot more exciting now because of the larger variety of characters that are being cosplayed.
