Name: Dianno
Age: 17
Gender: Male
Rank: Senior Weyrling
Appearance:
Dianno has dark brown skin with cool undertones. His hair is black and his eyes are only brown enough to not be. He's short for his age, only 5'5 at 17 turns and his hopeful that he will grow taller despite the short stature of his parents before him. As of now, his body is compact and fit from his efforts as a weyrling and his dislike of being sedentary.
He's got a healthy respect for personal hygine and keeps himself clean and his clothing in good repair. He's got a fish hook necklace that he wears all the time (because at one point someone told him it looked cool) His hair is styled in a few cornrows on the right side of his head and left to grow long over the rest.
He doesn't care much for fashion or style when it comes to his general attire as long as it is comfortable, easy to work in, and in good condition. He does tend to lean towards warmer colors if a choice must be made, bright oranges when available, or the classic red of Benden dominate his casual wardrobe.
Personality:
Self-reliant, persistant, serious
Guarded, Disresepectful, Selfish
Dianno is determined to live his life as he wants, not as anyone else dictates. The freedom a life as a trader offers is the best way he sees to achieve that. Things like Holds and Weyrs don't agree with him. If he had a say in the matter, he wouldn't even enter them on trader business. All of those walls and confinement make him uncomfortable. Even the forested valleys and rolling hills between Benden and Bitra holds were preferable to the icy stone walls of the weyr.
He has very little respect for authority, with only a few figures in his life having earned it in his opinion. At the top of his list: His caravan master, and to a lesser extent his mother. Anyone else who claims to hold 'rank' over him is met with a snear and a cold shoulder until their respect is earned. Fancy knots don't impress him until you've proven your worth. You can stick it where the sun don't shine for all he cares. You're just wasting your breath on him.
Dianno has will enough to match anyone, but where he won't let anyone tell him what to do, neither will he boss around others. He doesn't care what you do as long as you're not interfering with what he wants to do. He's not a physical fighter but Dianno is free with insults and passive agressive comments. When push comes to shove he'll defend himself with no restraint.
Dianno has strong reservations and mistrust when it comes to others and tends to gather more information about those around him than he gives of himself.
History:
Dianno grew up alongside his mother Tadia. He was born soon after she joined a Trader caravan after failing to Impress at Igen Weyr. He remembers his early turns as being happy, though he doesn't distinctly remember his father. He was just another friend of his mothers. When he was 6 he and his mother stayed at the Tannercraft hall for a couple turns. He didn't understand why or care for it (being only a small child in a suddenly restricted situation). In fact his mother was continuing and finishing her previously abandoned apprenticeship now that she'd had the marks to do so.
His favorite memories though have all come from their second caravan. There, he was initiated into the Traders life, taught to carry his own weight and allowed for the most part to run free and do as he wanted when he wasn't otherwise occupied. His mother is a fairly lenient and passive parent, doing what she could to prepare her son without trying to protect him from outside dangers. He was allowed to make his own decisions, his own mistakes, and to learn from them as he did so.
Dianno stayed with the traders when his mother got hurt. He was almost 13 at the time and one of the older men who Dianno looked up to offered to care for him until they returned for her. It was during this time that Dianno learned of the actual work of a Trader. Up until then he'd only ever paid attention to the parts that affected himself, the camping, the traveling, the occasional hawking of goods at gathers across Pern. His mentor taught him about credit, and the varying value of currency between Hold and Hall and Weyr. He saw first hand the serious negotiations that make up a Trader's livelyhood.
While it didn't strike him as a calling, he found it all very interesting and gave him a sense of being an 'adult'. It was just enough of a taste to make him bitter about his mother's return. Once again, he was a child regulated to the background. His freedom didn't taste as sweet with his restrictions back in place and with the growing tensions between weyr and hold as the threat of Thread remained unfulfilled things his life felt more and more like a cage.
Dianno grew rebellious and angry at everything, lashing out by acting contrary and stubbornly refusing to do anything if he was told to by someone else. He stopped short of actually being removed from the caravan, but he became a problem. His mother's mobility was restricted after her accident and eventually she made the decision that they should leave the caravan and settle in Benden weyr. Her skills in both tannercraft and domestic affairs earned her a position among the lower caverns that suited her well enough for now and Dianno was accepted among the candidates as the frequency of clutches continued to increase.
It was at the very next clutch that Dianno found himself in a position he'd never expected or initially desired; that of a weyrling. Aioth was a steady and aloof little green, having hatched later in the clutch and even having the gall to test Dianno's mettle before finally linking her mind to his. Her hardworking attitude helped him re-direct his energies into productive tasks while both of them still stood up for their respective rights as a rider pair despite the general attitude towards his age and her hide.
Their weyrlinghood went smoother than Dianno could have imagined, aided in large part by Aioth's taking the lead during their lessons. She was an excellent pupil and tended to drag her rider around by the metaphorical ear when he was feeling his most stubborn.
The announcement that the elite of Pern would be gathering in their own home to discuss the fate of the entire planet caught the attention of both rider and dragon and each in their own way put themselves into positions to gather as much gossip as possible. They had their reservations on the matter, the seething undercurrent of dissent was hard to ignore, but as a weyrling green and her rider, they were largely ignored when they quietly questioned the wisdom of Sereth and her rider in ordering this meeting in person.
Not to say that they expected the eventual outcome in any form. The sudden attack during breakfast and subsequent massacre caught both Aioth and Dianno by surprise. Sheer dumb luck and the summons of an older dragon are the only things that saw an injured Dianno flung haphazardly onto Aioth's side as the green grabbed the first coordinates supplied and blinked between with no idea of their real destination. Better the slim chance of survival or the painless quiet of between to this bloody nightmare and agonizing death that was assured were they to remain.
DRAGON
Name: Aioth
Age: 12 -13 months
Colour: Green
Feel of voice: The blast of hot air from a forge, the soft caress of leather on bare skin.
Appearance: Greens: 15' long, ~5' tall at the shoulder. 95% of green dragons from this time measured between 12' and 16' long.
Aioth was a big girl from the get-go. She has exceptionally long, straight wings designed not for speed but for extended periods of flight. She is an excellent glider and more comfortable in the air than out of it.
Judging from her current rate of growth, she's likely to top out at the upper end of the green average. Dianno has no doubts that she'll hit 16' and would not be surprised if she crept even above that.
(Based on the Temple Pit Viper)
Personality:
Patient, Hardworking, Generally Cooperative,
Nosy, High expectations, Explosive when angered, Distant
Aioth's calm for a green, exhibiting less of the flighty aspects greens can be known for. Instead she acts as a support and a driving force. A dragon to come to for guidance or encouragement. Aioth knows when to let the winds blow as they will and when to reign them in. She's always willing to share her opinion if asked or act as mediator. She prefers to see harmony and cooperation among her clutchmates whom she often views as her responsibility. She's not afraid to lay a firm hand down if it's needed, no matter what color your hide.
Aioth has no interest in being a leader herself, but would instead let whoever's in charge call the shots while she makes sure everyone's on task and working together. She takes her duties seriously and expects the same from others. Aioth, when grown, will be happiest when drilling with her wing. The dragon equivalent of 'working up a sweat' leaves her feeling accomplished and satisfied with her day. Especially if there's no drama among her wingmates.
She's a vocal dragon, both mentally and audibly. Thrumms, croons and bugles are common place in Aioth's weyr as the blue gives Hers a running commentary on the goings on in the Weyr. She wouldn't call herself a gossip, though she is, but there's benefit in knowing who's been pegged for a promotion in the Wings (maybe not so much for who's sleeping out in the cold after a failed Flight, but Dianno will be informed of that as well). Aioth on occasion may even speak to another human should she deem it necessary.
Patience has it's limits though. When all other methods have failed, Aioth can snap and turn from helpful breeze to a howling gale. It doesn't matter who's pissed her off. In addition to 'speaking her mind' expect a cuff or smack with her tail at best, or a full on fight if further provoked.
All in all, she's not terrible to spend time with as long as you're not expecting someone to coddle you through your failures. Self-pity and low self-esteem annoy Aioth. If you're in a bad spot you put yourself there and she's not about to be your enabler. She's more than willing to offer her aid so long as in the end, you're the one solving your problem.
