Who: Cesc, Vivi, Alex, and Zul
Where: Vermillion Bakery
Weather: A late summer storm

“Hey. Hey.”

Cesc’s eyes opened. He was lying on the bakery floor. There was the dim light of the storm coming through the windows. It hurt his eyes for a minute to see it.

He saw flip flops.

Azucar’s hand was on the top of his head.

Cesc smiled, squinting, blinking.

Zul had done his work.

He pushed against the ground. His head felt heavy. He felt heavy. And there was gold in his vision, gold on his arms. There was talking. People in the bakery. A man picking up Jamie’s gun in a plastic bag. Jamie hiccupping as Inspector Neele gently led her outside.

He could see the white and red edges of an ambulance.

It was over. It was over.

“You alright?” Azucar crouched down beside him. He was eyeing the Raevan with something akin to wonder on his face. It surprised Cesc to see it. He blinked, then, with a start, sat upright.

“Vivi—“ he gasped. His lungs ached, and his hand flew to his chest.

His… chest…

His hands slid down. What was he wearing? He hadn’t worn this shade of gold since his… since the garden party, since… since…

He had a full chest. A waist. Cesc gasped, his hands flying up, touching his antlers. They had so many twists, spreading from his head – His brain swam in shock.
He propped himself up on one hands.

“Easy there, easy, easy,” said Azucar. “She’s okay. What happened to you? I see you before without wings, and now you’ve got them and some extra length to you, too?” He smiled, comforting. “It’s okay, Cesc. It’s okay. Vivi’s getting looked at right now – had some problem seeing when we got here. How’d you all get knocked out?”

Cesc pulled himself up. Both Raevan and detective rose. He shook his head, putting a hand to his temple. “I think … it was me. I -- did it. I was trying to protect her from Jamie, and then… there was a flash of light and that’s it.” He swallowed. “– Granny? Shepard?”

There were too many emotions. Too much confusion. Relief, elation, exhaustion, worry. Cesc kept one hand at his stomach, trying to ground himself. Stomach.

“We got a call,” said Azucar. He squeezed Cesc’s shoulder. “They’re at the hospital. It’s good your friend got there. Come, Cesc -- she wants to see you.”

Cesc nodded. Bless Zul. Bless him. “I…” He swallowed, a bubbled laugh escaping him. “I kind of want to see me, too.”

First, Zul flew off without warning, leaving her alone in the grocery store and confused, and then as she had been putting the groceries away at home, she received a text. A text! Just a text from Zul, saying he'd explain later, but Cesc was in bad shape at the bakery, and to tell them that 'they're going to be okay.' Alex had never been the type to rage over secrets or vague words, but those words, coupled with Zul's odd behavior, sent her nearly flying off the handle with an anxiety attack.

She ran to the bakery. It was pouring out and the traffic was horrendous (no one knew how to drive in the rain: this was exceptionally true of Gambino residents), and there was no way she was going to waste time if Cesc was in 'bad shape.' What did that mean? Who else was hurt? Fear made her legs move with speed that didn't adhere to the slick sidewalks, adrenaline pumping her heart erratically. Even so, her mind was already turning over what she'd need to do to tend to Cesc when she got to the bakery: what supplies she knew were there, the crystal in her pocket, where she could look him over safely...

...safely...

...in a throng of ambulances and police cars.

Holy. s**t.

Alex let out a strangled sound not unlike a wounded animal, her speed not slowing as she probably should have. Instead, she barreled into and through a throng of looky-loos, pushing people out of the way and vaulting over the yellow-tape barricade. Whatever had happened had been recent, or was still happening, because there were people milling about and barking orders, not manning the populace. She received a few shouts herself and she was pretty sure someone - or a few someones - tried to grab her, but the woman repressed a snarl, holding up her wallet that had her Lab 305 badge in it. "I'm a doctor for the Raevan -- for the guy in there that none of you will know what to do with so let me through or God help me--!"

She didn't know if her threats worked or if she was just that slippery to hold onto when soaking wet. Alex zipped through the line of cars, shoving her wallet back in her back pocket, rounding towards the ambulances. She hesitated only a moment before she decided to check them - just in case! - approaching one that she could see with an official tending someone within. Peeking around the open door, she started, "I'm looking for -- " and her eyes widened, her body rigid in the cold drench of fear for a moment. "--Vivi?"

She had awoken on the cold ground with a starburst of light still blinding her eyes. She grasped on the ground for Cesc, desperate for Cesc, but there were already others there. She recognized Neele's voice, Azucar's, even horrible, horrible Jamie's as she was lead away -- but no matter how hard she'd tried to strain her ears, she could not hear the voice she wanted.

They'd taken her, weeping, outside. Looked at her eyes, told her things. As minutes passed, her vision slowly returned. There was the edges of the paramedics, the ambulance, the outside of the bakery -- her bakery. She'd wept, asked them questions to which they'd given only vague, soothing answers. Everyone, it seemed, was 'with' someone. She wanted Shepard. She wanted Shepard badly. And she needed to know if Cesc was well, if her sweet Raevan's head was still bloodied, if he was alive and himself...

She heard a noise, a sudden and familiar voice through it all. Blinking rapidly, she caught sight of Alex coming through the rain like a godsend. The Frenchwoman let out a strangled cry and leapt forward, before even the paramedic could stop her, and flung her arms around Alex's shoulders.

"Oh! Alex, Alex!" Vivi wept, burying her head in the crook of the Italian woman's neck.

She said nothing else, hiccuping.

A figure darkened the bakery doorway as she did so, balanced on Azucar's side. Cesc watched, his eyes wide, and for a moment could do nothing but stare.
PostPosted: Sun Aug 31, 2014 10:12 pm

Her green eyes were large upon Vivi's beautiful, upset face, and within seconds, she suddenly at the woman bowling her backwards. Alex quickly balanced both of them and wrapped her arms tight around her, heart beating hard in her throat as she tried to gently stroke the woman's dark hair and support her. Be there until -- until what? Until --

s**t. Where was Shepard?

"Hey, I got you, dolcezza, it's okay." They're going to be okay. Damnit, Zul, what the hell did that mean? "Are you hurt? Is Cesc -- ?" Her voice was lost for a moment as her throat tightened with the remainder of fear in her. "Zul texted me, I came as fast as I could." She pressed her face against the dark locks, troubled, trying not to let the welling panic take over. What the hell was going on? Why was Vivi in an ambulance? What had happened to Cesc?

The Italian glanced to the bakery as though it would answer everything. There, silhouetted in the door... that might be the answer. Alex squinted, but no, that was Cesc's colors, and he looked...

"...Vi," she murmured into Vivi's hair, lifting her head and looking more pointedly towards the bakery.

Vivi only tightened her embrace around Alex as the other woman tried to soothe her worries. Alex, bless her, her presence was needed more than even her words. To see her, to touch her, someone unconnected with the whole horrible affair, someone loved... it was grounding. It breathed comfort in her.

Vivi looked up as she heard her name spoken again, and she turned her gaze toward the bakery door.

For a moment, her mind only registered Azucar. He leaned against the doorway, half-smiling, beside a stranger.

A pink-winged, golden-suited man.

All breath left Vivi. She gripped Alex's arm, her mouth open.

"Cesc," she managed. "Cesc?"

The Sigel came forward with a quick flap of his wings. He smiled, the curve of his mouth full of relief. He was beautiful, his shoulders strong and broad, his jaw defined. His eyes were bright and his antlers -- his antlers -- split like branches! He was whole, he was more than whole. There was no blood on him, no desperation, no harm, no wound. His face was clear and earnest and handsome.

Vivi took a step toward him. His arms, larger now, pulled both Alex and Vivi into an embrace.
PostPosted: Sun Aug 31, 2014 10:43 pm

It was a good thing Vivi was clinging to her, because she was certain that as the Sigel approached them, she was going to float away from sheer relief.

Alex gawked. She didn't stare, she didn't oogle, she all out gawked. The woman knew well what the other was made of - really, she knew what all the Raevans were made of. But this...this vision of a dawn-clad stag was so powerful, so elegant and perfect that she found her fear and anxiety overwhelmed by her sense of awe. He was serenity. He was calm, he was mastery of the morning, and most importantly, he was whole. Cesc's mere presence was an overwhelming sense of beauty, and though she could manage no words, Vivi did, and just as she had suddenly found the Frenchwoman in her arms earlier, she then found herself in the stag's embrace.

She blinked wide-eyed into his chest, rigid, before melting against him, one arm looped around Cesc's back and the other around Vivi's, holding onto both of them as though the moment would pass and reality would take them away. The whipping colors of the ambulance and police cars were entirely lost on her, fingers digging into the back of his jacket. For one moment, she was able to rest her head against the taller Raevan's shoulder and take comfort. She felt peace, despite what had brought her there. The very thought of it stirred her from her place, made her brows furrow. She'd come there on fear -- she had to make sure he was actually okay and not quietly hiding something. That happened too much in her experience to let appearances pass easily.

"Are you okay?" she asked him, her voice slightly thick with the relief that still made her feel like she might become a piece of the light that surrounded Cesc. "Zul -- texted me, he said you were hurt, but you look -- Cesc, you're beautiful!" Alex drew in a slightly shaking breath, tears coming unbidden to her eyes. She had no idea what had happened, probably never would, but Vivi was okay and Cesc was whole. Something big happened. She didn't have to know what to know Cesc had overcome some trauma, some hardship. That was the right of passage. And now, he was...he was a Sigel. Alex was as proud as though he were her own, smiling despite her teary gaze up at the stag.

"He um -- he said 'they're okay,' too, I hope you know what that means, I -- jeez!" She embraced them both tightly again. "You guys scared the bejeezus out of me!"

Cesc pulled back as Alex spoke, and a look of relief melted some of the tension from his features. His shoulders relaxed under the fabric of his golden coat, and his larger hands lifted to rub the wrinkle between his brows. He let out a breath and reached out to Alex, one hand on her shoulder. "I am well, I am fine -- They are? Shepard and Granny are alright?"

Vivi's grip on Alex's arm tightened momentarily. She was unable to look away from Cesc, still amazed, still overwhelmed. Her other hand was on her chest, as though trying to keep her heart in its place -- whether to keep it from soaring away or crashing down, she did not know.

"Oh... oh, I am so relieved. So relieved." She turned to Alex, her eyes wet. "A crazy woman, a crazy, crazy, crazy b***h!" A true fury laced the curse that suddenly exploded from her. Her cheeks reddened with anger. "She did not succeed." Vivi's legs began to shake, her jaw tight. "She did not manage to --"

"It's okay," Cesc interrupted. He smiled, gentle, at Alex. "We're all okay. Thanks to Zul."

Vivi laughed, a trembling sound."I think you may be better than okay, my love, my Sigel! Look at you! Heavens above, mon dieu, it is too much. It is far too much for me..."
PostPosted: Thu Sep 04, 2014 10:16 am

Cold realization splashed over her at Cesc's words, making her blood feel icy beneath her soaked skin. They. She should have guessed! Shepard and Granny. Alex did well to repress the sudden spike of fear that seized her, nodding in a bewildered manner. "I -- I assume that's who 'they' are, so yes. He wouldn't have told me to pass it along if there was a problem." She gently touched the hand on her shoulder with her free one, offering him what she hoped was a reassuring smile, one that faltered around the edges at Vivi's venom.

Carefully drawing Vivi close again, trying to be a support for the Frenchwoman, she wasn't about to interrupt or otherwise ask her to calm down. If she had been riled to this amount, the police, the ambulance...something enormous had happened and she still felt in the dark. The most she could do was be a rock in case all those involved needed to fall apart. Cesc had clearly and beautifully triumphed, but it didn't put her mind anymore at ease. It wasn't about her, though.

Another faint smile was offered. "You could both go see them at the hospital, if you want - you should probably go in for a check up yourselves. I'll clean up anything that needs cleaning, if it's okay. I mean. If your friend will let you go." Her green eyes flickered to the man that had been with Cesc before, returning to her two friends. "Leave the menial stuff to me."

Vivi had not stopped trembling since she exploded, her rage still filtering out of her in measures. She rested against Alex, drawing her support from the woman. It was a godsend to have the Italian there, Vivi thought. Stable, warm, capable, a symbol of normalcy and better times... she was like an anchor to reality, a doorway out of the strange and terrible present.

Cesc nodded. "I will go, yes. If --"

He turned, and Azucar was there as if summoned. He had begun ambling from the doorway when Alex mentioned him, and then he was beside them, beneath an umbrella propped casually on his shoulder. He stood just outside the ambulance's shelter, hands in his pockets, waiting for his turn to speak.

"Ah, yes. Well, I do need your statement, Cesc... but I can let you go to the hospital first." He smiled faintly at Alex and nodded, his eyes yellow against the grey backdrop of the day. "And I need to question this crazy lady here that fought her way into my crime scene, also."

"Azucar --" Cesc began to explain, but the note of mischief in the detective's smile halted him.

"I know none of you are going to run," said Azucar. "Go ahead to the hospital." He paused, still looking at Alex. It was, he thought, a fair chance to learn about whatever Cesc was, and the woman had flashed some manner of badge... "... but I wasn't joking about having questions for the lady."

* * * * *

Cesc went through the hospital doors and down the corridor, still getting used to the speed of his new wings. Behind him, he could hear the wet pitter-patter of Vivi's step trying to keep up with him. They both looked, left and right, left and right, waiting for a familiar face or name to lead them.
PostPosted: Tue Sep 09, 2014 12:49 pm

Azucar? Alex cast Cesc an amused smile, disentangling herself slowly from Vivi. "It's okay sunshine, I've been called worse." She chuckled, pressing a reassuring kiss to the French woman's brow and then standing on tiptoe to do the same for Cesc's cheek. "Go, put your minds at ease, okay? I'll text Zul to let him know you'll be there soon. They're probably on the third floor -- been there enough to kinda know how it works."

A rueful smile tugged at her lips, finally releasing them both from her hold. She felt like she was letting go of her own solid ground, of her life raft, but she had to. Sighing deeply, she turned her green eyes onto the officer's yellows, tucking some wet hair behind her ear. "I don't know anything that's happened here, but...I suspect that's not the nature of your questions?" Alex crossed her arms, weight on one side of her hip, giving the man her attention and a small side of sass. "Anything to help those who helped my friends."

What a day...

* * * * *

Like his woman, Zul had been to the hospital enough to know not only the layout, but approximately how long it would take for them to arrive so that he could stay in the room as long as possible before going to wait for them in the hallway. He'd received a lot of questions and damning glances with the two that had been attacked, but that, too, he was familiar with. He knew what he looked like and the circumstances were certainly not in his favor to those who didn't know any better, but it was just another day at the hospital.

Shaking it off, Zul excused himself from Shepard and Granny, floating out into the hallway and checking his phone to see if anyone else had sent a message. Tucking it back in his belt, he glanced down one side of the hallway, the soft sound of feet moving quickly tugging his attention down the opposite side. He was certain there was someone that belonged to those feet, but his vision was filled instead with the dawn and time seemed to halt for a moment.

The demon's patience and concern melted clean off his face in favor of shock and awe, lips slightly parted with the latter. His posture subconsciously straightened when he saw the Sigel approaching him, even if he hadn't been seen yet, eyes wide. Rhedefre. He was whole, he wasn't bleeding, nothing was missing -- in fact, he'd grown --

It was like Zul's mind just screeched to a halt. Surely, only a handful of seconds could have passed between when he saw Cesc and when the stag reached him, but the heart's joy had a way of manipulating one's sense of time. The demon's relief was enough to make him feel a little weak, but the overwhelming sense of pride that took its place literally stole his breath. It was vindication to see the stag now, not even a hint of the broken Frei in his place, alive, well, successful...handsome in a classic way that Zul appreciated. Even in the throes of chaos, the dawn stag brought with him light and authority, a command of the situation. He felt as though if he stared too long, the light might burn him. It was a feeling strangely reminiscent of the Muse.

He wanted to say something, he wanted to fly at Cesc and wrap his arms around him in excitement and joy, to ask him about everything -- there were so many things Zul wanted, but he knew this wasn't the time. He blinked, and the strange light of seeing his grown friend dimmed enough that he saw Vivi in the Sigel's wake, bringing reality back down on his head, hard. They were here to see their two injured family members, not to indulge in his excitement and awe and wonder and questions.

It took a few heartbeats, but the demon managed to straighten again, words a little quiet and bewildered as he tried to keep his emotions to himself. "Rhedefre...Vivi. This room." He extended an arm to indicate more clearly, floating to the side and using his hand to push open the heavy door.

Azucar extended his umbrella to Alex as Vivi and Cesc hurried away, offering her some shelter regardless of her soaked-through appearance. He smiled a gentle, easy smile and lifted an arm to usher her into the bakery proper.

"Step into my office," he said. "I'm fairly certain I can offer you a hot cup of tea."

* * * * *

Vivi was flying. She drove like traffic laws existed just to delay her, cursed like she'd forgotten the rest of any language, and parked like she was stabbing her car into a space. Cesc took the whole ride with both his hands grasping the seatbelt, reminding her gently over and over that their own admittance to the hospital wouldn't allow them to see Granny or Shep any sooner.

They went in. They dashed through doors and Vivi barely stopped to ask Information any details. Third floor, third floor, that was all she knew and all she needed.

She saw Zul first. Whether he was occupied with Cesc's sigelhood, she could not in that moment find it within herself to care. She dashed to him like he was dry land in an ocean, and her hands went to his forearm in a tight grip. It was the first moment she stopped running. She had to know.

"You!" She gasped. "You -- did you help? Did you help? Tell me! Will they be well? I must know first. I must know. Will they be well?"

She waited only long enough to hear his response, her breath bated, her dark hair wild around her. She was scarcely less of a demon in the flashing of her eyes and the red of her lips and the untamed ferocity of her emotions around her. And then she kissed him full on the lips, a tempest of movement, and was gone again. She went into the room he'd opened and shut the door behind her.

Cesc was more patient. He paused, and let Vivi be herself, and lingered by his friend.

"I'll let her have a moment," he said by way of explanation, smiling mildly at Zul. "I sort of need one, myself."

He threaded an arm around Zul's shoulder and pulled him close, embracing the demon for a long moment. Then the stag pulled back and looked down at himself. He hardly knew what to say.

"There wasn't a moment before to thank you," he started. His eyes were bright. "I cannot say how much..." Cesc shook his head. "Thank you for always being there for me. For us. What -- what happened when I left?"

And then the dark-haired Frenchwoman was upon him, all wild and untamed energy. Zul could practically feel her emotions brimming over his skin, licking up his body like flame. Still dazed, tasting her ferocity on his tongue like candy, the demon nodded singularly before adding his voice to his answer, "Yes -- and yes. They just need rest." He was certain he would have said more, but her lips were on his, imparting her need to know, him drinking in the taste of rain and bitterness, and then Vivi was gone. Zul stared after her, wordless. What the hell had happened?

Cesc's soft voice tugged at him like a much needed breeze in an acrid wasteland, and Zul found himself being pulled towards the stag. His arms twined around the new Sigel's body, embracing him rather tightly, lips and nose at ease against the yellow shoulder of Cesc's jacket. The gesture was grounding, pulling the demon's scattered thoughts back into his head, and by the time the dawn stag let him go, he felt more himself, albeit overwhelmed with all he did not know.

Zul subtly shook his tri-horned head, expression between bewildered and amused. "I need no thanks, my friend. You are family. I would move mountains and drain the ocean for you and yours." The demon took Cesc's hand, looking at the new Sigel's growth in a more mindful manner than his slack-jawed awe previously, answering the question with gentleness. "I tended to Shepard first, called the police while pushing the poison from his veins - and did the same for the Lady. I brought her downstairs and had them both seated with wet wash cloths until the paramedics arrived." He glanced to Cesc's face. "I would not let them speak. I know not what happened, and I will not ask unless you need ears to vent upon." He had kept enough to himself in his life to understand it didn't always help to relive a personal hell. Even so, he wanted to encourage Cesc to be more open than he.

Offering a smile that warmed with pride, he let go of Cesc's hand and instead took the stag's face between his hands, blue eyes settled affectionately upon honeyed golds. "You overcame such tribulation, and I cannot convey any understanding to the trial you surmounted. But my friend - dear Rhedefre, I am so, so proud of you." Zul leaned in and gently kissed the stag's brow, finding he had to lift his chin a bit to do so, now that he was about the same height. "You kept your family safe, this much I know." His gaze softened, thumbs brushing gently over Cesc's cheeks before he let him go. "Thank goodness you are whole. I was not sure I'd have been civil to whomever caused you pain if we met again in the condition I found you."

Cesc breathed out a laugh as Zul finished speaking -- not a mirthful sound, but rather one of deep and quiet relief. His friend's touch, the kiss, was so calming, so impossible when he thought of the events just hours ago. He kept one hand on Zul's arm, and even as the demon let him go, Cesc kept the contact.

"Zul..." was all Rhedefre could breathe at the end of it, but the sound was more than his friend's name. His eyes were wet with relief and gratitude, and his fingers tightened on the demon's shoulder. He blinked, once, twice, and his eyes were dry but still red.

Pushed the poison from his veins.

"I don't..." Cesc began quietly. "I don't know if you ever met Jamie, our --" His teeth bit down on the word his lips were forming, 'friend'. His mind had not fully caught up to his current reality. "The girl we knew from the circus." He took in a breath. He wanted to share. Zul told him he'd pushed poison out of Shepard's veins and it made Cesc's limbs shake with relief. He needed, he wanted to do the same. "But she killed someone. She killed two people in some crazy, misplaced rage. And she wanted ... us, too."

Cesc shook his head. He put one hand to his temple. "I wanted... I wanted revenge for -- when I saw Shepard -- when she shot me like that. But I didn't. I didn't take it." His voice was pinched, dazed. "I just... made sure she didn't hurt Vivi. And you -- you, my friend -- you made sure the police were there fast enough to take her away."

The demon retained his silence as the stag spoke of what had happened in a succinct, footnotes version. He could feel his brow crease in response to the turbulent words, a flicker of something dark and roiling in his eyes like a storm before it passed back into sky blue. Zul's lips set tight, bloodless, unblinking gaze sternly upon Cesc, though it was not the emotion he wished to project. He'd just never been good at swallowing back the rage of destruction -- usually, he could take it out on the source of his ire. It was strange, having it settle in his chest with no where to go.

"Perhaps in passing, I don't recall," he murmured earnestly, though his voice was as pinched as his eyebrows. "My friend, all I did was place a call. I could not usher them any faster, and had I known what had transpired, I would have certainly tried." He paused, a small bit of that darkness trickling through his smokey voice. "I've have killed the b***h. Messy. Might have frightened you and Vi off, but..." Melisande's fearful eyes flashed in his mind. Would that vision ever cease to haunt him? "...I'm glad you handled it. I'm glad it was you, and that you did it the way truest to yourself."

Zul exhaled softly and slowly through his nose, his anger still lingering in the corners of his eyes. He lifted his hand again, ghosting his fingers over where he'd seen Cesc's eyes leaking molten gold not that long ago, up to the horn that had been missing, shattered...by a bullet.

Jamie. He'd keep that name tucked in his mind, in case he ever had the displeasure of meeting her. Or perhaps it would be more accurate to say, if she ever had the displeasure of meeting him.

"Because of you, because of your quick thinking and grace, your love and strength -- you saved your family. You will take this boon and this credit and you will live with it, because you deserve it. Your growth is a testament to your ordeal. You overcame. And you won." Not only did he win, but he won in a manner more civil, more...virtuous than Zul ever could have. To say he was proud of the stag was such an overwhelming understatement. "You were exactly where you were needed, thank goodness."
