COLLEGE QUESTION TIME

Okay, so I am taking nineteen hours. These are my classes. I'm kind of nervous, because I am a freshman. Is this too much?

GEOL 105 - 3 Hours - Basically memorization and note-taking.
SPAN 102 - 3 Hours - I know everything already. I just need to brush up.
SPAN 112 - 1 Hour - Not extra work, just an extra class. This class is not mandatory; the entire grade is homework that is done online, which is already assigned for Spanish 102. I might as well be getting a credit hour for it.
FREN 322 - 3 Hours - French and Francophone Culture.
Introduction to popular culture in the French and Francophone communities including cultural and social aspects of everyday life and their reflection in the media.
FREN 301 - 3 Hours - Cajun French. This is only offered in the fall, so I need to take it now.
ENGL 115 - 3 Hours - Honors English. Lots of essays, which I'm good at writing.
HONR 110 - 1 Hour - I've heard that this class is fun.
UNIV 100 - 2 Hours - A "basket-weaving" class that is required for all freshman.

---

Also, I would like to triple major, if possible. What I'd like to know is this: is it possible? I at least plan to double major in French and Spanish. I'd like to add German to the mix as well.

---

Are my expectations a little too high?

That is a lot for a freshman.
In my opinion anyways.
It'll be really stressful, even if you know some of the classes material already.
Proceed with caution please..

You are probably going to get all those confused with each other. Especially french and spanish; two Latin based languages that often causes people to become confused by. Plus remember, you will have papers and lot's of essays overlapping each other and will probably not have a lot of time to dedicate to outside fun. Balance is key. You may want to balance your timetable out a bit so your not so overstressed.

I really enjoy languages, though. Those are my "activities," if you will. I'd rather learn a language than do anything else. For me, it's like playing a sport. I often times confuse rules of sports, though. To me, they are all very similar. But in my five years of language-learning, I've never confused my languages. I had a good grasp of French before I got started with Spanish, so that's probably why. And now that I have a good grasp in Spanish, I think it's time for me to add German. I did Italian for a semester, but Italian is not offered at my current college, so I can't "officially" pursue it further.

Now, I wouldn't try to start two languages from scratch. That's a good way to get them confused.

Hi Chromo,

I've gone through college already and yes you are taking on too many classes at once. I made that mistake in one of my semesters and ended up failing half of the classes because I couldn't keep up. That cost me some money to retake those classes. Also I agree with Luck, trying to learn many different languages at the same time can be very hard. I would take them one at a time if possible. If you want a challenge on learning a language try learning Klingon from Star Trek. I have a Klingon to English dictionary and it's quite a challenge.

As for your major, some people will finish a Liberal Arts degree and then go on to finish another degree using the first one as a stepping stone. As for a major I think that you can only do one at a time. That could depend on the school. I suggest asking a counselor at your school for help on that question. As for myself I have an Associates Degree in Science. My major was Electronics and my minor was Robotics. When I was in college I could have one major and add on as many minors as I wanted. Basically I added classes to my course load to create a minor.

Wow, I didn't know that they had "basket-weaving" in college. When I went I had to pick 2 Physical Ed classes because I was under 21. I picked Bowling and Indoor Volleyball. Good luck with your classes.

The average of credit hours per semester is 16,
Which is also often times the "limit" if you will.
People do not recommend you go over 16 credit hours.
My first semester in college I took 12, which is considered part time.
I'm currently taking a 19 credit hour load and even though it's "culinary arts" and not what you're doing it's still a lot.
I took a 18 credit hour of science, math and more science about a year ago and it was a lot to handle.
It's not impossible to handle but knowing that you already have some anxiety things going on it may be better to see if you can drop some of those classes and wait on taking so many.
I realize that may cost you some money but it'll cost you more money if you end up drop-failing out of some of those.

I forgot to mention that I'm pretty much fluent in French. I tested as high as I could, so I'm "learning" things I've known how to do for a few years. I read French novels and I've translated one of my fanfictions into French.

As for Spanish, I've had a few years, and I'm only taking the class I'm in for review. I'm bored, but I answer pretty much every question correctly, before he has even taught the lesson.

We're allowed to have double majors, but I really find myself wanting to triple major. I'm thinking it'll just be a double major and a minor, though.

Thank you for your input! I appreciate the help. C:

I'm considering dropping Cajun French. I don't know if I will, but I'll consider it. I'm not hard-headed - I'm not going to force myself to do something that may not be feasible.

You are right about the anxiety. And the less anxiety I have in my life, the better! Thank you for your input. I didn't take the anxiety into consideration!

In my attempt to get credit for French 202, I was moved up to French 322. Yayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy. Actually, I'm excited. This class is pretty much all speaking and reading, and there are only two other students. I'm still the best at French. C:

|| Oh my...
That is very stressful, your schedule. But, it seems like you can handle it for a short amount of time. Before you know it. BOOOM. Everything can or will get out of order. I think you should just wait until 2nd year, to get settled down, or used to what you're going into.

My sister, is starting, will a full packed schedule, kind of like yours, and she is already struggling. So.. Think about it! I really think you should. It'll probably help if you take more of the ones that you aren't quite familiar with yet, and take it small with the easy one you already have, or got mostly covered. ||
