 Calanthe had been growing at a steady and somewhat alarming rate ever since she'd hatched from the seed pod Miela had brought home from Fae Clearing. She'd had a voracious appetite from day 1, and Miela had had to rig a little "backpack" type setup so Calanthe couldn't run amok in her fields. Once she'd done a little growing up, Miela had been able to teach her which plants ought to be left in the field, and which were weeds, and she became a boon to Miela's work, eating all the weeds in sight while leaving the good plants. Miela was looking forward to her harvest this fall!
Lately, though...Calanthe had been even more hungry than usual. It worried Miela a little bit. It seemed like all the little bug-Pae wanted to do was eat, and occasionally cry. And when she cried, she was inconsolable. Nothing Miela did helped. She wanted to take her to a healer, or someone, to see if anything could be done, or if this was normal at her age, or anything, but as she was one of very few of her kind (that anyone knew of), there wasn't much Miela could do. It broke her heart, seeing her little Calanthe like this, and she worried day and night over her.

 Calanthe had been miserable lately. She was so tired all the time, and all she wanted to do was sleep, but her body constantly urged her to eat. Eat and eat and eat. She'd eat until she was full, and then only a few hours later it would be like she hadn't eaten in days. The worst part was that she didn't understand why any of this was happening to her. She just wanted to go out in the field with Mother and play with the bees and help Mother by eating the bad plants. But lately she'd been so hungry she'd started to sneak the good plants too. She felt so guilty about it that she didn't even want to go. She was crying a lot too, but she didn't really know why that was, either, other than that she felt so out of control of herself. She just wanted to sleep forever.
One day, when she was feeling particularly miserable and had elected to stay home while Mother worked in the field, she was so tired that she crawled up onto the shelf where Mother kept the pieces of the seed pod she'd come from. She wanted to crawl back into that seed pod and sleep forever. And she curled up on that shelf and went to sleep.
As she slept, some changes began to take place. Calanthe began to spin a cocoon of sorts, closing herself up in it and attaching it firmly to the ceiling and the shelf. She was safe here, cozy and warm in her chrysalis. She could be at peace here, and sleep until she wasn't tired or hungry anymore. A small smile broke onto her face, invisible to the outside world.
