 The sun beat down on the icy colored dragoness. It was getting on in the day, almost afternoon, and the heat just kept on rising.
Damn heat...it already feels like I could melt. Bet Pop's just loving this...
Alina swept her eyes over her surroundings, finding a tree that appeared to be casting a plentiful amount of shade. Not wanting to stay out in the sun too much longer, she got comfortable underneath the tree's many branches. She swore the temperature dropped 20 degrees between the sun and the shade. Pale as she was, Alina tended to burn rather easily in the noonday light.
And sunburns were not cool. They were rather warm, and kept her warmer than she liked to be. And then there was the scale shed. The best cure for the itch that came with shedding was her sharp claws. She was not looking forward to another sunburn, so the shade would be her friend today. Curling up into a comfortable ball, Alina formed her mouth into a an "O" shape and blew out. Intense cold crystallized the humidity in the air into several snowflakes. She smiled, "Now that's more like it..."

 Verdis Bina was walking with her nose in a book when she felt a blast of cold air. It was welcome, in this warmth, and she followed it without taking her eyes off the book.
It wasn't until she hit shade that she looked up and saw a glittering dragon in front of her. "Oh, hello!" said Verdis brightly. She watched some snowflakes dance around in the breeze. "Did you make those?"

Alina startled at the white mare's appearance, but quickly checked herself. It wouldn't do to have someone think she was afraid. She eyed the female warily before remembering some manners.
"I did. They don't last long in this heat though." The snowflakes floated to the ground and melted so Alina blew more into existence. "Good book?'

Verdis chuckled greedily. "Oh, yes, a wonderful book! It's- ah..." Verdis stopped herself going on a spiel about her book, as she'd almost never come back from it, and noticed the pale pony's suffering posture.
"Is it too hot for you here?" she asked. "Are you waiting here for someone?" Verdis winked and then her face lengthened in shock. "Am I interrupting a tryst? Oh how wrong of me!"

Alina wasn't sure whether to be horrified or to laugh. She settled for some nervous laughter, "Oh no. I'm not waiting on anyone. And I most certainly not having a tryst."
Alina stretched her tail out. Having it curled around her wasn't helping hre beat the heat like she had hoped it would. "It's a bit warm for me at the moment, yes. But sitting here in the shade, while hot, means that I don't burn my hide. That sucked the last time."

I didn't know dragons could get sunburn," said Verdis Bina. "But then, I don't know any who look like you." She put her book away and brought out a thin piece of stone, some kind of shale.
"I have a portal here," she said. "Would you like to come somewhere cooler with me?" She looked awkward for a moment to invite a stranger out with her.
"My boyfriend goes around other places using portals, well he calls them windows. I make things appear but he does things," she said excitedly. "Usually, what he does is fun or funny. I never did that before, I just read about it."

Alina's voice was filled with relief, "That wouldn't be too much trouble would it? I'd love to be somewhere cooler right now. I'm afraid that I don't have anything on me to trade for your service though..." She smiled, starting to relax a bit more around Verdis. "But it would be an adventure to talk about."

Verdis Bina shook her head so her hair swam in the air. "Don't worry about trade- I'll get another one from my boyfriend." She set the stone down and looked at it thoughtfully. "Somewhere cooler... Oh! What about the kingdom of snow? I have been there before, not for very long. It's actually not usually really cold or covered in snow, but it's always snowing. This time of year is this really great festival, I'm told, where ponies carve things into ice, like statues, decorations, even whole buildings! Oh, I've sold myself, I want to go!"

Alina couldn't help but smile as Verdis talked. "That sounds like a wonderful place to go. Snow would be such a welcome sight."
The pale dragoness stretched her body back out to a standing position and blew her forelock out of her eyes. "I don't think I've ever traveled this way before..."

"It's perfectly safe," said Verdis Bina. "I think it is, at least." She pulled her leg back and then stomped on the shard, cracking it. Out of the shard rose a shimmering, billowing cloud.
"The Kingdom of Snow," said Verdis Bina. The cloud rose and spread further and then solidified into a broad pane of many-layered and textured stone.
"Now we just step through," she said brightly. She glanced up at the now-standing Alina. "If you change your mind and don't want to come, that's fine. But I hope I see you there."
She stepped through the stone like she was stepping into a deep pool which swallowed her up and then returned to a still, calm surface.
