Mintaka's refuge shouldn't have bothered her so much. It was just a creaky old estate, sprawling over maybe a dozen acres -- well-loved by its new owner, far removed from the dangers of Destiny City proper. It was nothing like a worn old bench under a streetlamp in North End Park, that she'd once thought of as a kind of second home. And Labyrinthite, she reminded herself, was not here. No one was coming for her here: to talk or otherwise.

(The bench had ended in splinters, she remembered. Eventually it had been removed; now there was just a slab of concrete under a streetlamp, with holes where the bench had once been bolted down. She didn't go there often.

There was no reason to.)

Laney'd tried to tell herself many times that Mintaka wouldn't end as she had. That, somehow, she'd never find a shadowed face (or faces, plural; or no faces, just monsters and teeth) darkening her doorstep one day. That her desire for peace and cooperation and neutrality would be met with better honor than Hvergelmir's had been.

But she didn't believe it.

What she'd done had been worthwhile, she still believed that much. Laney didn't regret it, not really -- not even when she choked, some days, just trying to brush her teeth. Not when she lived off of murky nutrition drinks and had to scribble everything she wanted to say on a dry erase board with painstaking slowness. She'd had a good run of it, helped a few people. But these things were risky, and they had a limited shelf life, especially if you were too successful. The war had outlasted Hvergelmir's luck.

Laney traced a hand along the doorframe. How long would this place last? How long before the Negaverse found it, razed it to the ground or put it to the torch? The wood was old and dry -- how quickly would it catch flame? How many people would die, when the Negaverse came for Mintaka and her safe haven someday? What price would they exact for her brazen optimism?

It didn't matter, she told herself with a shake of her head. They weren't coming today. Today the refuge was safe, and the Negaverse's dark eye turned to greater matters somewhere else, back in the city. The sun was still in its heaven, all still right with the world. Laney was just here to pick up some books. Herger had brought back a few for the camp's children, recently, and they'd loved them. The woman he'd gotten them from had offered more -- some for Mintaka's refuge, and some for the Resistance's camp. That was all.

Laney was just being morbid and self-pitying. She had to let that go. She admired Mintaka and her cause -- how could she not?

Putting her own ghosts to rest for a little while, Laney adjusted the kerchief over the scarred lower half of her face and raised a hand to knock.

Fai had been hard at work on the house since moving in. After finding out she was pregnant, She had Arilee (Chariklo) help her move a small amount of her things to the house, taking a room on the third floor for herself and Magiore (Aurostibite, who had decided to leave Negaverse for her. It still made her giddy and terrified.) She had scrubbed floors, rebuilt small leaks in the ceiling, with Drakes help and Magiores very, VERY stern worry for her.

You'd think being a month and half pregnant was like 9 months with the way Magiore carried on. Every now and again, she would stop in her work, to pat her stomach where their baby grew inside her. She wasn't showing, but it didn't stop her from doing it. Small wonders of the body.

As of today though, she had finally dusted off the library shelves that Drake had installed for his classrooms, pulling books from the storage and leafing through them. Drake had mentioned needing more, and so Fai had reached out to the contacts of the city, asking for more to be brought here.

And as such, A woman, who Fai trusted almost instantly had books for both her refugee and for the resistance camp. She was very pleased to open her home as a meeting point for all three. She almost didn't hear the knock, until she set the rag down. It wasn't kids playing in the house, luckily as Quail's Eye had returned to whisk them off to the field of his. She was blessed that he helped her.

She went to the front door, opening it and smiling at the woman on the otherside. Laney, as known as Hvergelmir of Cosmos, was a woman that Fai respected very much. And was deeply saddened by her incident which led to the brutal scars. Both inside and out.

"Miss Laney." She opened the door wider, welcoming her in. "Sorry for the messes everywhere, we're in the midst of reconstruction. Would you like some tea?" She paused, as if she was talking to Ava for Laney to write an answer, smiling gently. "We can sit in the parlor until our other guest arrives? If that's okay?"

Sabina had dusted off her bicycle for this trip. It was rusty in some places and creaked an awful lot when she had first pulled it out, just like the door at her store. But it worked for what she was doing right now. Behind her was a cart of books covered in a blanket that was secured to with weights. It was a major pain in the butt for her to pull it behind her but she didn't have a car. Being a small bookstore owner did not make her enough money for that kind of investment. Plus cars drew way more notice. After cleaning the bike up and oiling it in the right places, that baby made barely any noise at all. Way easier for sneaking around with books going to the Order. However, doing all this just made her even more mad and her knuckles would tighten at times till they were white. If only I could pummel them into the ground. One of the hardest things about staying in the city was that she had to stay meek and obedient. What she really wanted to do was power up and beat them senseless like her brothers had taught her.

She finally made it to the estate and man was it an estate. Sabina let out a whistle of appreciation. Though she dearly loved her studio, it did get lonely. She did know that more than one person lived here. It made her miss her family more. She often thought of them but didn't want to risk contacting them. Her brothers would have put up a fight. For their sake, she hoped that they had known when to give up and bide their time. She kicked out the stand and went up to the door. Three neat knocks, then she was at the cart carrying the books to the door. The books were bound in stacks to make it easier to carry. There were five stacks in total and she lined them up next to the door.

Laney didn't take tea. She would've been delighted at the offer, once. Tea had always fascinated her, in the way of a naive American who'd never traveled abroad and who saw the whole thing as an event of great and fancy ceremony, whether it was the full Japanese service or the everyday British custom. Tea was fancy and respectable, a hobby for highbrow people with elegant tastes and fancy sensibilities. Tea was one of those Jane Austen things. Someone inviting her to sit down for tea -- she would've been giddy.

Now, she just took out her notepad and wrote, Thank you for having us here. It's such a help. No thank you for the tea, I'm fine. How are things here?

It took a few long minutes to write it all out, and she was relieved for Failyn's patience while she did. Laney followed her into the house, to a seat in the parlor -- then, no sooner had they taken chairs to wait than there came a knock on the door again.

God, it had been so long since that sound -- a knock on a door instead of a scritch at a tent flap -- had meant anything to her. The hairs on her arm immediately bristled out of learned caution. They were expecting the girl from the bookshop, but the person on the other side could've been anyone. A corrupted senshi. A general.

Laney got up and moved to a wall near the doorway where she'd be out of sight, just in case it was trouble, then motioned to Failyn that she could answer the door. It was Failyn's house, of course, and her door to answer whenever she liked -- but there was no reason not to agree to be cautious.

Fai waited just a moment before responding. "It's no problem for me! Half way point, and I'm glad to have you in my home Laney! You've done many wonderful things." She smiled at the woman again, "Oh just a crazy mess. So far, we've had some very kind residents join us. Negaverse captains and lituenants that are tired of the war, Senshi who need help and the Dark mirrors who have just been a blessing." She patted her heart. "You'd think such a thing wasn't possible, but me being a senshi, whose married AND pregnant with a negaverse captain, thankfully deserted them, though don't tell him that, I've tried to respect his loyalty very much and he was by far less..." Fai's eyes widened, "Anyway, rambling. And my best friend being a dark mirror princess...those things are technically taboo, they go against the whole war and yet here we are..." She gently touched the table. "Maintaining it for now. That's a good way of putting it. We are maintaining...surviving."

Her hand fluttered again up, nervously playing with her hair. She always felt odd about her strong dedication to her cause, but it was all she knew and all she wanted to know.

Her head turned away from Laney at the knock. moving automatically to the door. "Must be Sabina, Hold on hun..." And she did open the door, without much caution at all. She didn't give her address out to just anyone, so if someone was knocking and made it past the guard of Drake and his crew, then it must be her guest.

"Sabina!" Failyn smiled, "Here let me help you carry those in! Laney's here as well."

Sabina didn't have to wait long. Fai seemed enthusiastic upon seeing her and that alone brought a smile to her face. "No need Fai. You just take care of that baby you're brewing in there." One stack could be quite heavy and she did not want Fai to be falling over trying to carry them. Even though the woman seemed to work hard all the time, as they all did, she would not feel right making her carry the books. "See, easy breezy for me since I carry around books all the time." She lifted one stack with each arm, stretching her arms out till they were even with her shoulders. Being raised to slug it out with the boys had it's benefits and while she was ultra feminine in dress, her muscles told a different story.

Even though they weren't close, Sabina always felt some kind of mystical tie to every ally she met, especially those who fought for Order. So without hesitating, she bent down to speak softly to the baby. "You're gonna grow up to be strong and smart and free." She would beat every Negaverse to a pulp to ensure the last word.

Upon spotting Laney, Sabina smiled brightly. "Hi!" She put the first two down and hurried to get the others. Knowing Fai, the woman would stubbornly grab one anyways despite her protesting. All the women she had met, even the younger ones, were stubborn as hell. It made sense, only the stubborn would still be here fighting. After getting all the books in, she let out a huff of breath, then assumed her natural look of joy. That was all that could describe her expression, pure joy. They were alive, friends were here, and moments could never be cherished enough.

Being around two such upbeat, determinedly enthusiastic women was an unusual experience these days, for Laney. Living in the refugee camp, people tried to stay upbeat, but mostly the attitude was one of grim, gritty determination. Most of the optimism they had to offer was Herger's kind, steeped in fatalism -- or Eli's chipper attitude, manufactured for the good of children.

This was more pure, more genuine than that -- and while it was in some ways a breath of fresh air, it also made her feel miserably out of touch with what it was like to feel genuinely happy, or to be around people who did. She felt more normal in camp. Here, she felt like... well, she felt like a refugee who lived in a tent in the woods scavenging for food.

It made her miss her scavenging, refugee, tent-in-the-woods friends and their odd little society. It wasn't just her missing tongue that made Laney not fit in with people anymore.

Hi, Laney wrote, penning in a big smiley face alongside it. Thank you so much for sharing your books with us. How are things in the city? Are you safe? She held this up mainly for Sabina's inspection.

To Failyn she didn't attempt to write anything down -- but did offer a sheepish look of apology for having been so paranoid about her answering the door.

Fai laughed a little as Sabina bent down and talked to her flat stomach. She was guilty of doing the same thing, Magiore was guilty of the same thing. Everyone talked to it, even if the baby was nothing more then the size of a really really small bean. She waited till Sabina finished before adding, "With lots of aunts and uncles and friends if that comes to it right?" She moved regardless of the woman telling her not and at least carrying...one or two books. Just one or two because Sabina had moved too fast and had most of them.

With both of the women in her house now, Fai at least brought out a pot of tea for both her and Sabina, with a glass of water and straw for Laney. It was just not polite not to have some kind of drinks out for the two.

While she set up the tea for Sabina, she quickly scanned what Laney had wrote and then nodded along with her. "Yes, I agree with Laney, thank you so much for sharing these, It'll save a lot of the others from driving themselves insane with boredom." She gently touched Laneys arm, just a sign for the woman to forget even apologizing to her, she knew full well that everyone was suffering some sort of darkness, some sort of anxiety or paranoia. Laney didn't deserve hers but she had earned it regardless, and it only made Fai sad that she couldn't do anything to comfort her.

Instead she focused on the books, the small joy it would bring to her residents and to the Oasis camp where Laney lived. All thanks to Sabina.

Sabina didn't hesitate to give both women a big hug, careful not to crush them. She liked to pack on more muscle than the average woman and she was so tall that majority of the time, she was reminding herself to not hurt people in her overly enthusiastic way. "Yes, lots of aunts and uncles and cousins and friends."

After a quick scan of the words, she shook her head with a lopsided smile. "No need for thanks. Books were made for sharing. I'd be committing a crime by not sharing. Things in the city are...tense. I would recommend staying out of it if you aren't living in it. I'm safe. I keep up with any changes in laws and regulations, so I can adjust to seem like a normal citizen."

She had heard the rumors about Laney, all the things she had done to help as well as what had happened to her. It made her blood boil to see the results in person. There was no punishment too harsh for those that fought for Chaos. They had no mercy and were heartless creatures. The only sign of her anger was the clenching of her fists. Her face remained relaxed and smiling, like the reassuring beacon of a lighthouse. No matter how harsh the seas were, it still shined on.

"I'll have some of that tea if you're sharing. I worked up quite a thirst on the way here." She allowed herself to sit after a moment. They were safe here and Sabina let whatever tension was left in her to leave her.

While unsolicited physicality tended to make Laney jumpy, Sabina's imposing stature and muscular physique held no particular threat in her eyes. If anything, the tall woman reminded her of Herger, who was a trusted partner and a devoted shield. With all his strength, he had a huge, tender heart, and no desire to turn it to violence unless he had to. Sabina radiated the same warmth. A little stiff, but trying to force herself to relax, Laney allowed herself to be hugged.

She sat in one of the cute little chairs again when Failyn ushered them back to the receiving room, waiting politely while tea was brought for guests. The cup of water offered with the straw in it was a thoughtful, caring gesture, so Laney accepted it with gratitude, though she had no desire to go through the awkward, baby-bird head-tipping gestures it required to get things to the back of her throat to swallow them. Instead, she used the straw to periodically pretend to bring, suction lifting the water up high enough to wet her dry lips before letting the water go again. It was still nice to be able to indulge in such a luxury: wasting fresh water, sitting down to a nice chat and tea like a civilized person. They were foreign to her, now, the lives of these women, but they were soothing to visit.

Do either of you still have family in the city? she wrote down, holding it up for their inspection. Or anyone safe outside it?

Her own family hadn't stood by her -- that still stung. Some wounds didn't heal. But she wondered about them, sometimes, nevertheless: were they still in Destiny City? Were they doing okay? Did they ever miss their daughter, even a little?

"Fantastic, here you go Sabina." Fai pressed a cup gently over to the taller of the women, smiling here and there.

her hands ran over the covers and she closed her eyes. Luxuries came in many different things now, and books were hard to come by, and even harder to keep around here when she catered to so many people.

She could see the tension in Sabina almost immediately, but didn't comment or draw attention to it. Laney's scars didn't, in Fai's eyes, make her any less of the attractive woman she was. Her heart was kind and she still lived when others wouldn't, it took a strong respectable woman to keep going on.

"My family is safe in the city." Fai answered, blowing across her tea and shaking her head. "But they are...well..." To describe her parents...they had given up on her, and accepted their roles into society the Negaverse had built for them. It was her grandparents that had stood by her through it all.

"And you Laney? Are yours safe?"

Sabina did take notice of how stiff Laney was when she hugged her. She made a mental note to herself to not do that again. It was natural for her to hug people but some had a bubble that they did not want invaded. It was nothing personal, she knew that, so she tried her best to respect peoples boundaries.

She accepted the drink with a dip of her head. "Thank you Fai."

Her eyes scanned the words Laney wrote down. With a shake of her head she added, "I don't know how my family is doing but I know they are strong. My brothers will care for my mom. They were the ones that made me who I am. So I try not to worry about them." It did kind of suck that she couldn't contact them. The risk would be to great. She did not want the Negaverse to intercept any communication she might send.

She took a sip of the tea. The heat burning down her throat in a comforting way. For a moment, she let herself close her eyes and truly relax. It was so normal, something she tried to recreate in her bookstore. She opened her eyes slightly to look to Laney. Her body was not relaxed and the look on her face reflected that.
