Personality:
+ Level-headed || It would take a lot to get Kiernan riled outside of his military service. He believes in general that anger doesn't get anyone anywhere except in a fistfight and prefers to channel it into other tasks. The little things don't bother him and he is grateful for whatever he has for as long as it lasts. His patience only spans so far, though, and he is more likely to smile or wander away if directly confronted.
+ Loyal || Although they may not have the dirt, Kiernan's friends have an incredible ally. Even those from the past who wronged their way out of his good graces could turn to him for help. His friends and loved ones are the highest on his left, even above himself.
+/- No sense of self preservation || He just doesn't care. The man would wrestle a horse if it would benefit him in some way. While he doesn't make it a point to dive head-first into danger, it sometimes happens... often more commonly with Kiernan than to other men his age who have enough mind to turn away.
- Private walls || Even friends are not likely to learn much about the deeper parts of Kiernan; his past, his romantic life, his family. It isn't anything personal, but the man has spent a long time building up walls he isn't comfortable with people traversing, even those who have come closest. Noncommittal phrases and bare hints may be dropped, but pulling personal facts out of Kiernan is a lot like pulling teeth.
- Potentially violent || Sure, his superiors can scream in his face and he'll wait longer than he should to be paid, but those who do tip the scales toward anger are more likely to be met with a fist than a shouting match. As much as Kiernan doesn't like to throw his weight around, he knows it's there and gladly will if you threaten a friend or cross the invisible lines he has set.
History: Kiernan was born into a working-class family as the only child of a construction worker and a seamstress. Life was plenty grand up until he was twelve years of age, at which point his father was killed in a a fall at a job site. Kiernan worked the best he could at such a young age, doing odd jobs for people around the city, but sometimes was forced to turn to begging in order to supplement his mother's wages. In desperate times, though, a mother does what they must do, and Adelaide Callachan remarried a watchmaker with the means to support her small family. Kiernan had not gotten along so well with his step-father, but life was still fair. He was able to further his education until the age of seventeen when his parents decided that he should forge a career of his own. It was carpentry that young Kiernan chose, remembering his father's fondness for the work when he was a child. By then he had a younger sister to dote on and dutifully agreed to take up several years' apprenticeship beneath a local carpenter.
His interest in the military came years before the work was through. He saw the stationary guards on their work at the wall and sometimes caught the military police moving here and there. How he wanted to join their ranks, to do some good in the world! Unfortunately, the apprenticeship was binding and he would lose his family a great deal of money if he abandoned his post. His step-father had always been a bit cold to the boy, offended once by his lack of interest in watchmaking and unwillingness to act as if his father had never existed. Kiernan already felt like less than family, and so his step-father's shouts of disowning undutiful sons barely rang in his ears as he headed off, apprenticeship finished, to become a soldier.
