Keturah paced, tucking her little purple wings a little tighter to her sides. Seems he was running a little late, but she didn’t begrudge him that. He was a God, and fairly busy one at that – the Greater Herd needed a lot of protecting, sometimes even from their silly little follies. She was anxious, but it was because she was excited…she always loved spending time with her father. Quite honestly, she couldn’t get enough of it.

She remembered back to the first time she’d ever seen him. It was the day he’d come back from the Lands Below to discover a surprise that just about blew his mind. His excitement that had thrummed through all of the azrein had awoken her, and for a time, she merely watched him through her blanket, listening to the sounds of the bells on his antlers. Finally, when she could stand it no longer, she’d crawled over and touched his leg with her nose before throwing her head back enough to reveal one eye looking straight into his own. She’d cocked her head, showing no fear towards the strange male, and he’d bowed is own closer to her, making the bells in his antler chime gently. She’d been unable to resist the temptation, and stood for a moment on wobbly legs, stretching her nose out enough to make a few of them chime at her touch. Giggling, she’d fallen over, wiggling under her blanket at the touch of his nose as he inspected every inch of her making sure she was okay. Shortly, she gave a huge yawn before falling back into a contented slumber, his bells a comforting lullaby to the newborn filly.

One could say, and be perfectly right, that she was a Daddy’s Girl from that point on. Don’t get her wrong, she loved her mother dearly along with her siblings, but to be honest she felt stifled. She loved the glade, but she felt her mother would be happiest if the family never left and never saw another azrein ever. She knew her mother wanted them safe, but she couldn’t live that way. This little one, youngest of the bunch, was blessed with a love a life and those around her. She felt drawn to explore, to learn, to do her duty as she knew in her heart she was born to. What exactly the duty was, she wasn’t sure, but she had a long time yet to fully discover that for herself. Least that’s what her Daddy told her.

He also told her she had a heart of gold. What was gold? Was that why she couldn’t fly yet? These thoughts were interrupted by the faint sound of wing flaps and bells. Kicking her heels, she gave out a happy whinny before settling down towards the edge of the glade giving her Dad room to land, hooves dancing beneath her in anticipation. She wondered what he’d planned to do today…

xVᴀʀɪᴀɴ felt his heart swell as he tipped his wings, seeing the small figure eagerly awaiting him in the field by their glade below. He'd just come back from a long patrol -- it had taken he and Azreth twelve hours in total -- and a draining fight with one of the Six's Agents. His Chosen had patched him up as well as he could, but Varian healed quicker than most Azrein, so it didn't worry him too much. Despite the increasing number of Six Agents appearing around the Greater Herd, Varian had never been happier.

He and Avari were safe, and he had five beautiful, stunning children. Truly, the Good Spirits had blessed him. The Deity dipped a wing and spiraled downwards, circling the tiny filly from the air. With a dramatic backwing and a shake of his head, making the bells on his antlers chime merrily, the stallion landed several feet away from his daughter, who was prancing from hoof to hoof eagerly. And despite the bone-weariness coursing through him, the Deity smiled and trotted over to her, enveloping her tiny form completely in his wingspan in an embrace.

"My sweet Ketu, I've missed you." The stallion's voice was deep, rich, but there was a note of tension, of strain within it; no doubt from the exertions of his overly-long patrol. He offered Keturah a chagrined smiled, blue eyes lifting to the horizon, scanning for Avari or his other foals. "I see you've managed to give your mother and siblings the slip yet again, little one." He chuckled warmly, nudging her with his nose. "But what else should I have expected, hmm?"

The Deity glanced around, making sure Avari was nowhere to be seen before lowering his head and speaking to his daughter in a conspiratorial whisper. "What do you say to trying to learn to fly today, little one? No doubt, your mother would have a fit, but considering she's watching your siblings..." Varian trailed off, blue eyes sparkling.

Keturah bounded towards her father, nuzzling him as he embraced her, and for a moment, she felt a little ashamed for escaping her mother's watchful eye. She was bound to get another lecture about the dangers around the glade with Six about, but she was careful. And this time alone with him was special to her, and like hell was she going to let it go.

She rubbed her nose in his fluff, loving the smells he brought home, though there were a few that were different...strange. She wondered what they meant and lifted her nose away to really give her father a looking over. He was tired, it showed in his eyes, and his voice was different than usual. She didn't reply to his initial statements, instead her concerned look dropping away to a happy adoring one as he nudged her gently with his nose, teasing her, and she nosed him in return.

When he looked up, she nearly dropped her head, expecting her Mother to come out, but what he said next surprised her. "Fly? Mama said I'm too little to fly....said I'm not allowed until I'm old...er. Something about after I got kids of my own who are long grown....That's a awful long time to wait, Daddy."

xVᴀʀɪᴀɴ snorted, holding back laughter. Yeah, that sounded precisely like something his Lifemate would tell her daughter. The stallion grinned and shook his head, nudging one of Keturah's wings with his nose.

"I'm a God, little one. If I say you're old enough to fly, then fly you will. Don't forget you have my blood running through your veins. However, also remember your mother is with you; her words are wise, and you should take heed. She wants nothing more than for you and your siblings to be happy, safe, and healthy. But sometimes, the world gets in the way of that." The stallion's eyes darkened for a moment, his tail flicking in agitation. "Spirits forbid our glade is surrounded, and the only way out is the air. You and the other three kids with wings must know how to fly as soon as possible, little one."

Varian abhorred the thought of anyone getting close enough to do his children harm, but he knew the realities of war; nothing and no one was safe. So it was better to teach his foals how to fly sooner than later, even if they never had to take refuge in the skies until they were well into adulthood. "Flying is relatively easy, little one. It will come to you naturally. Your wings will know what to do on their own; the most difficult part is simply...letting go." It was hard to explain. But he had to try."We'll start with something simple."

Varian's voice took on the tone of command, and he stood up straighter, taller, and for a moment, his daughter saw the God and not the father."Pump your wings up and down until you feel as if they're about to fall from your shoulders. This will strengthen the muscles, and you must do this every day. Only cease flapping when you can no longer lift your wings, little one. The quicker you build up muscle and endurance, the sooner you shall take to the skies." This, of course, was only the first step, but Keturah would have to spend at least two weeks of doing this daily before her wings could hold her weight.

"One thing, before you begin, my love. You must swear to me, on your honor, that you will never, never attempt to fly without my presence, unless there's an emergency. Do you understand?"

Keturah sighed, hanging her head a little. She knew Daddy was right, that Mama wanted to keep them safe and healthy, and maybe happy, but she wasn’t all that happy here. In truth, she wanted to be with her Daddy, helping out on…well, whatever it was he was doing. Her heart longed to be there with every beat. She TRIED to be a good little filly, but there’s only so much one can do in the glade before it’d all been explored, and she got a lecture for venturing too far trying to find something new. She wasn’t trying to be trouble…but she was the littlest, and everyone (siblings included) seemed to feel she had to be protected. It was so frustrating!

Her Daddy, however, while protecting her, did it in such a way that it helped keep her mind occupied. He taught her some games with her mind, made her think about questions before he’d leave and ask for what she thought the answers were when he came back. This learning to fly bit was definitely going to keep her occupied over the next couple weeks (though she didn’t know that, she did suspect after this first lesson it’d be least a couple days…), especially while she pondered what he meant by ‘letting go’ since she wasn’t exactly holding on to anything she could see.

Lifting her head, she watched her father closely, her eyes growing wide in awe for a moment as she saw the God in him. In response, she stood as tall and proud as she could, listening closely to his instructions. “I promise, Daddy, I won’t,” she nodded enthusiastically. She never broke a promise made to her father.

She opened her wings wide and high, and began flapping as hard as she could. At first it was uncoordinated, she’d never actually tried this before, but she soon found a rhythm. However, it was hard work, and she soon tired, her wing beats getting slower and slower as she kept it up as long as she could. In all, it was maybe 10 minutes tops before she let her wings sag, panting hard. “This is going to take forever, Daddy….I wish…..Daddy, can I come with you when I fly? Can I patrol with you?”
